Former Professor and Retiree Receives Award

Walt Sweedo, coordinator of the college’s Disney co-op internship program, was inducted into the Lehigh Valley Soccer Hall of Fame at the annual awards banquet on Sunday, Jan. 29, in recognition for his work over the years to promote soccer, especially among girls.

Walt founded the soccer program in Schnecksville and was instrumental in the early development of girls’ soccer at Parkland High School. He coached girls’ soccer teams for the Schnecksville Playground Association from 1986 to 1994. He was active in the Lehigh Valley

Youth Soccer League and coached countless teams, all on a volunteer basis. Sweedo, an Emeritus Faculty, retired in 2014 after serving for 43 years as a full-time professor of business at LCCC.

Dean Receives Diversity AwardDr. Andra Basu, interim dean for the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at LCCC, has been

honored with the 2017 Insight Into Diversity Giving Back Award for Administrators.Dr. Basu chairs the college’s Diversity Committee, which was established last year to address one of

the college’s strategic and presidential priorities to increase diversity on campus, student demographics, staff hiring and general awareness. She has worked closely with faculty, students and staff across campus and ensures the committee’s work closely aligns with the priorities of the college president, Dr. Ann Bieber.

This award is the only national award that honors college and university administrators for their commitment to diversity. Dr. Thomas Meyer, LCCC vice president for Academic Services and Student Development, nominated Dr. Basu because of her leadership, dedication and demonstration of outstanding social responsibility throughout the LCCC campus and community. She will be recognized in the upcoming April 2017 “Leadership Support and Giving Back” issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine, a higher education diversity and inclusion magazine and website.

LCCC’s Dual Enrollment Program Featured

A film crew from PBS Channel 39 visited LCCC’s main campus in Schnecksville on Feb. 3 to film a video featuring LCCC’s dual enrollment program. The project, spearheaded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, is highlighting several dual enrollment programs across the state.

During filming, the crew interviewed Josiah Stuart, a senior at William Allen High School in Allentown. Also featured in the video are Dr. Ann Bieber; Stacy Long, a school counselor from William Allen High School; and Jennifer Aquila, director of High School Connections at LCCC.

The video will appear on the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s website later this spring.

Student Work to be Featured in ePortfolio Showcase

The Career Development Center will showcase student achievements and goals on March 3 at the annual ePortfolio Showcase and Awards at 1 p.m. in the CSC. Twenty-eight students from a variety of majors will share their ePortfolios in an exhibit room, followed by short

presentations from the top students based on scores from content judging.

The top three presenters will receive $200, $100 and $50 Visa gift cards.

LCCC Receives Donation from Neffs National Bank

LCCC was among area organizations that recently received monetary donations from the Neffs National Bank, Neffs, Pa. The donation was made in part through the bank’s participation in the state’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, which authorizes tax credit for contributions to Educational Improvement Organizations.

Kevin Schmidt, president/CEO of the bank, said that he hopes these contributions will stimulate other businesses to participate in the EITC program. The bank’s $25,000 contribution has been designated to the college’s Early Learning Center, which cares for children ages three to five.

LCCC Sponsors ‘Tamaqua Has Heart’ Project

As a sponsor of the Tamaqua Community Arts Center’s “Tamaqua Has Heart” project, the college has selected a final design, submitted by LCCC Assistant Professor of Nursing Karen Clark and her sister, Kimberlee, who teaches visual arts at Panther Valley Junior and Senior High Schools.

The design adheres to an educational theme that reflects the mission and vision of LCCC, the two women’s professions as educators and the legacy of their father, the late Dr. Robert A. Arner, who was a dentist in Summit Hill, Carbon County and the Panther Valley schools. Dr. Arner served on the Panther Valley School Board and the LCCC Board of Trustees.

The sisters brought together their love of education and appreciation of the arts in this collaborative design. They share this artistic display as champions of the mission of LCCC in educating our communities, and as celebrants of the importance of the arts in life and in all educational disciplines. They have also both shown that those born and raised in small Schuylkill and Carbon county towns can achieve greatness, professional success and community contributions; they speak to the value of “staying home.”

The fiberglass heart will be shipped to the Morgan Center for completion of the design. Students from LCCC and Panther Valley will do the actual painting.

CSC Lobby Named for Rothrock Patriarch

LCCC marked the naming of the Bruce L. Rothrock Sr. Community Services Center Lobby with a celebratory event Jan. 21. Guests and family members of the late Rothrock celebrated his memory at this special

event, and the proceeds will benefit the foundation’s new Bruce L. Rothrock Sr. Entrepreneurial Scholarship Fund, which was established by his family.

In 2008, the college’s Rothrock Library was named in memory of Debra Ann Rothrock-Chiaradia and made possible by the generous donation of Bruce Sr., Velia, Bruce Jr., David and Dean Rothrock. In addition, the Rothrock family will serve as honorary chairs of LCCC’s 2017 Foundation Golf Classic on Monday, Aug. 7, at Lehigh Country Club, Allentown.

Teacher Ed Students Raise Money for Charity

As part of the Community of Partners/International Community Build Project, LCCC’s TESA students raised money to donate to the Hearts for Haiti foundation throughout February. Every donation goes toward the orphan children of Haiti.

Students who participated in a bake sale Feb. 16 raised a total of $172.50 for the organization. Also, the ECE 225 Donley students created a donation box for collections of coins for Hearts for Haiti as part of their advocacy component of the class, Teacher as Lifelong Learner.

LCCC Allentown Starts Unity Wall

LCCC is starting a Unity Wall at the Donley Center in the first-floor waiting room. This wall will serve as an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to post positive messages of support and unity among the community in Downtown Allentown. The messages will be left up until the end of March. Instructions will be posted on the wall to deter any negative or offensive posts.

Basketball Teams Earn Spots in the Playoffs

Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams made the playoffs in February. The men’s win Feb. 16 over Montgomery County Community College brought their final record to 14-16 overall and 14-9 in Region XIX play. The 14 wins is a 12-game improvement from last

season, and the team was seeded No. 10 in the playoffs.In addition, player Erick Marfil was recognized as EPAC

Athlete of the Week for two games the week of Feb. 6, during which he posted two triple doubles. For the week he averaged 19.5 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists while shooting a 78 percent from the floor.

The women’s basketball team also traveled to Montgomery County Community College on Feb. 16 and earned a win over the Mustangs that clinched both a Region XIX Tournament berth and a share of the EPAC championship with Northampton Community College.

The women finished the season with a final record of 15-14 and 8-8 in Region XIX play. The team was seeded No. 6 in the playoffs. Read more about LCCC Athletics at gocougarsports.com.

Students Visit Allentown Art Museum

Instructor Anu Sachdev recently took her ECE 130 students (Integrating the Arts and Play in Early Childhood) to the Allentown Art Museum. They viewed a variety of art that would resonate with children, including sculptures by Harry Bertoia, an Italian artist who lives in East Greenville and is also a local furniture designer.

One of the students said: “I have been to art museums before and seen beautiful pictures but never knew the meaning behind a picture. This time, with a tour guide, it was nice to see the simplest things in paintings that can help convey the meaning behind the painting or the story.”

Students Celebrate Black History MonthThe Center for Career Pathways adult literacy students

celebrated Black History Month on Feb. 8 at LCCC Allentown.

Current GED and ESL students re-enacted a short play about Jackie Robinson, read passages and essays, presented student research, and showcased other talents and student work. Stephen Walker, entrepreneurship education specialist, spoke about contemporary issues in the lives of people of color and the power of education.
