Donley Site Relocation Receives Approval
LCCC has received the required two-thirds approval of the sponsoring school districts for the Resolution to Acquire and Convey Real Estate concerning the Donley
Center. The college can now move forward with plans to relocate the Donley Center to a remodeled facility at the Morning Call building on North Sixth Street in downtown Allentown.
LCCC Prepares for Middle States Accreditation Visit LCCC recently submitted its Self-Study, Document Roadmap and all supporting
documentation to the Middle States Accreditation review team. At this point, the college is working to raise awareness among LCCC employees, to ensure they are prepared to answer questions during the accreditation team’s visit to campus Feb. 25 through 28.
The college has implemented daily Accreditation Fact popups on the portal, announcements in the College Voice, a fact sheet, and in early February, there will be an online course that all employees need to complete. The final meeting for participants and faculty is set for Feb. 23.
College employees have been asked to review the Self-Study and familiarize themselves with the seven standards, as well as the college’s initiatives. During the evaluation team’s visit Feb. 25-28, the college community can expect to see them on campus and a lot of meetings taking place. The team will visit the Morgan and Donley centers, and possibly the airport site and Jim Thorpe. Primarily, they will be at the main campus in Schnecksville.
Gov. Tom Wolf Visits LCCCLCCC was proud to host Gov. Tom Wolf on Jan. 9 at its main campus in Schnecksville.
Wolf joined LCCC officials, students, instructors and company leaders in a tour of the college’s commercial truck driver training facility and mobile manufacturing lab.
The tour was followed by a roundtable discussion that included LCCC students and local manufacturing and trucking companies. During the roundtable, former students spoke highly of the program and the ability it gave them to enter a growing field.
“I’m grateful for everything they taught me,” former CDL student Deverri Santiago said of LCCC’s instructors. “People think anyone can be a driver, but this taught me responsibility and confidence when driving.
That is a big piece of equipment with a lot of weight behind it, and the safety part is what I learned here.”Before leaving campus, Wolf briefly greeted members of the LCCC faculty during their Welcome Back session. Read
more about the visit at www.lccc.edu/about-lccc/news.
Winter Edition of Aspire Magazine Available Online
In the winter edition of Aspire Magazine, you can read more about Jusline Sayegh, a Syrian immigrant who credits LCCC’s ESL program with helping her get a head start; the food share program that is helping LCCC combat food insecurity; a $1 million grant that will help LCCC encourage its STEM students; and a generous donation from the family of Byron Shoemaker, which will allow LCCC to provide more scholarships to students.
LCCC Receives $1 Million Grant for STEM Students LCCC was recently awarded a five-year, $1 million grant by the National Science Foundation under the S-STEM
program, which is designed to produce skilled graduates prepared to enter the STEM workforce. The Start SMART project, which stands for Self-Motivated, Academic, Reflective and Talented, will provide scholarships
for 90 to 100 academically talented, low-income students to increase their retention, degree completion and transfers to four-year programs.
Students majoring in science, engineering, mathematics, computing, drafting, industrial automation, electronics technology, electrical technology, mechanical technology and nanofabrication technology will participate as a cohort in structured activities to motivate them to persist in their STEM programs. These activities will include one-on-one mentoring with STEM faculty, orientation, monthly meetings featuring integrated learning labs, mathematics support, student-facilitated study groups, S-STEM buddies, presentations by professionals, workshops, field trips, STEM Club and job/transfer fairs.
The principal investigator for the grant is Assistant Professor Dr. Deepika Khilnaney. Other faculty members assisting with the project are Assistant Professors Richard Snyder and Maureen Maikner.
LCCC Offers Additional Drone Classes LCCC is offering two spring semester, two-credit courses in small Unmanned Aircraft Systems, commonly referred to
as drones. With the commercial applications of drones increasingly expanding into businesses such as construction, law enforcement, agriculture, photography and videography, and engineering, drone flying skills can be of value to many employers.
The instructor is John Fries, pilot, commercial drone operator and co-founder of Lehigh Valley Drones. Students not interested in receiving a grade can take the course as an audit. In addition to the classroom instruction, five Saturday sessions for flying will be scheduled on main campus according to weather and student schedules. The following classes, daytime or evening, will be taught:
9 to 10:30 a.m., Fridays, Feb. 9 to May 4; 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursdays, Feb. 15 to May 3
Women’s Basketball Hosts Community Dinner Coach Don Delich and LCCC’s women’s basketball team recently hosted a community meal at the Trinity Lutheran
Church in Palmerton. The food was prepared and served by the coaching staff and players. More than 150 free meals were served between noon and 4 p.m. on Jan. 13. The meals were free but donations were being accepted, and over $700 was raised, with proceeds to be donated to the American Cancer Society.
“It was a great experience for our team, as well as a team bonding experience,” Delich said. “Watching the joy on their faces as well as the people we served was truly rewarding.”
‘I Earned 15’ Note Card Campaign
Dozens of employees wrote and signed cards to nearly 600 students who completed 15 credits in fall 2017. The cards are part of the “I earned 15 credits” campaign. Some students reach this milestone in one semester, but for many students, this milestone comes after several semesters.
Presentation on Workforce Training Director of Workforce Training Tom Bux presented to members
of the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association for Talent Development on Jan. 19, on the topic of developing talent pipelines. Members of the ATD group included training managers and Human Resources directors from various local businesses.
Bux presented from his co-authored journal from October’s TD at Work, written for the national board of the Association for Talent Development.
Mobile Lab First Graduating Class LCCC recently graduated its first class that used the new mobile
manufacturing mobile unit. The class, Industrial Automation Technician, began in August and finished
in early December. The Industrial Automation Technician Certificate program prepares workers for high-demand jobs in advanced manufacturing. Topics included AC/DC Theory, Control Logic, Motor Control, Pneumatics, Mechanical Drive Systems and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
The program was a joint effort between the Manufacturers Resource Center in Allentown and LCCC. The program targeted manufacturing companies with needs for advanced manufacturing technology skill building. The mobile unit was hosted by ATAS Inc., Allentown, and four local companies sent employees through the lab, taking online theory and simulation and completing hands-on skill-building exercises in the mobile unit four hours every week.
TV/Film Students’ Work Highlights Conservation DistrictLCCC recently worked with the Lehigh County Conservation District when Associate Professor and Media
Communications Coordinator Wendy Barron’s fall 2017 Video Production class developed educational videos featuring local conservation topics.
Two of the TV/Film students also attended a recent county commissioners’ meeting to showcase their class project and videos.
LCCC Tamaqua Holiday Drive The third annual Morgan Center Angel Tree and Canned Good Sled Drive was
spearheaded by Chuck Rodgers and Rosie Stianche. This year, Rodgers made the sleigh that held the canned goods, and 28 children received Christmas gifts that were purchased by the staff and faculty at LCCC's Morgan Center.
