English in the workplace

What is the training about?The course focuses on raising the standards of an employee’s communication skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Effective communication with colleagues, managers as well as customers and suppliers are the cornerstone of any successful organisation. The course seeks to raise these communication skills which can improve quality, customer service and the employee’s ability to work independently and effectively.

Who should attend?There are no formal requirements – Employees should want to improve their English skills to undertake their work more effectively and potentially progress to further training or increased responsibilities within the workplace. They should have a willingness to attend, be able to work independently and achieve the qualification within the agreed timescales.

Training outcomesThe following units: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

To make the course relevant, it is always beneficial to incorporate work related forms and information. Skills learnt will include presentation/discussion skills, writing in different formats, writing for new technology, reading to recognise different purpose of text and applying English in everyday situations at work.

To achieve the full Functional Skills qualification, a pass in all three units is required.

DurationThe duration of the training depends on the employee skill level and the group size.

AssessmentAssessment is through exams.

ProgressionAfter the training the employee should be able to progress onto the next level of English and undertake day to day work tasks in a more confident manner. They should be able to demonstrate they can use both spoken and written skills competently and be able to apply them effectively within the workplace. Having secure communication skills ensures the employee can gain the most from further internal or vocational training such as apprenticeships.

Maths in the workplace

What is the training about?The course focuses on raising the standards of an employee’s basic everyday maths skills. Being secure in maths can assist an employee to work confidently and effectively when interpreting and calculating mathematical information within the everyday challenges of the workplace. The course seeks to raise the basic maths skills which can reduce the incidence of errors and wastage through miscalculations within the workplace

Who should attend?No formal requirements – Employees should want to improve their maths skills to undertake their work more effectively and potentially progress to further training or increased responsibilities within the workplace. They should have a willingness to attend, be able to work independently and achieve the qualification within the agreed timescales.

Training outcomesThe focus of the course is on the basic processes of mathematics and developing the employee’s ability to recognise how every day work situations can be represented using maths:

Developing mathematical tools and operations, being able to apply these procedures appropriately to a work situation or problem, being able to interpret results and consider the accuracy and conclusions to be drawn from this information.

DurationThe duration of the training depends on the employee skill level and the group size.

AssessmentAssessment is through exams.

ProgressionAfter completion of the course the employee should be able to progress onto the next level of maths or a vocational course such as an apprenticeship. In addition the employee should be more confident when calculating/interpreting work related mathematical tasks resulting in improved quality or reduced errors/wastage.

Over the past two years, Leicester College has undertaken a programme of delivery with Europcar to raise the standard of written and spoken English within the Company. Leicester College has successfully achieved a 100% pass rate for 37 employees in 12/13 with 21 learners in 13/14 ready to achieve this.
