What Do Roman Coins & IT Have In Common?

Page 3: Leicester network rdyas

• Business use of ICT produces 2% of the world’s CO2 emissions and that is the same as the airline industry. 1

• National Framework for Sustainable Schools is part of the OFSTED Inspection.

• 2008 study found that English schools estates emits 8.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. 2

• Not forgetting out moral duty as educators of young people. We should always lead by example.

Technical Culture

Page 6: Leicester network rdyas

Culture Change• The biggest challenges are cultural not technical.• Get SLT Backing.• Think non ICT related changes, i.e. use of paper. Can some print outs be moved

to a Learning Platform.• Recycling Paper and Toners.• Get the pupils thinking about it.• Compare your results with another school. • Start small and then look at the bigger challenges. • Make it everybody’s responsibility

Culture Change

1. Work out where you are2. Work out small gains, such as recycling

3. Work out larger gains, such as environmentally aware purchasing4. Work out your improvements

5. Repeat

Environment Friendly Hardware• Raw material• Production• Packaging• Distribution• Cost• Maintenance• Energy Efficiency

• Performance • Safety• Disposal

Page 10: Leicester network rdyas

Environment Friendly Hardware• More suppliers are offering environmentally

friendly equipment. RM for example for a number of years have had their EcoQuite Range. They recently released a 60 WATT computer.

• Other manufactures such as DELL, HP and Acer also have environmentally friendly computers.

Page 11: Leicester network rdyas

Environment Friendly Hardware• Buy equipment that is fit for the purpose but

is green. • This does not mean buying at premium.• In the USA there is a system called EPP

(Environmentally Preferable Purchasing).• People have given it a new name

Environment, Price & Performance.

DisposalBe aware of the WEEE regulations but layman's guide is: -• If brought before 13th August 2005 and not being replaced with

piece of like-for-like equipment then you are responsible for disposal.

• If brought before 13th August 2005 and is being replaced with piece of like-for-like equipment then new supplier is responsible.

• If brought after 13th August 2005 then original supplier is responsible.

• Check your contracts as suppliers might offer cheap equipment if you sign WEEE disposal to yourself.
