T H I S   ‘ N ’   T H A T   A N N O U N C E M E N T S CAMARILLO SPRINGS CERT Village residents are invited to join Jan Cheveres and Robbie Dornick of Camarillo Springs CERT when they share their experiences and actions during the recent Springs Fire. This informational event will be held in the MPR on Sept. 11 (9/11) at 7:00 PM in the MPR. TECH RESOURCE CENTER The LV Computer Club has changed its status from a club to a sub-committee of Ed and Rec. The Club name has changed its name to Tech Resource Center (TRC). The computer room will remain open for residents with keys. Classes and mentoring will continue to be a part of the new group. More info will follow as the group is reorganized. If you are interested in being a mentor, contact Kathy Wirtz, 384-8508. SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES Two new sign language classes will be offered in Sept. after Labor Day. Glenn Whitlock who taught a beginner’s class last spring will once again be the instructor for these classes. A new beginner’s class will begin starting Sept. 9 at 5:00 PM in the MPR. The class will focus on the basics of sign language through group activities including games, conversation and direct instruction. Students will have the opportunity to learn the basics of fingerspelling, build approximately 200 signs including some emergency signs, and learn about the origins of sign language in America. An Intermediate Class will be offered to those with a mastery of the spring class or those with a functional level of basic sign language. Students will expand their sign language vocabulary through direct instruction, various activities including songs, The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and situational dialogue. This class will begin Sept. 9 in the Lanai Room at 5:00 PM on Mondays. Students will be given handouts during each class and have access to the game materials between sessions. Viva the Village! features a variety show with John Baillie interviewing special guests, going out and about in the community with Villagers on the Town and Debra Guill as the Calendar Diva updating you with happenings here in the Village. E N T E R T A I N M E N T GROOVING EASY BAND The band will be playing in the AR on Tues., Aug. 13 from 7:00-9:00 PM. This event is free and coffee and cookies are available at intermission. This band plays some great music, so come and enjoy. Contact: Roy Badger, 388-9335. MUSIC APPRECIATION We meet every first and third Fri. at 10:00 AM in the MPR. LV MUSICIANS CLUB Our next big event is on Sun., Aug. 11 from 2:00-4:30 PM in the AR. The great Night Blooming Jazzmen will be playing some fantastic Dixieland Jazz to entertain us. Tickets are $7. Tickets can be obtained from Roz Feldman, 383-6566 or Roy Badger, 388-9335. On Sun., Sept. 29 we are having a variety show with the Grooving Easy Band and The Broadway Bound Vocal Group. This group has performed at the Thousand Arts Performing Center and the Alliance For the Arts and many other venues. PLAYERS GUILD Players Guild will be holding their monthly meeting Thurs., Aug. 15 at 7:30 PM in the AR. After a short meeting we will have a workshop, "The Music of Irving Berlin," which was scheduled to be presented by Marty Simons, but is now being produced & directed by Stan Reshes in Marty's memory. The evening will be a wonderful musical evening of popular Irving Berlin songs sung by our own residential stars. As usual, delicious refreshments will follow. C L U B S AMATEUR RADIO CLUB Our monthly meeting is on the first Wed. at 2:00 PM in the Garden Room. We are FCC licensed amateur radio operators. In an emergency, we operate the LV Emergency Communications Center, one of a very few such non-governmental Emergency Operation Centers that are part of the county Auxiliary Communication Services (ACS). We link with county hospitals, police, fire, Red Cross, city and county emergency communication centers. The Ventura County ACS amateur radio operators operate the backup emergency county communication centers. Our presence in CERT means we will have radio operators in the field with the CERT teams. Anyone with a current Amateur Radio Operator’s License or who is interested in obtaining one, contact Ted Lansing, 484-3884 or attend our monthly meeting.

BILLIARD CLUB We will not be holding a Billiard Club meeting in Aug. Come join the fun at our Social Night every Thurs. evening; play a game of pool, sign up around 6:15 PM for the new mini-competition or join the group for a fun game of “LCR.” Contact: Jeanne White, 207-9869 or John Wirtz, 384-8508. BOOSTERS CLUB The Booster Club is the only organization in the Village whose sole purpose it to enhance the community with fun and fellowship by raising funds for projects outside the LVA budget. Plans for our next events include a Day at the Races and perhaps a game show pitting clubs and Villages against each other. We cannot continue to be successful without help from the community. BOWLING CLUB The LV Bowling League will start the new season on Sept 13. The regular sign-up period has ended, but we are always looking for substitutes and, if enough people sign up between now and Sept 10, we will add another team. Currently, 15 teams are participating. CAMERA CLUB The Camera Club meets on the first Wed. of the month for a competition meeting where members submit digital images and a professional judge gives invaluable critique. The third Wed. of the month is a workshop or speaker where we learn new software or share our photographic skills. There is NO workshop in Aug. Our next field trip will be a docent-lead tour of the Santa Barbara County Courthouse on Mon., Aug. 19. Be sure to bring your camera. The club won many ribbons at the Ventura County Fair. Contact: Judy Spector, 384-9039. CERAMICS CLUB There is an interest list going for the next couple of beginning hand-building classes. CERAMIC MOLD DECORATORS CLUB We meet Wednesdays at 11:00 AM in the Ceramics Room to work on individual projects, visit, and help each other where needed. You can pour your own pieces using the many molds we have or buy items elsewhere and bring them to work on. Stop by and see if this is something you'd be interested in. Contact: Lucile Terry, 484-2589. CHESS CLUB The LV Chess Club meets Wed. and Fri. from 10:00 AM-Noon in the Annex. Lessons are available for beginners and for those who need their long-ago skills refreshed. The atmosphere is casual, and coffee and cookies are served to that purpose. MAVERICKS The Mavericks will be dark on the fourth Fri. of Aug. Instead, we are having a “Movie Night In The Park” on Thurs., Aug. 22 at 7:30 PM in the Picnic Area by the Annex. Bring your chair, a flashlight, pick up a couple of goodies at the concession stand (popcorn, candy and drinks will be available for a donation or BYOB) and watch a free movie (suggested donation for non-members is $2). The movie we will be showing is the hilarious comedy, “The Birdcage,” starring Robin Williams, Gene Hackman, and Nathan Lane. Hope you will all come and enjoy this night under the stars like the good old days!  Please join us on Fri., Sept. 27 at 6:00 PM for a “Picnic In The AR” with hamburgers and hot dogs with all the fixings. We had such great participation and fun in July at “Game Night”, we will be setting up some games for everyone to enjoy after the dinner. Look for all the details in the September “ILV” issue. OUR NEW SEASON IS NOW UNDERWAY. JOIN US FOR GOLF & A NICE WALK ON THE GRASS. NEW YORK CLUB The New York Club meets on the first Thurs. of each month in the AR at 7:30 PM. We will be creating gifts and decorations for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah and Christmas. Beginners can do many projects and assistance is always available from your team teachers. Do not bring pets to this meeting. There will be a donation box for the Ventura County Sheriff's Canine Foundation Fund that is used for expenses including veterinary care. RACQUET CLUB The annual Racquet Club picnic is scheduled for Sat., Aug. 17, in the picnic area at 12:30 PM for members and guests. This will be a catered luncheon. Check the court bulletin board for more details. Contact: Diane, 419-4325.

PADDLE TENNIS A new Round Robin group is now playing every Tues. at 5:30 PM. This session is for advanced beginner thru intermediate level players. Anyone wishing to improve their playing skills is invited; you do not have to be a Racquet Club member to join this fun-loving group. This game time is for people who know how to play, not for those needing to learn the rules of the game. Contact: Trish, 991-6374. PICKLEBALL Pickleball continues each Mon. and Wed., starting at 9:00 AM at the courts; free lessons given each Mon. and Wed; you are invited to earn the fastest growing senior sport in the country. TABLE TENNIS/PING-PONG Lessons for beginners are given every Tues. at 2:30 PM in the Paddle Palace in the Annex. At 3:30 PM open play starts for all skill levels. Contact: John Peterson, 388-1230.

RV CLUB Attention Members and Invited Guests---The Sept. meeting has been changed to Mon., Sept. 16, at 6:30 PM in the AR for a meet and greet to be followed by our Sept. meeting. SHUFFLEBOARD Everyone is doing very well and enjoying shuffleboard; there is a lot of enthusiasm and interest. We play shuffleboard every Wed. at 9:30 AM. VETERANS CLUB On Thurs., Aug. 22 in the MPR at 7:30 PM we will be showing club member Chris Hansen's recording for the Veteran's History Project and his WWII service. There will be coffee and snacks after the meeting. We will also be making reservations for the Oct. pizza dinner at this meeting. Cost: $8 per plate for: 2 slices of pizza, salad, soda and dessert. Wii BOWLING CLUB Leisure Village Wii Bowling is fun and easy. If you can hold a remote, and focus on a large TV screen, you can participate in Wii Bowling. Ninety-minute Wii Bowling Club pre-scheduled sessions are on Tues., Wed. and Thurs. Dues are only $4 until the end of the year. WOMEN’S CLUB The Women's Club Tues. workshop is located in the MPR from 9:00-11:00 AM every week. The Club’s purpose is to bring together residents to present stories or poems on any subject, real or fictitious, including thought provoking topics. Many stories relate to events in member's lives. The Club provides a fruitful avenue to document meaningful aspects of childhood and adult memories, or family anecdotes that have never been shared with others or families. Microphones provided. The only limitations are on stories of a specific religion, or partisan political issues. Members read stories or poems while other members come to listen, enjoy and learn. Members do not critique stories but may comment. Suggested topics for presentation at each meeting are furnished. Suggested topics for Aug. 12 is "My Favorite Newspaper/Magazine, for Aug. 19 is “Would I Want To Go To Mars" and for Aug. 26 is "Memories Of My Grandparents.” Contact: Harvey S. D A N C E BEGINNER LINE DANCE CLASS, TUES. Class meets every Tues. from 2:30-4:00 PM in the AR. Extra help is available 2:30-3:00 PM. Regular class is 3:00-4:00 PM. FOREVER-YOUNG DANCE CLUB The Forever Young Dance Club is hosting dances on the third Fri. of the month in the AR from 7:00-10:00 PM. Music will be by live bands playing 50’s, 60’s and 70’s type music. The tickets are $7 at the door or purchased from club members. E X E R C I S E EXERCISE GROUP The exercise group meets in the Pavilion south of the swimming pool each weekday morning at 8:30 AM for 30 minutes of simple stretching designed to keep you mobile and well-balanced. MUSIC AND MOTION AEROBICS CLASS If you want to get fit and lose weight while having fun, try the Music and Motion aerobics class. It features a variety of music, low-impact aerobic exercise tailored to your needs, bone-building exercises, strength training and balance-improvement activities. The certified instructor, Renee, makes it fun. She has 19 years of experience and is highly qualified. The class meets on Mon., Wed. and Fri. (except for the first Mon. of each month) in the AR from 9:00-10:00 AM. The first class is free; the cost per class is $5.  WATER AEROBICS Try free low-Impact exercise in the pool. Sessions are every Mon., Wed. and Fri. from 11:00-11:45 AM. During the session, the pool is closed to swimmers. Exercising in the pool is easy and healthy. Night-time Water Aerobics are back every Tues. and Thurs. evenings at 6:00 PM, during which time the pool will remain open to swimmers. If you haven’t tried it yet, come join us. YOGA There are two Yoga classes, one on Tues. and one on Thurs. Both classes meet in the AR. Sign in starts at 9:30 AM and the Yoga class begins at 10:00 AM and ends at 11:15 AM. The cost for each class is $5. You should bring Yoga mat and a strap. C R A F T S LAPIDARY Would you like to learn how to make jewelry from natural rock, one of earth's beauties? Would you like to grind and polish various shapes from nature's beautiful stones and minerals? The Lapidary Room and equipment is available to all Village residents once they become qualified. SINGLE ACTIVE SENIORS The first ever Club Faire last month was a complete success. Many of our LV singles attended the event and signed our attendance sheet. We get a private room, therefore, the reservation is an absolute must! Hope to see you on Aug. 13. WOODSHOP Our volunteer craftsmen accept items for repair on Tues. and Wed. from 10:00 AM-Noon at the Woodshop window in the Rec Center. There is no guarantee that all damaged items can be fixed, only that we will try to restore them to the best of our ability. AARP DRIVER SAFETY CLASS The next Initial (two-day) Class is for people who have never completed the Initial (two-day) Class and who want to receive the training and automobile insurance discounts for their initial three-year period.
