Eight area artists were selected as winners of the 12th annual Latino Art Bravisimo show. This year’s winners are Marino Payan, Carlos Colorado, Debbie Froelich, Bernadette Torres, Everado Acosta, Hector Garcia, Eugenia Ortiz and Maria Raquel Morales.

For the fourth year, the art is scheduled to be displayed at the Mexican Consulate following the Lenexa show. Latino Art Bravisimo is organized by the City of Lenexa and the Lenexa Arts Council as a way to help expand understanding of the Latino culture, celebrate diversity and appreciate art. Thank you to our sponsors Henderson Engineering, McCownGordon Construction and Sprint.

ContentsNew playgrounds, disc golfSeveral of Lenexa’s playgrounds have received, or are scheduled to receive, a face lift this year thanks to funding from the 3/8-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2008. With this funding, nine playgrounds were updated in 2011 and 2013, and six playgrounds are scheduled to be replaced this year, including Kickapoo West and East, Na Nex Se, Mullen, Electric (2-5 year old playground), and Scouting. Also a new destination playground, which will feature a zip line, multi-level play tower, interactive elements, merry-go-round, slides, swings and a shade structure, is being built at Little Mill Creek Park at 79th and Cottonwood streets.

Be sure to check out the new disc golf course that was installed at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park this spring. Located behind the Indian Trails Aquatic Center and south of the skate park, the new nine-hole course is perfect for families looking for a fun outing or even experienced disc golf players who want to practice their approach and putting skills. Participants must supply their own discs.

2014 pool schedule

2015 seasonal positions at Lenexa pools

The adapted schedule for Indian Trails Aquatic Center starts Aug. 11. The pool will be open weekdays 4-7 p.m. and weekends noon-7 p.m. Hours on Sept. 1 (last day of the season) are noon-6 p.m.

Are you interested in a summer job? Lenexa Parks and Recreation hires pool managers, lifeguards, front desk and concession staff for its three outdoor swimming pools. Applications for next year’s pool season will be available on the city’s website in November 2014. All lifeguards are required to be American Red Cross Lifeguard certified. Training classes are available starting in March 2015, with free lifeguard training for eligible applicants seeking employment with the City of Lenexa. For more information, contact Lauren Ozburn, recreation supervisor-aquatics, at [email protected].

NEW Family Game NightMake plans to attend Family Game Night, 7-9 p.m., on Friday, Nov. 7 at the Lenexa Community Center. Families will compete in game-show themed games such as what are seen on TV. Bring your enthusiasm because there will be laughter, cheering, teamwork and lots of fun for all. Snacks and prizes will be available. Cost is $20 for a family of 4 and $2 for each additional family member. Register online.

Join us for a new event - Theatre Hike - where you will enjoy a leisurely paced hike at Black Hoof Park and two live-theater plays using the beautiful park as the backdrop.

“A Walk with Mark Twain” which takes place on Saturday, Oct. 4, will feature two one-act plays by Mark Twain: “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Caleveras County” at 1 p.m. and “Diaries of Adam and Eve” at 3 p.m.

Guests are encouraged to bring their own blankets, lawn chairs and snacks. Upon arriving at Black Hoof Park, they will be greeted by Mark Twain, who will lead the hike. Once they arrive at the first outdoor set, they will get comfortable and watch the first scene of the play. Then, they will pack up, enjoy another short hike and watch another scene of the play, and so on. In all, guests and actors will hike about two miles if they stay for both plays. Both plays are appropriate for all audiences, however, the first play is most enjoyed by

children and the second play is generally more appealing to adults and older kids.

Cost is $5 per person (children 3 and under are free). Maximum cost per household is $15. The event is hosted by the Lenexa Arts Council and Parks and Recreation. Find more details and register online at www.lenexa.com/art.
