Summer days out .....

A day out at Harestanes Country Park ..... We have had several trips out last month, everywhere from the seaside, garden centres,

Kelso, Dunbar and Hawick. But one of the trips we enjoyed the most was our trip to Harestanes Countryside Visitors Centre near Jedburgh. We had a lovely walk along the nature trail, and the bug hotel before stopping of at the cafe for a well earned cup of tea and a piece of cake, which was delicious, I would recommend the home baked lavender shortbread! After tea we had a wonder around the craft shops and museum before heading home for lunch. I have a feeling we will be back at Harestanes very soon. Well someone has to do quality control on the shortbread! !! Did you work out from our front page teaser where Alan and Lesley are? It's a look back at rural life during World War 2 exhibition at Harestanes, and they are in the typical accommodation for a Land Girl working on the border farms.

Annie celebrated her birthday recently with family and staff - here she blows out her birthday cake

It was lovely to finally try the first strawberrys of the season from our Lennel garden which Alan will confirm were delicious!

The problem now is having to wait until the rest have ripened, which is a hard thing to do when you have our chef’s Leslie's scones and cream waiting. Hopefully, once the rain stops we will get back into the garden and pick the rest before the birds think that they are all for them!

We are also planning to plant some fruit trees in the garden so that we can have our own apples, pears and plums. Nothing tastes better than picking your own fruit from your own garden.

Pictured are Alan and Annie who enjoyed the first strawberries out-side in the sunshine .....remember the sun-shine and warmth!!

Our first strawberries!

Everyone at Lennel would like to say a big welcome to Mark, our new maintenance man, who has been with us for a few weeks now.

I'm sure you will agree if you have been to Lennel recently that he has already made a big difference. The front grounds look so much better as well as inside the building ..... and he has the company car purring!

Meet our new handyman Mark .....

As the weather turned and the sun came out we thought we would take the opportunity to have a nice day out and visit Kelso Abbey.

It is amazing to stand in a building with so much history. We found out that it was founded in the 12th century by a community of Tironensian monks first brought to Scotland in the reign of Alexander I from France.

We wandered around the old ruins and Jim particularly enjoyed looking at the old cloisters and nave, we would have liked to have spend more time exploring but unfortunately the heavens opened so we all had to make a dash into the nearest shop.

Pictured is Jim beside the interesting and very well illustrated information board.

Helping with the War Effort in 1915

Cecile Victor was 6 years old when she wrote the letter opposite to Lady Clementine Waring.

Lady Clementine was the wife of Major Walter Waring, Liberal MP for Banff, who fought in the war. She converted their home, Lennel House, into a convalescent home for officers and did a great deal to support the needs of the soldiers.

It gives an insight into how people at home contributed to the war effort.
