FRIDAY 15 DECEMBER 2017 | TERM 4 | WEEK 10

Principal’s Message Congratulations everyone! We made it through another quality year of learning with quite a lot of fun as well at Lennox Head Public School. Well done everyone! I am including a section of my speech from the Presentation assembly on Tuesday as recognition of the many great things that occurred at our school this year. I can honestly say I am very proud to presently lead such a fantastic group of students and staff. We are incredibly lucky to live in such a great close knit community which actively supports and looks out for each other. This ultimately helps to ensure the success of our students across their varied interest areas. Some notable highlights this year have included a considerable number of students who have represented our school at state level in sporting events, and academic fields. Our school band and choirs have continued to go from strength to strength and have continued to represent our school with pride. Well done to Kate Somerville and Fiona Clarke to their dedication to this. I would like to acknowledge the children who performed at the opera house this year, well done. Our school concert last term was a testament to the wonderful talents of both students and staff. It was highly received by all who were able to see it and you should all be immensely proud of your efforts. A special mention once again to Kate Somerville for her tireless efforts in ensuring that this was fantastic. We continue to achieve excellent results in the Kindergarten L3 program with a high percentage of children achieving well beyond the state reading bench marks for Kindergarten children. Other results related to literacy and numeracy in the early years are incredibly positive, with solid growth in many areas. Our NAPLAN results indicate that quality teaching is occurring in all stages with considerable growth in many areas. Well done to both students and teachers. I would like to thank everyone for their involvement and commitment in 2017, our hard working P and C, the many parent volunteers and especially the dedicated hard working teachers who care about their school and children, who put in much of their personal time and effort because they care. They do this without accolades or applause, as it is part of their job for which largely goes unrecognised, so I would personally like to say thank you to you all, as I get the enjoyment of visiting classrooms and seeing what a difference you make every day. I would like to acknowledge the school leadership team of Mrs Armstrong, Mrs Dyer, Mrs McIntyre and Mrs Atkins for their dedication to leading the school. I would also like to pass on our sincerest wishes to Mrs McIntrye who is leaving us to join the leadership team at Bogangar public school, they are certainly picking up an asset. I would like to thank you for the tireless work and unseen hours you have put in behind the scenes in helping to make many

programs in this school successful, particularly in relation to PBL and technology. I for one will miss you enormously but I wish you well in this next chapter of your career and I know you won’t miss the daily commute! I would also like to acknowledge the retirement of both Mr Bryan Lyndon and Ms Jane Lino. Your contribution to public education over both of your careers has been outstanding and we thank you for this. We trust you both enjoy your retirements. I can confidently say as a school community, we are providing the best possible experiences and outcomes for our young people. I look forward to working with you all again in 2018. We will have some new staff members on board in 2018, so we will all look forward to welcoming them in the New Year. We will notify who these people will be next year as many are still being placed by staffing now. To our outgoing year 6 I am confident I will continue to hear about you all in the future and you can say proudly ‘I was once a student at Lennox Head Public School’ and I wish you all the very best for your futures. I hope you all have a fantastic summer break and I am looking forward to all of the great things that will be achieved by you all in 2018. New Building Update As many of you may have heard there has now been a delay in the start date for our new classrooms and admin building. This delay is due to the finding of an Aboriginal artefact on site in some of the pre-checks that were conducted through council requirements. In order to ensure that we are sensitive to the needs of everyone, this will now involve a slightly longer process in consultation with the local Aboriginal Land Council, to ensure that we are respectful to the site. This process could lead to a delay of 4 -6 months, but we are hopeful of a positive outcome for all parties. We will keep you informed as we know more. Until the relevant checks are now done, we will also at this point be unable to place the two additional demountables needed for classrooms next year. As a result one class will operate in the current staffroom and the other class will operate in the upstairs area which we use for Kids in the Kitchen. This is not ideal, but as soon as the demountables can be placed on site we will move into these. The staff will use the new staffroom in the admin building at the back of the school. Our admin will continue to operate for the next few months in our current space. School Holiday Security If you happen to be going past the school in the holidays and notice people on site or any damage please contact the school security unit on 1300 880 021 or alternatively call Ballina Police. Hopefully if everyone is vigilant we can keep our school free from any holiday damage or break -ins. Regards, Deb Langfield.

Competitive Swimming Carnival 2018

Please be aware that the competitive swimming carnival on 8 February at Byron Bay Pool is ONLY for students who can confidently and competently swim at least 50 metres successfully in the correct stroke. Perhaps in the holidays if you are unsure of your child's swimming ability you could visit the pool for a test run!! Let Mrs Dyer know first day back if you have changed your mind. Remember there is an all-inclusive fun carnival in Term 4 2018 at Ballina Pool. Enjoy your holiday.

News from the Lab! What a difference a year makes. Following the kind donation of $15000 from the P & C combined with $5000 received from the Department of Industry Makerspace Grant we have been able to grow our technology fleet considerable during 2017. Below is a table of what we have achieved this year. So you may have heard your child talking about robots, Bee-Bots, WeDo2, EV3, Ozobots and Microbits. No you’re not entering a third dimension, just witnessing your child developing 21st Century skills with tools we have been able to purchase and explore this year. Thank you for your ongoing support of Lennox Head Public School.
