A Message fromOur ChaplainRev. Timothy Schott, Carroll, Iowa

The season of Lent is the final, in-tense period of prayer, penance, andpreparation for the Easter sacra-ments of baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist.

For those already initiated intothe Church, Lent prepares us torenew our commitment to Christand his Church. We turn away fromour “coasting along.” We turn to-ward a more deliberate following ofChrist.

The Scripture readings for Massduring this season invite us to thismore deliberate discipleship.Matthew 20:17-28 begins withJesus on the road to Jerusalem, dis-tinctly warning his disciples thatthere he would be condemned, killed, and raised up. Christ spokeabout ultimate things: suffering, death, life.

One would think that after suchan announcement, his discipleswould engage Jesus in some discus-sion, questions, and spiritual direc-tion.

But no. Immediately the motherof James and John asked Jesus forearthly privileges for her sons. Thisis one of several indications thatJesus’ disciples were “coastingalong” with Jesus, not very deliber-ate about going everywhere hewould lead. Are we more deliberatethan they?

Jesus did not answer themother’s question. Instead he di-rected a question to James andJohn: Can you drink the chalice Iam going to drink? What a greatquestion for Lent. Are we commit-ted to following Christ? imitatingChrist? going where Christ leads us?

Of course Christ wants to lead usto his Father, to resurrection andeternal communion with God (sym-

bolized in the Easter sacraments). But Christ teaches us the wholetruth: there will be many “chalices”along the way. Can you drink thechalice I am going to drink?

In my ministry there have beenmany “chalices.” Some chalices havebeen memorably sweet. I have beengiven many opportunities to study, many retreat experiences, manytravels, all of which I have enjoyed. Ihave been blessed to belong to aJesus Caritas Priests’ Fraternity fornearly forty years, a source of greatencouragement and growth. Partici-pation in my diocesan RENEWteam was a wonderful time. Everyparish assignment brought newpeople, new gifts and joys.

Some chalices have been bitter:the deaths of my parents, failures ofsome projects, the divorces of someof my friends, people abandoningthe Church, the news that I had can-cer. These were unwelcome, un-wanted chalices. Could I drinkthem? Well, I could and did…withthe help of Christ. Lord, with you bymy side, enough has been given.May the shelter I seek be always theshadow of your cross.

Can you drink the chalice I amgoing to drink? Christ asks us. Prob-ably most of us pray some kind ofmorning offering each day. We donot know what this particular daywill bring. We hope for a largemeasure of sweetness, but we alsoexpect there will be some bitternessas well.

We learn commitment by prac-tice. We make commitments. Wekeep them, whether easy or difficult. When we fail, we start over. It’s likelove. We learn to love by practicingloving. Lent is an important seasonfor such practice.

We know that God does not sendus suffering and bitterness. Every-day life has some of this. It is part ofthe reality, part of the chaos that isearthly life, like tornadoes andfloods and disease. But we knowthat God is with us in the times ofbitterness as well as in the sweet-ness. So we practice being deliber-ate about how we live, deliberateabout our faith-filled, hope-filled,love-filled lives. Each day we pray:Lord, today will probably bring mesome joys and some sorrows. Helpme to remember that in every expe-rience and circumstance you arewith me, and I am never completelyalone. Help me to be deliberate inthe way I live… deliberately withyou and like you, one of your own.

I am fond of the musical settingof Saint Patrick’s Breastplate: Christ be beside me. Christ be be-

fore me. Christ be behind me, King of my

heart. Christ be within me. Christ be

below me. Christ be above me, never to

part. Christ on my right hand. Christ

on my left hand. Christ all around me, shield in

the strife. Christ in my sleeping. Christ in

my sitting. Christ in my rising, light of my

life. Christ be in all hearts thinking

about me. Christ be on all tongues telling of

me. Christ be the vision in eyes that

see me.In ears that hear me, Christ ever

be. This is a fine prayer for the prac-

tice of being a deliberate disciple ofChrist, listening to him, learningfrom him, imitating him, goingwhere he leads.

Letter from Our National DirectorSusan Moné, Mesa, Arizona

Dear CDA sisters,It seems that Christmas

just ended and the decora-tions packed away for an-other year and here we are acouple weeks into Lent. It istime for all of us to take afew extra minutes to find aquiet place without interrup-tions, and spend that timehaving a conversation withJesus. Walk the road to Cal-vary with Him.

During this Lenten sea-son, may we all put ourselvesin the mindset not so muchthinking of what I am givingup for Lent but rather whatcan I do to make a betterlent, to make a better me?Instead of giving up one ofour vises, how about we giveup on the bad attitudes andunkindness we harboragainst others. Look for oc-casions to ask forgivenessfrom someone we haveharmed by our actionsand/or words. Decide maybeon one person that you have

been especially unkind tothis past year then makeevery effort to go out of yourway to find ways to saysomething nice or do some-thing extra for that person.

Get to know them betterand you may find a differentperson than you thought ordiscover that they are carry-ing a heavy cross and yourkindness could lighten theroad.

Pray daily during Lent forthat person and for yourselfto change your heart. Whoknows, by Easter you maymake a new friend! Godbrings people into our lifeand whether we realize it ornot, they are affected bymeeting us. Are they betterfor having met me or worse?Maybe ask why did Godbring this person into mylife?

Many things are in theworks in the Iowa courtswith our many differentprojects and charities. I am

pleased to know that somehave special Lenten projectsor day of prayer planned. Ipray these will be fruitful foryou and your courts.

Once again it is also timeto elect new officers in yourlocal court. During this timeI will be adding extrathoughts to my daily prayersfor all my CDA sisters. I willbe praying that each courthas ladies who feel called tofill an office. Please pray andthink about stepping up toserve your court.

Say YES to God’s call toshare your time and talentsto be a leader in your court. The Holy Spirit will guideyou, your State officers willtrain you and your State Re-gent and her board will beavailable, as will I to helpyou along the path for thenext 2 years. It is an honor tobe an officer, so please dis-cern the idea so when thenominating committee callsyou, be ready to say, “ab-solutely”!

Also in our local courtsyou will be voting for dele-gates and alternates for ourNational Convention inSioux Falls, SD in July. These delegates act in yourbehalf to be a voice for your

local court and for our CDAin IA. And the convention isnot just for the delegates, itis for every member so thinkabout going and enjoying thethrill of a National Conven-tion and the fun of the fel-lowship with members fromall over the country andmore. Be sure that you areup to date on any member-ship changes in your courtas National bills you accord-ing to what they have re-ceived by the biannualdeadlines. Also be sure youhave no outstanding invoiceswith National before conven-tion. Looking forward toseeing you in Sioux Falls inJuly.

Have a blessed Lent and aJoyous Easter celebratingthe Resurrection of our Lordand King. Take part in asmuch of the special lentenevents, especially Holy Weekas you are able. All of youwill be in my prayers thoughout the 6 weeks of Lent andon Easter Sunday for manyblessings for you and yourfamily. Continue your won-derful work of “Serving theLord with Gladness”!

Blessings to all during thisHoly season of Lent in antici-pation of celebrating therisen Lord. What traditionsdo you have during thistime? It is so nice talkingwith the grandchildren ofwhat we did years ago andwhat their parents did during

Lent and to celebrate Easter.I remember wearing curlersin my hair to Saturdayevening services beforeEaster so my hair would lookgood for the Easter SundayMass only to put my Easterhat on that covered my hairanyway. My children always

thought the services duringHoly Week were long untilthey brought their friends tothe services and talked tothem about it. Traditionsand memories. Be sure toshare them.

In Unity and Charity,Jan GrundmeyerIowa State Regent

you to put CDA in the subject line when emailing herinfo. Most CDA Officers would like you to put CDAthere, also. Please read the poem “He Pointed His Fin-ger at Me” in this issue when thinking about your CourtOfficers. Before you know it, a year from now we willbe looking for State Officers. We have many very goodleaders in CDA that need to go up the ladders and con-sider being District Deputies and State Officers. But

for now we need Local Court Officers to maintain ourmotto, “Unity and Charity”.

I really enjoy receiving your pictures and writeups for the local court section. Please be sure to emailme the pictures in attachments in the pdf format anddo your write up in Microsoft word or docx. Somecourts write a monthly update they send to their mem-bers. Sorry, we don’t have room for these in the Voice.

God’s blessing to you and your families!Karen Kasparbauer1st Vice State Regent

FIGHT DOMESTIC ABUSELIFESAVER CAMPAIGN 2018

April 2018 is designated as Iowa Catholic Daughters 17th LifesaverCampaign. The Lifesaver collection is a Mandatory State Project foreach of Iowa’s 67 Courts.

Domestic Abuse is an escalating National problem. Frequently wehear of such acts of violence in Iowa communities and all too oftenour own neighborhoods. The Catholic Daughters of Iowa’s Lifesavercampaign is one way we can assist victims of such abuse with our fi-nancial assistance to organizations who actively work with theabused men, women, and children.

A weekend in April is designated by each court to collect funds tocontribute to this cause. Contributions from the courts are sought byhaving a 2nd collection at mass (with permission of the pastor); col-lection at the entrance doors of the parishes; or seeking permissionfrom a merchant or shopping mall to collect at their location. LifeSavers are given as a small token of Thanks to the people who con-tribute to the campaign. Each court retains 60% of the funds gener-ated to be contributed to agencies of their choice who DO NOTsupport abortion in any manner as they work with abused individu-als. Of the monies collected, the remaining 40% is sent to the StateCourt (see address below) for distribution. Contributions receivedfrom the courts in each of the four diocese is sent to the Bishop ofthat Diocese for distribution to local agencies of his choice.

Thank you for your prayers and generous financial support for thisState Project. Over the past 16 years your contributions have aidedmany children and adult victims of Abuse. The deadline for sendingchecks to the State Court is May 31. All checks should be made outto the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, have two signatures, andmailed to Kaye Stock Arndorfer. I’m looking forward to receiving thecontributions from the citizens of your communities you have col-lected for this State Project!

Helping the Needy I know that I can help the needy

where I live in many ways. One way

is by going to our local food bank. Ihave done this in the past andhelped pack backpacks and fill bagsof food for families in need of abasic meal. I usually go to the localfood bank once or twice a month. Ilove helping there because it makesme feel really good inside.

Another way I’ve helped thosearound me is by donating lightlyused items to those in foster care. Iknow many kids don’t have niceblankets or even toothbrushes, sofor my birthday I asked for thesedonations. The way I felt after thisexperience was better than any giftI could receive. It made me feel

awesome inside. I understand thatpeople around the world do nothave the things they need. It is sadhow many people today face hungerand thirst, so I want to make a dif-ference.

Some programs that I’ve person-ally found that help people, arelocal food bank or food pantries andalso the program “No Kid Hungry”.I like to encourage others to dotheir share by donating to local foodbanks, donating money to fostercare, or their local humane society. Also, donating money to any charityis a great way to help. There are so

many ways to get out there to helpno matter what your age may be. Iwant to make a change and help theneedy not only in my communitybut in the world’s community aswell. I feel that this is why peopleneed to start lending a hand. Ittakes a lot more than one person tochange the world, but if we all worktogether, just think of what we canaccomplish.

Impacting My WorldI ask myself daily what I can do

to make the world a better place. The problem is our world is so bro-ken already that sometimes I don’teven know where to start. Afterthinking to myself that there isnothing a single person, like me,can do to change the world for thebetter, I then remember Jesus diedon the cross for me and everyonearound me. He changed the worldcompletely for the better and Hewas one person.

Now I know, and I hope every-one knows, that not a single one ofus, or even all of us together, canchange the world like Jesus did. Why? I’m not Jesus and neither isanyone else, and only Jesus has thepower to change the whole world. But you can start by changing onelittle tiny thing in the world. Thatone little thing you do to make animpact could really change one per-son’s life. The more I think thereare so many things you and I can doto make a difference in the life ofthe needy.

HE POINTED HIS FINGER AT METhey asked me to be an officer of CDA. I said,

“Oh no, I couldn’t do that. My plate is already full.”But God pointed His finger at me.

I said “I’m just a small town girl. Someone elsemay do better, you see.” He said, “My discipleswere simple folk.” And He pointed His finger atme.

I said, “My family demands all my time, so thehappier they will be.” He said, “You’ll grow in pa-tience and love.” And He pointed His finger at me.

I said, “I can’t. For I get so nervous I can scarcelysee.” But He promised He would calm my fears, asHe pointed His finger at me.

“But in CDA there is so much to do, and withthem I do not always agree.” Tolerance and under-standing He promised as He pointed His finger atme.

I said, “My talents are few. A leader I’ll neverbe.” He said, “But they shall be multiplied.” AndHe pointed His finger at me.

I said, “I’d like to use my leisure time to gainpopularity.” He said “God’s love is more importantthan man’s.” And He pointed His finger at me.

So I said a prayer and answered “Yes,” To thisfine opportunity. My life has been blessed in manyways since He pointed His finger at me.

If you are called, the Lord’s work to do, say “Yes,I give all to Thee.” And you, too, will be glad as Ihave been glad, that God pointed His finger at me.

I have done to make an impact on a life ofsomeone in need, is the Then Feed Just Oneprogram. The whole program is based onthe words of Mother Theresa. She said, “Ifyou can’t feed a hundred people, then justfeed one.” While packing food and sendingit to those in need did make me feel goodabout myself. I bet it also made God veryhappy seeing His people working for thebetter. I have taken part in the Then JustFeed One program for the past three yearsand loved it. Just this year I went to helpout at the program in my town called TheBackpack Program. To help out my class-mates and I packed different foods in a bagthat would be taken to schools around mytown and put in the book bags of thoseneeding more food over the weekend. Itbroke my heart to find out that there werekids in my town going hungry and the factthat I could help out made me so happy.

After doing Then Just Feed One and TheBackpack Program I thought about all thekids in other countries needing help andsupport. In countries like Haiti and Africathe extreme poverty rate is averaging out atabout 53%. So that means that 53% of citi-zens in Africa and Haiti are living on lessthan $1.25 a day. For the past couple ofyears I have wanted to go to Haiti and helpthose 53% of people living in poverty. Evenif I only helped 0.01% or maybe even oneperson, it would still be worth it because inthe end it’s that one person I helped that ismaking this world one step closer to theworld that God want it to be.

Hitting Close to Home“They have freely scattered their gifts to

the poor, their righteousness endures for-ever; their horn will be lifted high in honor,”Psalm 112:9. In the Bible, Gods speaksoften of the poor and needy. He commands

us to give generously to them and to speakup on their behalf. Those who have morethan necessary are to give back to thosewithout the essentials in life. Jesus and Hisfollowers lived in poverty. Jesus was with-out a place to rest His head at night or aplace to call a home. But He was spirituallyrich and God wants that for each and everyone of us.

In Black Hawk County 17.3 percent of thepopulation lives in poverty. That percent-age is equal to 21,437 people. This numberis tied for the highest poverty estimate inIowa, according to the bureau. Those inneed are in our own communities, they areour next-door neighbors, the women at thebus stop, or the man who works three jobs.People who have little to no income walkamong us, every day, but we are too busy tonotice.

In Black Hawk County, I help the needyin various ways. Throughout the past year Ihave volunteered at the Northeast IowaFood Bank. I packed backpack meals, aprogram for area kids who do not have foodover the weekends and holidays when theyare not in school. Another place I have vol-unteered at is the Salvation Army. There Icleaned the building, organized books, andpainted the shelter. The people who residethere were very thankful. Not only did Ivisit these area organizations, but also theCatholic Worker House. The CatholicWorker House is hospitality for the home-less, exiled, hungry, and forsaken. A groupof friends and I made a meal and served itto the families who lived in the shelter. Thiswas quite the eye-opening experience. I wasable to sit down and have a meal with thefamilies and really connect with what theywere experiencing in their everyday lives. Itruly learned how blessed I am.

Where I live, poverty lives. I’m sur-rounded each and every day by those whowould love to live in my shoes. I take my lifefor granted. I intend to give back more thanI already have. I want to continue to volun-teer at various organizations in the area andmake a difference in the lives of others.Today and every day, I am grateful for theroof over my head, the food on my plate, and the clothes on my body. For those with-out these necessities I hope to change thatin any way possible.

Sr. Mary Paul Writes...St. Peter heard a racket; so he went to "the

gates". Sure enough, that's where all the noise was

coming from. And He found its source. It was a guy in a long black coat with a wide

rimmed hat. Peter said, "What are you doinghere?"

Guy replied, "I want to come in". Peter said, "You look Questionable. I have to

talk to the Boss." He explained everything to God and God said:

"Aaw! Let him in." So Peter went back; but theguy was gone! So were "the Gates"!!!!!

AssigningSeminarians

There have been questions aboutthe assigning of the seminarians tothe courts. We get the list from thedioceses. We have 4 diocese, 67CDA courts, and 62 seminarians. Anadditional 51 seminarians from Di-vine Word College, Epworth Iowa, these men are studying to be mis-sionaries and not from Iowa. This isthe only college in US that preparesmen for missions.

I try and assign the men to thesame court through all their years inseminary. If there is a new seminar-ian that your court would like tohave please let me know by Augustas I try and get this out to you foryour first fall meeting. These menneed everyone’s prayers; they havesacrificed much to serve.

We don’t have enough seminari-ans to give two per court and some-times the men change their callingwhile in school, or even after I getthe list from the diocese.

Please let me know if I can be ofmore help or any help you can giveme; open for suggestions.

Cedar Rapids Court #1768, St.Therese, the Little Flower, hostedspeaker Sister Mary Klisart of theDubuque Sisters of St. Francis at theFebruary meeting, and learned abouttheirSister Water Project, providingwater accessibility in Honduras, Cen-tral America and in Tanzania, Africa.

We learned that 50,000 childrenunder 5 years of age in Honduras dieannually from water-related illness, and that once a water system is inplace, daily diarrhea may decline by asmuch as 90% in 3-4 months.

Funding provides pipes, pumps, andmaterials for a water system. In Tanza-nia many rural schools have no accessto portable water, and women and girlswalk many kilometers to fetch water ofpoor quality. Life expectancy is 46

years. Funding provides concreterings, well covers, hand pumps, under-ground cisterns, labor, and transporta-tion.

Sister Mary Klisart of the Dubuque Sisters of St. Francis
