THE COLLECT Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit into the wilderness and was tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 9 beginning at the 8th verse Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, "Behold, I establish my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth." And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will look upon it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth."

preached to the spirits in prison, who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water. Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers subject to him.

Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son; with thee I am well pleased." The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to him.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings

Liturgical scholarship has long held that the season of Lent developed as a gradual backward observance of a short penitential period in preparation for baptism at Easter.

In other words to understand the meaning of the start of Lent one has to take a look at the end of the season which is the celebration of our Lord’s glorification during the Easter season.

Professor Maxwell Johnson states that the period of fasting extended backward to include Holy/Passion Week and eventually to become a period of forty days beginning on Ash Wednesday.

The forty day period of fasting was linked theologically to our Lord’s fasting in the wilderness for forty days after which he was tempted by Satan.

The significance of this period, says Professor Patrick Regan, finds fulfillment in the sacraments of baptism and Eucharist wherein the glorified Lord established his presence in the church.

Lent them is marked as an ascetical period, with heavy notions of penance, carrying with it the need for forgiveness of sin and the determination to live out one’s baptismal life more fully.

It was with notions of living a new life after Easter Baptism, that Lent took on profound penitential overtones with the understanding that persons must be prepared to give up old ways in preparation for their Baptism.

The notion of giving up behaviors for Lent perhaps springs from this and can still be useful as we prepare to renew our vows at the Great Easter Vigil on the evening of Holy Saturday.

There are however no selfish perceptions regarding Lent. It is not so much about “me”; but rather about "us" in the community making that effort to grow closer to Christ together.

We must use Lent to grow in our devotion to our Lord as he meets us in the blessed Sacrament of the Altar and as we turn our gaze outward to effecting change in our society.

May we use this Lenten season to assume some new duty or responsibility, and may God almighty give us the grace follow him more closely at this time and in the coming Easter Season.

Turn below the Chapel, go up the hill past the playing field, turn left on Corel Drive and head back in the direction of Fort George and back to St. David.
