O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and steadfast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 22 beginning at the 1st verse After these things God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here am I." He said, "Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Mori'ah, and offer him there as a burnt offering upon one of the mountains of which I shall tell you." So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac; and he cut the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place afar off. Then Abraham said to his young men, "Stay here with the ass; I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you." And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So they went both of them together. son." He said, "Behold, the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?" Abraham said, "God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son." So they went both of them together. When they came to the place of which God had told him, Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Romans Chapter 8 beginning at the 31st verse. What then shall we say to this? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, will he not also give us all things with him? Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies; who is to condemn? Is it Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us? Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, "For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time Jesus began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him. But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men." And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it. For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings

Stations of the Cross is an extra liturgical service, meaning that like Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament it has a place among popular devotions; but is not part of the mainstream liturgy like the Holy Eucharist or Evensong.

In our Diocese it has formed part of the spiritual palette of many Anglicans and is a well known Lenten devotion.

“Stations” as it is popularly called. waned a bit as part of the solemn season of Lent; but there is good reason for its elevation as part of the discipline at this time of year .

The origins of Stations of the Cross go back as far as the fourth century. the pilgrim Egeria, in her diary of a visit to the Holy Land, described a pilgrimage which took place to commemorate Jesus’ path from Pilate’s judgment hall, to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

That route through Jerusalem’s Old City gained acceptance as the way Jesus went to his death. It is known as the Via Dolorosa, Latin for the "Sorrowful Way”. Stops developed on the way to note specific events on the road to Calvary.

This clearly was intended to ritualize the action of Jesus as he carried the cross, in order to bring more meaningfully into memory the awesome sacrifice that he made for us.

Christopher Walsh explains that the devotion can be used privately, silently and informally with or without texts.

He goes on to say that more public forms are celebrated with a vested minister along with acolytes and crucifer doing the circuit, with the congregation following or remaining in their pews if they so choose.

In liturgical art we have placed poignant images in the walls of some christian churches in order that Jesus’ sacrifice may be imprinted in our memory.

The fourteen stations of the cross are meant to help us realize that we too are on a journey; one that is at times filled with pain and sorrow; but that at the end we too will attain newness of life.

Let us ask God for the grace of making 6:00pm each Friday evening in Lent a Holy Hour, so that our participation in the Paschal Mystery at the Easter weekend may carry more meaning for us as parish.
