HOLY WEEK AND EASTER SERVICES
Holy Week and Easter will see the seventh Easter at King’s. The ChapelChoir will, as always, play an important part in this, opening the festivalwith Bach St John Passion on Tuesday 19 April. Other events includethe Tenebrae Responsories of Victoria, the four hundredth anniversaryof whose death occurs this year, which will be presented liturgically onMaundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. Further details ofthe concerts and how to book tickets appear later in this booklet.
MUSIC
Contemporary music features strongly this term. The season of Epiphanyis longer than usual because of the very late occurrence of Easter: this givestime to include a number of the College’s recent Christmas commissions, beginning with the most recent, by Rautavaara, at the first service ofterm.Richard Rodney Bennett celebrates his 75th birthday this year, and willbe presenting a cabaret with Claire Martin in Hall on Saturday 5 March.Earlier, at Evensong, the choral scholars will perform his Sermons andDevotions, settings of John Donne, originally written for The King’sSingers, and Parker Ramsay, junior organ scholar, will play Richard’sAlba in the organ recital on that day. Ben-San Lau, senior organ scholar, provides a rare chance for us to hear Messiaen La Nativité du Seigneuron Saturday 5 February. In place of Evensong on Monday 14 March, King’s Voices will performVia Crucis by Liszt, the two hundredth anniversary of whose birth ismarked this year. His work is also celebrated in the organ recital onSaturday 12 March.
