Remembrance Memorial Wall

Late last year, the vestry approved the proposal from the Memorial Garden Committee (MGC) to build a Remembrance Memorial Wall alongside the common urn, just west of the Memorial Chapel. This wall will have room for 170 tiles that are 4” by 8”—enough room for the name and dates of the person you wish to remember.

This picture is an artist’s rendition of the wall. After the 10:30 am services on Sunday, March 13, members of the MGC will attend a table in the commons to answer questions and accept applications. The plaques will be offered at a special introductory price with 4”x 8” available for $150.00.

The special price for larger plaques (8” x 8”) will be $400.00.

Please be sure to stop by on March 13 and find out more about this Remembrance Wall! Submitted by Chris Schumacher

St. Matthew’s Labyrinth in Lent

The St. Matthew's labyrinth is in the sanctuary during Lent until Good Friday, March 25.

ALL groups and individuals are invited and encouraged to visit and experience the refreshing moments of solitude that the labyrinth can bring to your day. You may gain access to the labyrinth during the week by picking up a key in the church office during business hours: Monday-Friday, 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.

The labyrinth path winds throughout and becomes a mirror for where we are in our lives. That means that each time you walk the labyrinth, you experience and learn something different.

If you walk it with an open mind and open heart, it will touch your sorrows and release your joys!

“Holy and Gracious God... fountain of all wisdom, be ever present to those who walk the labyrinth seeking your guidance, that they may here be enlightened and strengthened for their journey, and grown in knowledge and love of you, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.” AMEN Submitted by Judy Neely

Make a donation to Heifer in Honor of that Special Someone, send them a Heifer Gift Card letting them know a “sheep” was given in their name. It’s the perfect gift for that someone who has everything and the best part is, the gift continues to give.

Make a Lenten Rule to benefit Heifer. Give up that daily Starbucks habit and donate the money to buy a trio of chicks or even a hive of bees.

In Sunday School, the children will learn about Heifer and the difference their giving can make. Ark banks will be given to each child and can be used to collect change. The banks will be accompanied by a calendar that gives kids ideas on how to earn money to help purchase animals for needy families around the world.

By supporting Heifer International, YOU are enabling others to feed themselves! Please join us in our efforts. Together we CAN help end world hunger.

If you would like more information on Heifer, please visit our table in the Commons on Sunday mornings. We would love to have your help during our Lenten Project. To volunteer, please

contact Lisa Hobbs at [email protected] or at 512-297-7792.

Our Lenten Tradition at St. Matthew’s Continues in 2016.

This month, the Outreach Commission will kick off our annual drive to sup-port Heifer International. Heifer has helped millions of struggling families become more self-reliant by providing food and income producing animals and training in their care. Those families that receive the animal then pass on one or more of their animal’s offspring to other families in need. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

During each Sunday in Lent you will have an opportunity to buy a cow, a goat or a trio of rabbits to help fill an Ark. The cost to fill one Ark with pairs of animals is $5000.00.

How many Arks can we fill in 2016?

Supporting Caritas Food Pantries in full Technicolor!

Remembering to bring a food item each Sunday for St. Matt’s Caritas Food program just got easier. Free colorful carrier bags are now available to help remind you. Please collect one from the bag stand at the Caritas Food Pantry corner in the Sanctuary Commons. If you already have a yellow one and aren’t using it for whatever reason, we would be grateful if you would return it to us.

The St. Matt’s Caritas Food Program has a vision that each household that attends Sunday services brings a can/package of food for the Caritas Food Pantries, which provide meals for the hungry in the Austin area. We estimate that 200 households attend each Sunday, so a year’s contribution could be more than 10,000 pounds of food, our goal for 2016.

At the moment, there is a particular need for: smooth peanut butter, skillet meals, canned ham, canned or plastic bottled pasta sauce, pasta, cooking oil, canned mixed vegetables, canned corn and cereal.

Please do not bring food items that are past their expiration dates as they will be thrown away. Food should also not be in glass containers. Caritas collection baskets can be found in Sanctuary Commons and in Huffman Hall.

If you weren’t able to bring an item this week and would like to contribute, you are welcome to place a $1.00 donation in the Caritas money box, near the collection baskets in the Sanctuary Commons. Thank you. Submitted by: Jane Baxter Lynn

Easter Egg Fillers Needed!

The Family Ministry Team is in full gear preparing for Easter Sunday—one of the most exciting events at St. Matthew's is the annual Easter Egg Hunt (after the 9:00 and 11:00 services). We are in need of Easter candy, snacks, toys, stickers, etc. The stuffing has started and we have MANY eggs to go! Please drop off donated items in the Easter boxes in the Commons or the parish office. We are so grateful for your support of this fun event! Thank you in advance.

Early Communion Training Family Ministry will be hosting an Early Communion Training on Sunday, March 13, from 12:00 - 2:00 pm in B- 21. This will be an introductory class for children to discover the many aspects of communion. All baptized children are welcome at the communion rail at St. Matthew’s, no matter what their age. The parent decides when a child is ready to begin to receive communion. A child can certainly participate in communion without being a graduate of the Commun-ion Class; however, there comes a time when a child is ready for more “formal” communion instruction. Participating in this class will help your child learn the meaning of Communion. All are welcome at the altar. Your child has the opportunity to discover answers for his or her Eucharistic questions. If your child is between the ages of 5 and 12, has been baptized, not yet attended a Communion Class and is asking questions about what it means, please attend the next Early Communion Training. Please contact Susan Goodman for more information or to register your child. Lunch will be served at the training for the children. Submitted by Susan Goodman
