From our Pastor
The Music of the Soul Greetings in Christ!
During a recent trip I was able to watch the movie Bohemian Rhapsody on the airplane.
While there are some factual inaccuracies in the movie, it is an excellent portrayal of the
British rock band Queen and their lead singer Freddie Mercury. It brought back a lot of
memories from my childhood.
My introduction to Queen was in England. My family was visiting family there in the
early eighties, and my brother and I were playing with our cousins. It was raining
outside (go figure) so we were inside and had the radio on as background noise. And for
me, much of what was playing was just that, noise.
And then I heard something that caught my attention: “bum-bum-bum, ba-da-da, bum”.
It was the base line for the song, “Another One Bites the Dust.” I asked my older cousin,
“Who is That!” She looked at me as if I was from another planet and said, “That’s
Queen.” I was memorized by the song and the voice. Everything else on the radio
basically sounded the same, but nothing sounded like that.
As I was watching the movie, and hearing all the familiar songs, the memories came
flooding back. Things I haven’t thought about in years. I have to admit, I even got
emotional at times.
Music does that. It affects us in ways that mere words cannot. I am reminded of this
every time (which is daily, if not several times a day), that at 16 months old, my son
Christos will stop and dance to a certain song that he knows, even if it comes on the
television as a commercial.
The Church knows this as well. It is why we chant hymns. Hymns that are familiar to
us. Hymns that bring back memories. Hymns that draw us closer to God. Hymns that
can move us, even make us emotional.
This is especially true during Great Lent and Holy Week. Hymns specific to Great Lent that lift up our soul, create
emotion in us, remind us of the nature of the season. Hymns like: “For God is with Us,” “Let My Prayer Arise,” the
Akathyst Hymn, the Hymn of Kassiane, “Symeron Kremate” (“Today is Hung upon the Cross”), and of course,
“Christ is Risen.”
I encourage you to join us for the Lenten services and
Holy Week to hear, and sing with us, these hymns. I pray
that they may touch your soul too.
With Love in Christ,
Rev. Father Simon Thomas,
Parish Priest
“Lovers of God are moved
to spiritual joy, to divine
love, and to tears both by
worldly and by religious
songs; but lovers of pleas-
ure are moved to the op-
posite.”
St John of the Ladder
“Behold, the Bridegroom is
coming in the middle of the
night, and blessed is the
servant whom He shall find
watching; and again un-
worthy is he whom He shall
find heedless. Beware,
therefore, O my soul, do
not be weighted down with
sleep, lest you be given up
to death, and be shut out of
the Kingdom. But rouse
yourself and cry out: Holy,
holy, holy are You, O our
God. Through the interces-
sions of the Theotokos,
have mercy on us.”

From our President
Thank you to all our volunteers that made
February a successful month in our community.
We had many events scheduled that brought our
parish family together and the Parish Council is excited about bringing
new opportunities over Great Lent.
We are proud of our GOYAn’s who are making an effort to fundraise to
establish an ongoing fund to support our current and future students who
wish to participate in the Ionian Village Summer Camp. Their success is
our success! The Parish Council recently delegated committee assignments
for our ongoing maintenance and beautification projects. Please look out
for future details about these projects.
During Great Lent our parish has a tradition of welcoming guest speakers
to offer a presentation on various topics. Our Memphis community is
grateful that we have such talented individuals making the trip to visit us.
As a friendly reminder, our annual Memphis Greek Festival is scheduled
for Friday & Saturday, May 10th & 11th. Your participation is key to
making this a successful event. The Festival Workshops have been added
to the Parish Calendar and additional volunteer opportunities will be
available in the upcoming weeks.
Thank you for being a member of our community. If there certain ideas
that you have for the betterment of our parish,
please contact a Parish Council member. In His Service,

Special Note from Father Simon:
It is important that the children and their teachers receive Holy Communion first, so they may have
as much time as possible to learn about our Faith. Please proceed with your children to the Narthex
after “Our Father” is read, to line them up for Holy Communion. Once our youth have received, the
ushers will dismiss the faithful by row. Thank you for your assistance!

Book Review by Billy Benson
The Forgotten Medicine: The Mystery of Repentance By Archimandrite Seraphim Aleksiev
St. Xenia Skete Press, Wildwood, CA
One of the marvelous things that Orthodoxy offers is the Sacrament of Confes-
sion. It cleanses our soul, offering us a place to relieve ourselves of the burdens of
our passions while teaching us how to better make our way through this life in our
journey of growth and communion with Christ. This little book ( 72 pages in all)
is a great way to come to both an understanding of the need for repentance and the
proper way to prepare for Confession.
The Forgotten Medicine readies the path with a story of a Rich Traveler who is
seeking a place to stay. Along his journey he comes to many homes, some grand
and some not so grand, yet finds the interior of the homes all lack proper care.
Only through the Mystery of Confession, our interiors can be cleansed and main-
tained, inner peace restored to the grand design that we were created for. Through
the book, the reader will find chapters covering the aspects of sin and its effects
on our lives, the many objections to Confession one may have, the proper way to
prepare for a Confession, and the joys and benefits of regular Confession.
The book is written for all levels of understanding, no matter where we are in our
journey. Archimandrite Seraphim writes with both simplicity and clarity, covering
all areas of Confession. This little book can be read on a regular basis without be-
coming old and repetitive, as a constant reminder on both the need and how to
prepare for Confession. It’s a regular read in our household and I have little doubt
that many will find it a helpful guide in preparation for Holy Communion.
As with all spiritual books, I always suggest that you share your insights and
questions with your father confessor to help fully understand the intent of the au-
thor.
Archimandrite Seraphim
Aleksiev
10 Come and See...
March 25th
Six months after John the Forerunner's conception, the
Archangel Gabriel was sent by God to Nazareth, a town of
Galilee, unto Mary the Virgin, who had come forth from
the Temple a mature maiden (see Nov. 21). According to
the tradition handed down by the Fathers, she had been
betrothed to Joseph four months. On coming to Joseph's
house, the Archangel declared: "Rejoice, thou Full of
Grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among
women." After some consideration, and turmoil of soul,
and fear because of this greeting, the Virgin, when she had
finally obtained full assurance concerning God's
unsearchable condescension and the ineffable
dispensation that was to take place through her, and
believing that all things are possible to the Most High, answered in humility: "Behold the handmaid
of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word." And at this, the Holy Spirit came upon her, and the
power of the Most High overshadowed her all-blameless womb, and the Son and Word of God, Who
existed before the ages, was conceived past speech and understanding, and became flesh in her
immaculate body (Luke 1:26-38).
Bearing in her womb the Uncontainable One, the blessed Virgin went with haste from Nazareth to
the hill country of Judea, where Zacharias had his dwelling; for she desired to find Elizabeth her
kinswoman and rejoice together with her, because, as she had learned from the Archangel, Elizabeth
had conceived in her old age. Furthermore, she wished to tell her of the great things that the Mighty
One had been well-pleased to bring to pass in her, and she greeted Elizabeth and drew nigh to her.
When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, she felt her six-month-old babe, Saint John the Baptist,
prophesied of the dawning of the spiritual Sun. Immediately, the aged Elizabeth was filled with the
Holy Spirit and recognized her as the Mother of her Lord, and with a great voice blessed her and the
Fruit that she held within herself. The Virgin also, moved by a supernatural rejoicing in the spirit,
glorified her God and Savior, saying: "My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in
God my Saviour," and the rest, as the divine Luke hath recorded (1:39-55)

Lenten Charity—The Loukoumi Foundation to help St. Jude
This Lent, we are partnering with the Loukoumi foundation. All are
invited to make get-well cards for the patients! Any words of
encouragement or well-wishes are welcome. Additionally, we will
collect money—even a dollar at a time!—to raise money for a reading
room at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in connection with their
STARR Program.
What is St. Jude’s STARR Program?
Because patients at St. Jude often miss periods of school due to their
medical treatments, St. Jude has created the STARR Program to ensure
that patients have the reading skills they need for academic success.
STARR stands for Success Through Academics Resources and Research.
When patients visit St. Jude for check-ups and consultations with
doctors and specialists they visit the Hematology Clinic known as the
“H Clinic.” The exam rooms off the waiting area are not only used by
physicians to treat the patients but also simultaneously by STARR
program coordinators, who meet with patients in the rooms, before,
during or after their treatments and check-ups, to facilitate the
program.
Children who have completed the St. Jude reading clinic during the
past eight years have shown significant gains in reading skills. The
collaboration ties in the acts of caring and giving with literacy.
Let’s make a difference together!
