DESCRIPTION

LISTEN: https://soundcloud.com/leogrant/jump-cut-studyThis piece was constructed using ‘found’ musical material*, which I treated like an audio recording and ‘cut into’ at various points. Beats, bars or whole sections are erased (or ‘jumped’), with the occasional repetition or restarted phrase. This sets up a relationship between the rhythmic regularity of the original material and the irregular cuts, the pacing of which creates its own continuity. The end result is intended to sound neutral and impassive on the local level, but cumulatively inexorable and awkwardly insistent.* Two superimposed melodic lines taken from Bach Fugues in parallel keys: F Major and f minor, from the Well-Tempered Clavier.

  • Leo Grant Jump Cut Study (2014)

This piece was constructed using found musical material*, which I treated like an audio recording and cut into at various points. Beats, bars or whole sections are erased (or jumped), with the occasional repetition or restarted phrase. This sets up a relationship between the rhythmic regularity of the original material and the irregular cuts, the pacing of which creates its own continuity. The end result is intended to sound neutral and impassive on the local level, but cumulatively inexorable and awkwardly insistent.

    * Two superimposed melodic lines taken from Bach Fugues in parallel keys: F Major and f minor, from the Well-Tempered Clavier.

    Performance Instructions

Vertical arrows in the score mark the location of the jump cuts

There should be no overlap (i.e. pedalling or held notes) before and after each cut

The cuts should sound jerky and uneven with respect to the original Fugal material, so as to foreground the impact of the rhythmic disruption

The piece is to be played with a consistent dynamic throughout. The dynamic level may be chosen by the performer
