Sapphires have been used in jewelry since ancient times. Although most people think of sapphire as blue, it can actually be almost any color of the rainbow;

pink, yellow, green, purple, even colorless! Every color of corundum falls under the name sapphire except for red. Sapphire is a color variation of the mineral corundum – and so is ruby. Ruby and sapphire are technically the same mineral, only colored by different trace elements.The most rare and sought-after fancy colored sapphire is a lovely pinkish orange called Padparadscha. The name means “lotus blossom” after the warm colors of that flower. Padparadscha sapphires are found in Sri Lanka and they can command a hefty price tag.After Padparadscha, vivid pink sapphire is the most expensive, and then brilliant yellow and fiery orange. Colorless sapphire is often used as a diamond alternative for a durable stone with a thrifty price. Green and purple sapphires are less commonly seen.Montana is a great source of fancy colored sapphires that are generally unenhanced with heat. The countries of eastern Africa boast nearly the whole rainbow and produce some very fine gems.Sapphire is the birthstone for September, so if blue isn’t your color you have a whole lot more to choose from!
