foreworD

It would be remiss of me not to let this fore-

word be dominated by arguably the most

important stock in trade auction of antiques

and objects in Australian history. Graham

Geddes has participated in select auctions

before but this is unquestionably the larg-

est and most expansive offering of his High

Street business ever undertaken. Leonard

Joel are honoured to have been selected by

Graham Geddes Antiques as the sole agent

for this historical stock in trade auction and

with international collector interest already

surrounding the sale, it is no exaggeration

to state that collectors are being offered a

unique opportunity to acquire the best of

European, Asian and English furniture, deco-

ration, objects and design.

This important single-owner auction of

Graham Geddes Antiques & Objects marks

more than 90 years of Leonard Joel special-

ist auctions and while this is the most excit-

ing one I have ever participated in, I will

briefly look back at some others that grabbed

my attention when we recently delved in to

the voluminous shelves and boxes of Leon-

ard Joel catalogues that fill literally every

spare space at our South Yarra rooms. The

first that intrigued me was one dating from

1943 – the National

Gallery of Victoria

no less had clearly

decided a “spring

clean” was in order

and engaged Leon-

ard Joel to disperse

porcelain and

objects from their,

even then, vast col-

lection. The auc-

tion took place at

the NGV; a venue

that would never

be contemplated

today for such a

dispersal but what

an auction it must

have been. To this

day pieces re-present themselves to Leon-

ard Joel and it is a constant reminder of how

interwoven we are with Melbourne’s collect-

ing community. The second catalogue auc-

tion I would love to have attended was no

less than the Maharaja of Mysore’s collection

of antiques and

objects. I was

only five at the

time and I under-

stand that at that

auction in 1974 a

full-size carriage

was purchased

and presumably

sits somewhere

in an Australian

warehouse one

day to perhaps

reappear. How

splendid that

would be. The

list of historic

s i n g l e - o w n e r

auctions that

Leonard Joel has conducted runs in to the

hundreds so I will draw the line at this last

one that we discovered from the year 1953. In

that year over three days The Keith Murdoch

Collection of Antiques took place in Albany

Road, Toorak. For house contents auctions

in the contemporary era a day is the norm,

two days a rarity and three, well, they are the

type of house contents auction, full to the

brim, that we dream about. I would love to

have been there – the Australian equivalent

of what a William Randolph Hearst auction

might have been like!

And so on September 15th – 17th 2012 Leon-

ard Joel, 59 years after Keith Murdoch’s dis-

persal, gets another opportunity to conduct

one of those grand, almost never-ending,

very social and exciting auctions that will

dominate Melbourne discussion for the week

before and the week after in collector circles.

The Graham Geddes Collection of Impor-

tant Antiques & Objects is probably the most

important stock in trade auction of the post-

war period in Australia and we are thrilled

to have been entrusted by Graham to act as

auctioneer and in the process continue our

tradition of handling the finest single-owner

auctions.

On Sunday August 26th one of the largest

single-owner dispersals of contemporary art

was undertaken at Leonard Joel’s South Yarra

rooms and was supported by a record number

of attendees. Emanating from the Australian

Art Investment Trust, now under a deed of

administration, more than 300 works repre-

senting some of Australia’s most prolific art-

ists and sculptors were offered at public auc-

tion. Given the current subdued market the

auction was eagerly anticipated as a barom-

eter for the health and direction of the market

for both collectors and sellers alike. For many

of these artists the differential between their

gallery prices and their market prices was

extreme so artists and owners of these artists’

work were hoping for strong results. The auc-

tion did not disappoint with no less than 12

record auction prices – the highest price for

the auction was for lot 336, Geoff Dyer’s strik-

ing work Untitled (Bushfire Series) II , which

realised $14,640 IBP. Other Australian auction

records were set for: Ben Shearer, Graham

Fransella (for graphics and works on paper),

Idris Murphy, Ian Grant, Emma Camden

(glass), Joanna Logue, Peter Blizzard, Peter

D Cole (painting), Jorg Schmeisser, Neil Tay-

lor and Ben Hall. One of the more extraordi-

nary results was for lot 163 by an artist not yet

identified that after lengthy bidding realised

$4,392 IBP against an estimate of $200 - $400.

The sale realised $500,200 IBP, 97% by lot

and a staggering 205 % by value.

John Albrecht, Head of Corporate & Private

Collections, commented: “Before the auction

we received significant public pressure about

our necessarily conservative pricing but in

reality we were guided by existing auction

results – these results tied our hands to ensure

we were sensibly pricing. Many artists would

have preferred the auction not to go ahead

for fear of auction results but I hope that now

they will see the benefit of building an auction

profile. We achieved very healthy results for

artists that will now only reassure collectors

that their works are becoming more stable

investments in a clearly challenging market.

Today we notched up no less than twelve Aus-

tralian auction records over the $2,000 mark

and many more under that – I’m happy for

the artists and I’m happy for collectors and

pleased by the record number of new faces we

saw at the auction today.”

A SELECTION OF NOVELTY WALKING STICKS FROM A PRIVATE SINGLE OWNER COLLECTION

NoVeLTy VALUe

A RARE STERLING SILVER MOUNTED STONEWARE CLARET JUG IN THE FORM OF A HARPY, MAKER’S MARK ALEXANDER CRICHTON, LONDON CIRCA 1877$4,000 - $6,000

In the current climate of fluctuating values

and demand for what are considered to be

the traditional decorative arts, emerging

niche markets have seen a gravitation of

collectors toward the quirky and unusual,

often with astonishing results. One notable

example of the reinterpretation of standard

forms in the decorative arts is the novelty

accessory. These can take many different

forms, from something as simple as a nut-

meg grater through to an elaborate anima-

lia claret jug, but all share in common a pre-

occupation with form over function born

of the Victorian era and carried on in the

twentieth century.

In Leonard Joel’s November Classic Fur-

niture, Objects and Design auction, collec-

tors of novelty accessories will find iconic

examples of the category including a single

owner collection of over one hundred nov-

elty walking sticks. The collection, to be

sold in individual lots and groups, encom-

passes accessories fit for myriad pastimes

and occupations, from horseracing to golf-

ing, musical instruments and even a drink-

ing flask walking stick - ideal for long after-

noon promenades!

In the category of silver, a sterling silver

mounted animalia claret jug in the form of a

mythological Harpy bird, by the renowned

London silversmith, Alexander Crichton,

is another outstanding example of the cat-

egory. Crichton’s novelty creations are

one such item which has challenged the

recent trend of saleroom to smelter which

has befallen much of the traditional silver

market in recent times, as less interesting

pieces are purchased simply for their mate-

rial value. In 2010, sterling silver mounted

claret jug by Crichton, modelled in the form

of a walrus replete with ivory tusks, was

sold by Leonard Joel for $22,800(IBP). The

example to be offered in November will

attract an estimate of $4,000-$6,000.

Over the years, Leonard Joel has attracted

many different people for many a varied rea-

son. From the stealthy antiquer in search of

their next major masterpiece, to the hum-

bled first home owner casting aside their

collection of Ikea allen keys in pursuit of a

more unique way to furnish their new abode.

Every now and then, Leonard Joel also hap-

pens to attract some rather non assuming

stars. Though there is no arguing that many

of Leonard Joel's auctioneers do give per-

formances worthy of a standing ovation, the

stars in question are of a more inanimate

nature. To be specific, one incredibly talented

suitcase has recently traded in its life in mel-

bourne's showrooms for a new world basking

in the limelight.

As part of this years Melbourne Fringe Fes-

tival, adult puppet and physical theatre com-

pany, Smallpox Theatre, will present their

highly innovative use of vintage suitcases

and other overlooked items from various

lots. From dusty old trunks converted into

laundry sinks to old bed sheets transformed

into raunchy puppet bedroom scenes, David

'Splatt' Rosenblatt and Gemma Lark have

found worlds of inspiration in seemingly odd

places.

First performed on the 10th floor of a carpark

during the 2012 Adelaide Fringe Festival,

'A Grim era' (an anagram of the word 'Mar-

riage'), tells the darkly romantic and deeply

dysfunctional love story of two vagabond

clowns stuck in a world of romantic monot-

ony. Like molasses trickling down the tail of

an old dead cat, this visually stunning silent

piece is a sickly sweet depiction of a rather

sticky situation.

Spawned from the misspent youths of a pup-

peteer and a storyteller, Smallpox Theatre

is the collaboration of Splatt & Lark, two

multi-disciplinary, Melbourne based theatre

makers. Working in a contemporary style of

hybrid puppet theatre, Smallpox marry pup-

petry, vaudeville, mime, clowning, sideshow

(and suitcases), to create a mode of visual

storytelling that is intimate, poetic and gro-

tesquely playful. The sweet nostalgic styling

of this duo and the dark, twisted surrealism

that engulfs the Smallpox world makes for a

manner of performance that will delight, dis-

turb and if you’re especially lucky, disfigure*.

Page 23: LEONARD, issue 10, September 2012

For the discerning collector, the artworks of

Guy Grey-Smith have a particular resonance

and attraction. Equally powerful as a painter,

printmaker and ceramist, this Western Aus-

tralian artist is championed in his home state

but is seriously underappreciated in the east.

Fortunately, this may be about to change

with the recent release of Guy Grey-Smith:

Life Force, the first monograph on his career

despite having died some thirty years ago.

Born in 1916 in the wheatbelt town of Wagin,

Grey-Smith’s youth was unremarkable until

he joined the RAAF. Seconded to the RAF in

late 1937, he was shot down during the war

under horrific conditions and subsequently

endured four years in POW camps. Whilst

there, he taught himself to draw and paint,

skills he furthered on release through study

at the Chelsea School of Arts under such

luminaries as Henry Moore and Ceri Rich-

ards. Returning to Western Australia with his

wife Helen in 1947, he set himself the task of

translating his local landscape through the

prism of the ‘school of Paris’, as exempli-

fied by Cezanne, Matisse and the Fauves. His

paintings and drawings from the 1950s are

glorious works, full of incident and analysis.

They are also works in progress and it is pos-

sible to follow his trajectory as he interro-

gates his own talents through a variety of sty-

listic challenges. In the mid-50s, he returned

to England to study fresco-making, whilst

Helen explored textile design. Inevitably,

both practices then informed his paintings as

his imagery and technique became increas-

ingly pared back to the elemental structures

and ‘life force’ of his subjects.

Re-introduced to the reductive approach of

the Russian Nicolas de Staël, Grey-Smith’s

paintings from the 1960s-on feature great

swathes of impasto colour applied with six-

inch scrapers which capture every trace of

the artist’s progress. Under-colours peep out

in vivid contrast to the monolithic slabs of

paint which pile over the top, bulked up by

his own handmade wax medium. An invet-

erate traveler, Grey-Smith would take the

family on annual camping expeditions into

the Murchison, South-West and, most nota-

bly, the Pilbara regions of Western Australia.

Like Nolan’s central Australia paintings from

the late 1940s, Grey-Smith’s paintings were

a revelation to local audiences, often form-

ing their first encounters with these remote

regions. Trees & karri forests in particu-

lar were deeply loved by the artist with the

bushlands surrounding his homes in the hills

outside Perth, and later in Pemberton in the

state’s south-west, providing rich sources of

inspiration. His critically acclaimed art was

highly popular and examples may now be

found in every major institutional and Uni-

versity art collection in Australia. He exhib-

ited in every state with gallerists of the cali-

bre of Rudy Komon and Ann Lewis, as well

as participating in landmark international

exhibitions such as Recent Australian Paint-

ing held at London’s Whitechapel Gallery in

1961. Honored with a touring Retrospective

in 1976, Grey-Smith was an early member of

the Visual Arts Board (now Australia Coun-

cil), President of the WA Contemporary Art

Society, founder of Modernist Collective The

Perth Group, was a vociferous advocate of

younger artists and, shortly before his death,

received Queen’s Honours. It was an intense

and diversely creative career.

Andrew Gaynor, author of the new mono-

graph, is a Melbourne-based curator and

researcher who spent many years in Perth

where he held positions at the Art Gallery

of Western Australia and the Perth Institute

of Contemporary Arts. In 2006, he curated

Guy Grey-Smith: a survey at the McClelland

Gallery+Sculpture Park in Victoria, a show

particularly appreciated by Helen Grey-

Smith, then aged 89. In 2009, she and her son

Mark offered Gaynor the first ever access

to Guy’s wartime drawings, his diaries and

archives and the monograph is the result.

Sadly, Helen Grey-Smith died a mere three

months after the project commenced.

She would, however, be delighted with the

result and that the last decade has seen a

steady increase in value for her husband’s

work on the secondary market. In fact, it

is rare that a work offered at auction ever

gets passed in, such is the demand for his

distinctive paintings and prints. For collec-

tors, the publication of Guy Grey-Smith: Life

Force will serve as an excellent aid to their

research, crammed as it is with biographical

details, images, exhibitions lists and bibliog-

raphy. An index is also available for down-

load from the UWAP website.
