JOHN D’AGATA

NATIONAL HEAD OF JEWELLERY

& SYDNEY OFFICE

To say that the Sydney office just happened

would be a lie. It did start with a revelation,

however. In 2013, Managing Director John

Albrecht urged me to take my Fine Jewellery

Auction to Sydney for viewing. We already

had a great following, so why not treat our

existing clients to all of the fabulous jewellery

range in person. The result was incredible.

Not only was the viewing an outstanding suc-

cess, but we began to receive enquiries across

all categories from both buyers and vendors.

This was when the concept first came into

my mind. Why was it that an established auc-

tion house like Leonard Joel did not have a

presence in our most international city up to

that point? Ok, so this is how the story goes; I

went back to my hotel room, poured myself a

double whisky and got on the phone to John

Albrecht. It was decided then and there that

we would start looking for premises in Syd-

ney. Our current office at 39 Queen Street,

Woollahra jumped out at us immediately.

Two or more years on and the rest is history.

We are now coming up to auction number

five and have established ourselves within

the Sydney landscape. There’s definitely no

looking back now.

A JEWEL DISCOVEREDIN SYDNEYSydney has always been a generous market

for jewellery. With such a rich history, it’s

no wonder that so many wonderful pieces

are found there. Probably not the first item

that was consigned, but one of the most

memorable, was an exquisite antique locket

by Harry Emanuel, London. The locket

was finely crafted with applied bird and

nest motif; details such as seed pearls were

used to represent eggs and the piece was

finished off with the most beautiful spray

of blue enamelled flowers. At the time the

locket was presented in a Melbourne auc-

tion, as we had not begun our ‘Jewels and

Objets D’Art’ Sydney Auction series at that

time. I’ll never forget the price, $6,710 IBP;

more than triple the low estimate. This was

one of many items that have now been con-

signed and I’m happy to say that they are

all now offered to our discerning buyers in

Sydney.

Now coNSigNiNg for JEwELS AUcTioN 14 SEPTEMBEr 2015

On a wintery Monday evening at Leon-

ard Joel, our Jewels auction of almost 400

items enjoyed a full house and numerous

new faces keen to secure one of the larg-

est diamond offerings in recent auction

memory. The star catalogue cover piece, lot

215, a rare fancy yellow oval cut diamond

rivière, stunned the audience when it sold

to an absentee bidder for $195,200 (inc BP).

Likewise, a delicate rivière in alternating

sapphires and diamonds, lot 87, realised

$13,420 (inc BP). The appetite for “charac-

ter” jewellery was also evident with bidders

focusing their attention on signature pieces.

One such example was the vintage Cartier

panther brooch, lot 152, that more than

quadrupled its estimate to sell for $3,660

(inc BP). The audience were also unde-

terred by the very formal and lavish nature

of much of the collection and this was no

more evident than when lot 157, a lavish

pear-shaped emerald and diamond pen-

dant necklace, came up for sale. With more

than 24 carats of emeralds and diamonds, it

sold for $21,960 (inc BP). Emerald shoppers

were clearly out in force when an equally

impressive Art Deco design pair of emer-

ald and diamond earrings, lot 198, sold for a

staggering $36,000 (inc BP). Similarly lavish

was a cocktail ring by Bulgari with a large

and rare prasiolite stone which realised

$3,400 plus BP. Signed jewellery by design

houses did particularly well throughout the

auction, confirming that this jewellery cat-

egory is well supported by a secondary mar-

ket more and more attune to its investment

quality. Love and investment were in mind

when an impressive 9.01ct solitaire ring was

snapped up for $164,700. The investment

nature of jewellery was in full play when a

modestly estimated diamond bracelet con-

taining nine “D” colour centre stones went

under the hammer. With perfectly coloured

stones, numerous bidders saw keen to

secure it as much for diamond quality as for

aesthetics. It finally sold for more than six

times its estimate at $15,000 plus BP.

Gold jewellery of both Victorian and more

recent origin was not overlooked amongst

the frenzy for diamond and signed jewel-

lery. In fact, it was refreshing to observe

high quality period pieces selling well. Two

examples were a complexly designed pair

of Etruscan gold and coral earnings, lot

126, which realised $3,172 (inc BP) and a

very playful brooch and earring suite of late

period Art Deco jewellery, lot 283-284, that

realised $5,977 (inc BP). The playful theme

continued late in the sale with lot 298, a

Chanel J12 ladies wristwatch, selling for

$6,710 (inc BP). The Jewels auction realised

a Leonard Joel record 1.2 Million dollars,

confirming this category as one of the most

coveted collecting categories at public auc-

tion, both here and internationally.

SOPHIE ULLIN HEAD OF FINE ARTArt took sophie ullin by stealth. growing up in a family with a history of art collecting and dealing, she was initially oblivious to the

charms and challenges of this fascinating realm, intent instead on pursuing advertising. An honors degree in Fine Art awoke her

passion and a career began that has spanned 18 years.

sophie’s expertise in art valuation, research, market analysis and sales is built upon her professional experience at a fine art dealership,

as an art specialist at Deutscher-Menzies, Melbourne , Head of Contemporary, Aboriginal and tribal Art at Lawson Menzies, sydney

and now as Head of Fine Art at Leonard Joel. Over a decade ago, she established her own art advisory business focusing both on

Aboriginal and Contemporary art. she is one of the founders of the Art Consulting Association of Australia and is an approved

Australian government Valuer for the Cultural gifts bequest program.

Recent research by Ms ullin was recognized as breaking new ground in her contextualisation of a collection of extremely rare and

important early Queensland transitional Boomerangs and Club. she discovered that they probably pre-dated the best known

examples of this culturally significant period within Australia’s history. the artefacts sold for record prices and are now in the collection

of Museum Victoria.

EXTRAORDINARY DISCOVERIES

JewelleryA Rare Panthère cuff by Cartier – I’ll always remember consigning this piece.

It was a year in the making. It came from a private collection in Israel and was

a very sentimental piece to the vendor. After much negotiation it was eventually

sold in our very first auction for $41,480 IBP – John D’Agata National Head of

Jewellery and Sydney office

Decorative ArtsEmile Antoine Bourdelle – Bronze Bust of Beethoven - A knock on the door

one morning in May resulted in an extraordinary find. Peering from under a

packing blanket, on the back of a van, was the imposing glare of Beethoven. It

took four members of staff to carry him into the gallery, luckily we all had our

porridge that morning! Robert Williams Specialist Jewels, Objets D’Art and

MY FIRsT YeaR

MY FIRST YEARIt has been an exhilarating year filled with thrilling finds which have been bolstered

with electrifying results. The Sydney and NSW market has presented many strong

key pieces this first year, helping to solidify the Australian auction market on the

global stage. The variety and rarity of Specialist Jewels, Objets D’Art & Single

Owner Collections uncovered has been very encouraging. The response to these

rare finds from national and international collectors has been supportive, proving

there is no longer a need for clients to contemplate shipping pieces oversees to

realise an auction record result. Our reach further expanded this year with Leonard

Joel’s forged association with Dreweatts & Bloomsbury UK, opening up a whole

new world of opportunities and expertise. I would like to take the opportunity

to thank all those that have supported us in this seminal year. We have enjoyed

working within the NSW and interstate communities and assisting our national and

international collectors. We look forward to new discoveries and the year ahead.

SINGLE OwNER COLLECTIONSLeonard Joel was honoured to have been

entrusted with the sale of The Dr. George Wil-

cox Collection. The late doctor’s distinguished

connoisseurship of fine clocks, furniture, silver

and decorative arts brought us a refined collec-

tion, with distinctly English flavours. A curatorial

journey shared with his wife Pam, when I asked

her the question, “was it just his collection,

yours, or collaborative?” She explained, “Oh

yes, it was totally collaborative, in so much as

George bought the antiques, and I always said

‘George, you can’t afford that!’”.

The furniture had led with an exceptional

George III Satinwood Bonheur Du Jour, attrib-

uted to George Simson. The feature clock of the

Wilcox Collection was a fine late Georgian musi-

cal automata clock by James Smith.

The ceramics led with a remarkable find; a fine

Barr Flight & Barr Worcester porcelain shell-dec-

orated marbled part dessert service, made for

the Gordon family, by John Barker. The service

was referred to in The Dictionary of Worcester

Porcelain, Volume I, 1751-1851, John Sandon,

pages 180-181, colour plate 76 and page 204.

John Sandon writes “A remarkable Barr, Flight &

Barr dessert service was made circa 1812 for the

Gordon family and was sold in Scotland in 1980

by Phillips from the estate of a descendant, the

Honourable Mrs. Jock Leith of Glenkindie Cas-

tle, Aberdeenshire. The centres of each piece

were painted with shells in the distinctive hand

which has been attributed to John Barker. The

marbled grounds were reserved with the family

crest within a neoclassical gold border.”

The collection continued with an enchanting

selection of Dr Wall Worcester, Derby, Minton

and other European porcelain manufacturers.

The catalogue ended with an eclectic collection

of silver; mostly sourced from the Silver Vaults in

London, spanning the entire Georgian periods,

George IV, William IV, Victorian and Edwardian

through to Elizabeth II.

COLONIAL SURPRISE wITh IMPRESSIONIST CURRENTSAt our Fine Art auction on tuesday evening

the audience was hushed as they observed

a series of small works, miniatures and

watercolours to be precise, of Australian

colonial origin realise a small fortune. Lots

24-29 comprised the Cox family collection,

most of which were traceable to the

Hon. Edward King Cox, MLC of Mulgoa.

the six works, collectively estimated at

$30,000, realised a staggering $96,624

IBP as the sheer historical importance of

the works was absorbed by the audience.

Cox was an important colonial era grazier

and livestock and racing breeder of

international renown and the six images

were in many ways rare snapshots of

the period. Of equal excitement was a

superb Heidelberg school painting by

Walter Withers. The Trysting Place, as it

was known, had remained undiscovered

for 125 years as it moved through

generations of the one family. unsigned,

it was viewed as a beautiful but not

particularly valuable painting. After

extensive research at Leonard Joel the

painting’s author, origin and history was

meticulously reconstructed until it was,

beyond doubt, confirmed as an important

and lost work from Australia’s most

famous school of artists, the Heidelberg

school. the painting finally transacted

for $80,000 IBP and is now recorded as

a recently discovered work by the artist.

the cherished toy collection of the late Richard Dawson (1947-2014) was something of a

transcontinental enterprise in its development – the foundations of the collection were

laid in his native Derbyshire, London and continued in Australia, where he emigrated

with his wife Mary, in 1981. Richard was known to have collected with an eye for

quality workmanship which reflected the precision synonymous with his profession as

an engineer: he acquired the best examples he could locate and edited his collection

to reflect his interests at any one time. Initially focusing his attention on Hornby Dublo

trains, Richard later expanded his collection to include Wrenn models, Dinky diecast

models and tinplate toys.

the Richard Dawson Collection will be offered as a single owner auction comprising

over 290 lots from 12pm in Melbourne on Wednesday 12th August. Viewing from

saturday 8th August 2015.

SCANDINAVIANAUCTION

V I N T A G E I N T E R I O R S

AUCTION THURSDAY 23 JULY AT 10AM

Leonard Joel are currently inviting submissions for the Vintage Interiors Scandinavian auction to be held this July. We are calling for entries covering the definitive regions such as Denmark, Norwary and Sweden. 20th century design furniture and fittings which compliment and enhance these Nordic regions.

This particular movement in design flourished throughout the 50s, and 60s and is syn-onymous with the technology and innovation driven post war period. Designers and cabinet makers such as Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen, and Verner Panton characterised this movement with their innovative and minimal designs, skilfully crafted veneers and cabinetry, as well as their revolutionary development of bent and moulded plywood.

Due to constant popularity of Scandinavian furniture, along with designers such as George Jensen and Bang and Olufsen this special thematic auction will once again of-fer an opportunity to own a variety of original and increasingly rare pieces.
