The city of the future is destined to be a complex system. Beyond the traditional functions that fall to buildings – hou-sing, protection and safety, hygiene and comfort, etc. – extraordinarily diverse forms of use and resources are now emerging, for example produ-cing energy, recycling and processing waste, creating social ties, providing shared services, and growing food. Demain, à quoi ressembleront nos villes ?

Depuis 2008, 50 % de la popu-lation mondiale vit désormais dans des villes, devenues pour certaines de véritables méga-poles : on en dénombre 36 de plus de 10 millions d’habitants à ce jour.En 2020, 80 % des Européens vivront dans des zones ur-baines. À l’horizon 2050, deux tiers des habitants de la planète, soit 70 %, seront citadins.2050, c’est demain.Si cette nouvelle densité s’im-pose comme un défi majeur à relever – comment réussir à bien vivre ensemble dans ces conditions ? – d’autres facteurs ont une influence directe sur ce système très complexe qu’est la ville.

Mais surtout les liens à tisser et à réinventer entre elle et nous. Par-dessus tout, les liens entre nous.

Vers de nouveaux urbanismes

Face à cette nouvelle donne, les réponses sont multiples. Depuis quelques années déjà, beau-coup imaginent une ville intel-ligente et interactive – une ville « connectée » ou smart city –.Tout converge vers une ville ré-solument plus « durable », dont les composantes économiques, sociales et écologiques seraient harmonieusement associées autour d’objectifs clé : sobriété dans l’utilisation des ressources, des citoyens-usagers au cœur des dispositifs, une approche systémique de la ville.

Reinventing architecture

It seems to be an accepted fact that the architecture of the future will be a perfect balance between engineering developed by Man and the wealth of science and ingenuity that Nature has to offer. Building Information Modelling (BIM) has already started to revolutio-nise the way that construction is plan-ned, designed, created and managed. From now on, designing the buildings of the future looks set to be a daunting task as much as an exciting challenge.

La ville de demain propose non plus une lecture verticale mais horizontale et décloisonnée de son urbanisme. En véritable « écosystème », cette ville nou-velle a vocation à s’adapter selon l’endroit du globe où elle se développe, différences de conditions climatiques obligent. Des contraintes que l’architec-ture se doit elle aussi d’intégrer, pour le citoyen-usager.Par ailleurs le règne du « co » est annoncé : collaboration, coopération, cocréation, com-munauté, soutenu par des formes innovantes de concer-tation et de conception de la ville incluant l’ensemble des parties prenantes.

Il semble acquis que l’architec-ture du futur sera au carrefour du juste équilibre entre l’ingé-nierie développée par l’homme et toute la science et l’ingé-niosité de la nature, La modé-lisation des données du bâti-ment (BIM) a déjà commencé à révolutionner la façon dont la construction est planifiée, conçue, créée et gérée. Dès lors, concevoir les bâtiments de demain s’annonce à la fois comme une véritable gageure autant qu’un défi enthousias-mant.

Carlos MorenoChantre de la smart city, scientifique humaniste, Car-los Moreno est Professeur des Universités, conseiller scientifique du Président de COFELY INEO, filiale de ENGIE (ex GDF SUEZ), et Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur. Dès 2006, il investit le champ de réflexion sur la ville avec son concept de « ville numé-rique et durable » : une plate-forme « citizen-centric », intégrant les solutions nécessaires à sa pérennité et les services requis pour le bien-être de ses habitants. Une vision systémique, créatrice de valeur.

Champion of the smart city, the scientist and humanist Carlos Mo-reno is a University Professor, scientific advisor to the President of COFELY INEO, a subsidiary of ENGIE (formerly GDF SUEZ) and hol-der of the prestigious Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur award. Since 2006, his efforts have gone into the field of reflexion on the city with his “digital and sustainable city” concept: a “ci-tizencentric” platform, integrating the solutions that are necessary to its longevity and the services required for the well-being of its inhabitants. Réflexions sur le phénomène urbain du xxie siècle

Qu’est-ce qu’une ville ? Sys-tème complexe, composé d’éléments hétérogènes qui doivent être pensés ensemble dans leur transversalité, la ville est avant tout un phénomène humain, que l’on ne saurait réduire à ses composantes techniques et technologiques. Il n’en demeure pas moins que les révolutions technologiques qui bouleversent aujourd’hui notre monde – et en premier lieu

la révolution numérique – vont transformer et transforment déjà en profondeur les espaces urbains, en créant de nouveaux services et usages par un phé-nomène inédit d’hybridation entre mondes physique et nu-mérique. La ville de demain, loin d’être simplement un espace où tout sera régi par la technolo-gie connectée, sera un territoire où les citoyens construisent ensemble, à chaque instant, les services et les usages qui répondent à leur besoins fon-damentaux et à leur quête de bien-être.

Reflexions on the urban phenomenon of the 21st century

What is a city?A complex system, made up of hete-rogeneous elements that must be considered as an ensemble with cross-functional purposes, the city is above all a human phenomenon that cannot be reduced to its technical and techno-logical components. Nevertheless, the technical revolu-tions that are drastically changing our world today – with the digital revolu-tion taking the lead – will extensively

transform and are already transforming urban areas, creating new services and uses through the original phenomenon of forming hybrids between the physi-cal and digital worlds. The city of the future, far from being a simple space where everything will be controlled by connected technology, will be a place where citizens will be continuously constructing the services and uses that meet their essential needs and fulfil their quest for well-being, together.

What will our cities look like on the future?

Since 2008, 50% of the world’s popu-lation has lived in cities, some of which have become true megalopolises: there are currently 36 cities with over 10 million inhabitants.In 2020, 80% of Europeans will live in urban areas. A fresh look at urban planning

There are many ways of responding to this new requirement. For several years now already, many have been imagining an intelligent and interactive city – a “connected” or “smart” city.Everything is moving towards a reso-lutely more “sustainable” city, where economic, social and ecological compo-nents will be harmoniously brought to-gether around key goals: restrained use of resources, placing citizens/users at the heart of new measures, and imple-menting a systemic approach to the city.
