Physical Description The duck billed platypus is shaped as if pieced together from
several different animals. Its nostrils are at the end of its beak, which is a dark gray color, and allows the platypus to breathe while also having most of its body underwater. The importance of the bill is not simply for looking interesting, it actually serves a very important purpose in the platypus’s diet. Underwater, without the use of its eyes, ears, or nostrils, the platypus’s bill works as an electro-receptor system and has approximately 850,000 receptors. While underwater, the platypus can detect electric currents given off by activity from its prey, thereby locating it.
Breeding Info About 22 million ducks are raised annually in
the United States. Ducks are raised primarily for meat. Many farms still raise a few ducks primarily
for family use or local sale.
