Activity- 5 minutes

You will be given 5 minutes to go around the room and write down as much as you can about the words:“Diet, Food, Meal and snack” (Stretch and Whitehouse, 2010)

Page 7: Lesson 1 nutritional health

Food

Food can be defined as “any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink or that plants absorb in order to maintain life and growth.”(Stretch and Whitehouse, 2010)

Page 8: Lesson 1 nutritional health

Food

There are different food groups you can identify these food groups by using the food pyramid.

Page 9: Lesson 1 nutritional health

“The food and drink that a person or animal regularly consumes.”(Stretch and Whitehouse, 2010)

Remember a diet does not mean to lose weight. There are diets to lose weight, they are diets to gain weight, diets to eat healthy and balanced diets. (Stretch and Whitehouse, 2010)

DIET

Page 10: Lesson 1 nutritional health

MealsA meal contains a range of different

“Food served and eaten on regular occasions, it can be during the day, for

breakfast, lunch and supper.” (NHS, 2010)

Page 11: Lesson 1 nutritional health

Snacks

Malnutrition Malnutrition is a serious condition that

can lead to a variety of medical problems.

It occurs when a person's diet does not

contain the right amount of nutrients

over a long period of time. (NHS, 2013)

Page 16: Lesson 1 nutritional health

Malnutrition It can either be from a lack of one nutrient or a

combination of nutrients. It can also occur from

over eating.

Page 17: Lesson 1 nutritional health

14% of people over the age of 65 are malnourished – How many over 65 year olds are not?

People over the age of 70 living on their own are undernourished with a ratio of

8: 2 - What is the simplified ratio?

35% of elderly living in a care homes are malnourished- How many in care homes are not effected?

2. Pick one country/ continent showing the highest percentage of people undernourished.

3. State why you think that specific country/ continent has the highest percentage of people undernourished.

Malnutrition “Malnutrition is a serious condition that occurs when a person’s

diet does not contain the right amount of nutrients”.

It means "poor nutrition" and can refer to:

• under nutrition – when you don't get enough nutrients

• over nutrition – when you get more nutrients than you need.

Page 22: Lesson 1 nutritional health

Effects of Malnutrition

Fatigue Weight loss

Poor eyesightLack of concentration

Skin issues

Page 23: Lesson 1 nutritional health

• Diet normal• Food not

digested or absorbed

• Diarrhea• Parasites

Secondary Malnutrition

Page 24: Lesson 1 nutritional health

In terms of nutrition it is “the lack of one or more nutrient.”(NHS, 2010)This deficiency can lead to health problems.

Deficiency

Page 25: Lesson 1 nutritional health

Under-nutrition is a deficiency of energy or nutrients.

Under nutrition A lack of calories or of one or more essential nutrients.

Under nutrition is a form of malnutrition.

points you have learnt from last

lesson

Page 32: Lesson 1 nutritional health

Activity- 25 minutes You are a nurse and you are wanting to make a game that will inform students on either malnutrition, underweight or deficiency as 1 in 6 children are deficient in one or more nutrients. You have decided to make it into a game to make it fun for students to access and learn in lessons and at home. The game will include the following: Definitions, what it is?, why it occurs?, Symptoms, statistics and how to prevent it. You can include hand outs for extra information. Compete for the best game!!
