The Story: Kingdom Quest 4-5-K Lesson #17 - 3

Pre-Session Singing (10 minutes) Purpose: When all children are in one group singing, it is easy for children arriving later to join the group and immediately get involved.

Large Group Opening (15 minutes)

Purpose: The puppet demonstrates today’s lesson. The children are introduced to the take home point and experience the Bible event.

Puppet Presentation Supplies:

• Bubba puppet holding a “messy” pot made of clay; Presenter: Boys and girls, let’s call Bubba. (Children call “Bubba”.)

Bubba: Hi everyone! (Bubba says sadly.) Presenter: Bubba, Bubba why are you so sad again this week.

Bubba: Look, look at this pot I tried to make in art class. I worked really hard and took my time on it but then I didn’t let it harden long enough before I played with it. Now it is a weird shape and my teacher was upset that I didn’t listen to directions. Plus, I wanted it to be perfect so I could give it to my mom.

Presenter: Well Bubba I think it looks very creative. I think that the only thing

wrong is that you didn’t listen to your teacher. It looks like you spent a lot of time on it and I am sure that your mom is going to love it.

Bubba: But now I think my teacher is mad at me and I don’t think that my mom is going to want this pot.

Presenter: Well Bubba I think it looks like you put a lot of love and attention into

that pot and I think your mom is going to love it no matter what.

Bubba: But what about my teacher. She is still going to be mad at me for not listening.

Presenter: I think your teacher might surprise you. I don’t think she will even

mention your pot tomorrow at school.

Bubba: You don’t? Presenter: No, she may remind you to listen when giving you directions, but I

am sure your mistake is forgiven.

The Story: Kingdom Quest 4-5-K Lesson #17 - 4

Bubba: You really think it is forgiven? Presenter: Yes, and do you know what?

Bubba: What? Presenter: This reminds me of today’s Bible event.

Bubba: The people didn’t listen to their teachers and they made pots for their moms in the Bible?

Presenter: No, our Bible event today is about God’s Prophet Jeremiah. God

came to Jeremiah and told him that people were still not listening to him and that He wanted Jeremiah to go tell them to start obeying God.

Bubba: They still weren’t listening to and obeying God? Presenter: No and they still would not listen to Jeremiah either. God reminded

Jeremiah that He would have to punish those individuals that were not listening but that God would always love his people.

Bubba: Always? Presenter: God will always love us even when we do wrong.

Bubba: Even when we don’t listen to our teachers? Presenter: Even when you don’t listen to your teacher. Would you like to learn

more about this Bible event? Bubba: Yes I would. Presenter: First, let’s practice the take home point. I’ll say the first part and you

say the second part. Bubba: OK. Presenter: *GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DID

WRONG...now you say, “God always loves me!” Bubba: God always loves me! Presenter: Do you think you can teach the boys and girls? Bubba: You bet I can. Presenter: Okay everybody, *GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN

THEY DID WRONG…

Bible Event: God’s Prophets Supplies: The Story for Little Ones

Read chapter 17: God’s Prophets of The Story for Little Ones, (This will bring the book and the story to life again. It will refocus the children on the book, The Story and get them excited about reading it again.) Have clay with you and close by. While reading (“God told Jeremiah to go to a potter’s house. The potter was making a pot out of clay but it did not look good.”) make a messy pot. Boys and Girls, see how this pot looks messy. See how it will not hold much, things would fall out of it and it looks lumpy. Re-ball the clay while reading (“The potter used the same ball of clay and started over again. God told Jeremiah, “My people are like that clay pot. They are not good now, but I will help them be better.”). Continue the story and make sure to emphasize that God will always love the children. Finish story and follow-up with: Even though God’s people would not listen to Jeremiah, He always loved his people. He would have to punish them if they continued to do wrong but He would always love his people even when they did wrong. God will always love each and every one of you. Even when you do wrong things. He will always love you and he will always be there. God loved us so much, that he had a plan to take away our sin. God sent his Son, Jesus, into the world to live and die for us so that we can be forgiven. Jesus takes away our sins. When we love Jesus and ask him to forgive us, Jesus makes us a new creation in heaven—free from sin. We still do things wrong but we are forgiven. We are special because Jesus made us new and forgiven! Next week, we will learn about Daniel and asking God for help. Make sure to read your story with your parents. I cannot wait to see what happens next.

Boys and girls, let’s practice the take home point together. I will say the first part and you repeat the last part. *GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DID WRONG...God always loves me!

Let’s fold our hands and pray. Repeat after me. Dear God, We love you. You always love us. Thank you for sending Jesus. So that even when we do wrong, We can be forgiven. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Song: Let’s sing our song of the week. (To the tune of Frere Jaques) Capitalized letters indicate emphasis on that syllable when the rhyme is sung.

GOD loves ME-ee. GOD loves ME-ee. YES He DOES. YES He DOES. He WILL always LOVE me. He WILL always LOVE me. YES He WILL. YES He WILL.

Small Group Application (30 minutes)

Purpose: Children will break into small groups. Smaller groups enable children to develop closer relationships with adults and peers in the church. In your small groups you will reinforce the take home point with a fun hands-on activity and discuss the Bible event. Review questions help kids apply the take home point to their daily lives.

Activity 1: Craft “God Always Loves Me” Supplies: Copies of Appendix A on cardstock; markers or crayons; Sticker that says:

GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DID WRONG…God always loves me!

Boys and girls today you are going to connect a dot-to-dot to make a heart. Before finishing the dot-to-dot think about what you think it will look like. Some will have straight lines, some will have curved lines, some lines will be messy and some will be neat. Just like the pottery in our story, your drawings will be unique just like you are unique. When you are finished connecting your dots I want you to color your heart with your favorite design. Next we will place the sticker in the middle that says: GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DID WRONG…God always loves me! Review the Bible Event.

How did the pot look in the potter’s shop when Jeremiah first saw the potter? (Messy, not good in the eyes of God.) Did the potter keep that pot? (No. He rolled the clay back into a ball and made a new pot.)

Let’s practice the take home point. *GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DID WRONG…God always loves me!

Activity 2: Snack “Twisted Pottery” Supplies: napkins, cups, water or juice; pull apart licorice

Before we eat our snack, let’s fold our hands and pray. Repeat after me. Dear God, We love you. You always love us. Thank you for sending Jesus. So that even when we do wrong, We can be forgiven. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In Jesus’ name.

Amen.

Boys and Girls, today we are going to make a pottery snack. We are going to take this sticky licorice, pull it apart and coil it into a pot. You can use one strand or you can use more than one strand to build your pot. Before you eat it try it different ways and see how neat of a pot you can build. Now you may eat your pot.

Review the Bible event. Was sticky, coiled pot neat or messy? (Children will have different ideas. Have them describe their pot.) Does God love us when we do wrong? (Yes, God always loves us.) Even when we are messy and not perfect? (Yes, God always loves us.)

Let’s practice the take home point. *GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DID WRONG…God always loves me!

***CAUTION: Be aware of food allergies children may have, before you give them anything to eat.

GOD loves ME-ee. GOD loves ME-ee. YES He DOES. YES He DOES. He WILL always LOVE me. He WILL always LOVE me. YES He WILL. YES He WILL.

Activity 3: Game “God Molds Me” Supplies: Clay or Play-Doh Boys and girls, today we are going to take clay or Play-Doh and mold it into pots like the potter in the story. First I want you to make a messy pot. A pot that is oddly shaped and looks different. See how that pot looks? It looks like we look to God when we do wrong, messy. Now I want you to take your clay or Play-Doh and roll it into a ball. I want you to slowly push in the middle with your finger. Little push, by little push I want you to make the best pot you can. Now that is what we look like when we listen to God and follow God. Review the Bible event.

Who did God send to talk to his people about the wrong things they were doing? (Jeremiah) Did God’s people listen to Jeremiah? (No, they still didn’t listen.) Did God love his people? (ALWAYS!!!)

Let’s practice the take home point.*GOD ALWAYS LOVED HIS PEOPLE EVEN WHEN THEY DID WRONG…God always loves me! Let’s fold our hands and pray. Repeat after me.

Dear God, We love you. You always love us. Thank you for sending Jesus. So that even when we do wrong, We can be forgiven. Thank you, thank you, thank you. In Jesus’ name.

The front of this card will remind you that God has plans for us. Show your parents the back and tell them that God has plans for them too. You can use this card to tell your parents about what you learned today in Sunday School.

Have kids practice saying the Take Home Point as they look at their cards.

Goodbye boys and girls. Remember that God made you and he loves you!
