Teen Sentenced to Prison for Texting-While-Driving Death

Harsh punishment is warning to others not to text and drive.

Published: June 11th, 2012 Massachusetts teenager was sentenced this week to two years in prison and loss of his license for 15 years after being convicted of motor vehicle homicide. Aaron Deveau, 18, is the first driver in the state to face such charges. On February 20, 2011, Deveau was driving and his vehicle swerved across the center line, crashing head on into Daniel Bowley's truck, causing life-ending injuries.

President Obama has recently signed an executive order banning government employees from texting while driving government  vehicles or while operating privately owned vehicles while on official business. According to Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood, this ban is another step in the path to imposing stricter regulations on the use of mobile phones and other electronic devices while driving.

The impossible texting & driving test

If there’s any lingering question as to why cell phones and driving should never be used in combination, the picture above should clear it up pretty quick.Between the bus and the big rig is what’s left of a pickup, which was being driven by a 19-year-old kid. Just prior to slamming into the semi, the young driver had sent or received 11 text messages in as many minutes. Just after the collision, two school busses joined the chain reaction, killing a 15-year-old student. The texting driver also died. Two tragic losses that defy rationalization.

According to a 2009 Pew Internet Study:•One in three (34%) texting teens ages 16-17 say they have texted while driving. That translates into 26% of all American teens ages 16-17;•Half (52%) of cell-owning teens ages 16-17 say they have talked on a cell phone while driving. That translates into 43% of all American teens ages 16-17;•48% of all teens ages 12-17 say they have been in a car when the driver was texting;•40% say they have been in a car when the driver used a cell phone in a way that put themselves or others in danger.
