Lesson 27 – Cell Structures

• Click here to view an animation on cell structures & functions.

• Review the vocabulary in this lesson.• OGT Skills Checklist - At the end of this lesson,

you should be able to answer the following questions:– What is the difference between prokaryotes and

eukaryotes?– What cell structures make up a cell and what are their

functions?– What are the differences between plant and animal

cells?

Nucleus

• Part of the cell that contains DNA & RNA.• Controls cell’s growth & reproduction.

5

DNA

• Deoxyribonucleic acid.• Contains the instructions needed to make proteins

that perform important functions for an organism (examples: develop, survive and reproduce).

6

RNA

• Ribonucleic acid.• Carries the genetic instructions from DNA in

nucleus to cytoplasm where proteins are made.

Cell Membrane(Plasma Membrane)

• Surrounds the cell. • Controls what can come into or leave the cell.

Cytoplasm

• Fluid that fills the cell.

Mitochondria

• Provides cell with energy.

Golgi Apparatus

• Membrane bound organelle that packages and secretes (releases) products.
