Plenary (10 minutes)
Unlike those living under Nazi occupationwe live in a free, democratic society andso cannot really appreciate why individualsmay have made the choices they did.
However, many individuals chose tobecome bystanders/perpetrators evenwhen other options may have been opento them. Is it right to make suchjudgements?
Look at the next slide..................

What was really in the photo?
These women were Hellferinnen (helpers).
They were typists, telegraph clerks andsecretaries of Auschwitz. They were on an
excursion to a recreation centre just outside thecamps borders. It was summer 1944 and bythen nearly 1 million people had been murderedat the place where they worked.
Just like the victims, these were ordinarypeople , but unlike the victims they couldmake a choice.
