"like" v. "enjoy"The verbs "like" and "enjoy" have the same meaning. However, "enjoy" cannot be followed by the infinitive. Also, "enjoy" is mostly used for things that can be experienced.

WAYS & WORDSExpressing preferences with " would rather"The expression "would rather" (usually contracted to " ~'d rather") is also used to express preference. However, "rather" is an adverb, not a verb. Therefore, it must be used with a verb.

• I'd rather eat than sleep.

I'd rather eating than sleeping.

"Would rather" can be used to compare two verbs or different objects of the same verb.

I'd ratherplay

tennis than[play] volleyball.

If the verb is the same, it does not need to be repeated:

• I'd rather play tennis than volleyball.

If the object is the same, a pronoun can be used:

• I'd rather play tennis than watch it.
