The First Commandment

You shall have no other gods.

What does this mean?

We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things.

1. How does God want us to treat him?

Glory: Honor or praise given to someone

1. How does God want us to treat him?

God wants us to give him GLORY.

Psalm 130:3-4 If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand? 4 But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.

Fear: To treat God with reverence and awe

1. How does God want us to treat him?

God wants us to give him glory.

That means: he wants us to fear (revere or respect) him above all things,

Love: To be devoted to someone, to live for them

Trust: To depend on someone, to have confidence in their promises

1. How does God want us to treat him?

God wants us to give him glory.

That means: he wants us to fear (revere or respect) him above all things,

to love him more than anything,

to trust him more than anything else.

2. How do we break this commandment?

Exodus 20:4-5 You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me,

Idol: A false god/anything or anyone who takes God’s place in our hearts

Idolatry: Worshipping any false god.

We break this commandment if we worship an idol or belong to a false religion.

Open idolatry: Worshipping a false god or not worshipping the entire Trinity

2. How do we break this commandment?

We break this commandment if we worship an idol or belong to a false religion.

We break this commandment if we don’t worship the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as God.

Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.

Secret idolatry: Loving or trusting something or someone more than we love or trust God

We break this commandment if we worship an idol or belong to a false religion.

We break this commandment if we don’t worship the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as God. We break this commandment if we love or trust something or someone more than we love or trust God.

3. Have we ever broken this commandment?

1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.

Yes, we have broken this commandment. We have loved and trusted other things more than God.

Yes, we have broken this commandment. We have loved and trusted other things more than God. But Jesus kept it perfectly for us and he died to pay for our sins. God has forgiven us.

Yes, we have broken this commandment. We have loved and trusted other things more than God. But Jesus kept it perfectly for us and he died to pay for our sins. God has forgiven us. Now God calls us to fear, love and trust in him above all things.
