Sedimentary Rock Formation Lab

Introduction

• Sedimentary rocks form in layers.

• The oldest layers are on the bottom and the youngest layers are on the top.

• This is called the Law of Superposition.

• Scientists use this law as a basic way to tell the age of rocks.

Directions

1. Lay a piece of gram cracker on the bottom.2. Then put a layer of chocolate peanut butter over the gram cracker.3. Then add a piece of bread. Cut the bread with a plastic knife the

same size as the gram cracker. Be careful that you don’t break the knife.

4. Add a layer of jam on top of the bread.5. Add another piece of bread on top of the gram cracker. Again, cut

the bread the size of the gram cracker with your plastic knife.6. Add a layer of regular peanut butter on top of the bread.7. Lastly, put another gram crack on the top of the sediment layers.8. Try to break the layers that you made.
