Testing program for PC's performance: WinBench

WinBench is a subsystem-level benchmark that measures the performance of a PC's graphics, disk, processor, video, and CD-ROM subsystems in a Windows-based environment. WinBench's tests are all 32-bit, and so can only run on Windows 9 Windows 98 and Windows NT systems.

WinBench returns the following main results that provide an overview of a PC's graphics, disk, processor, and CD-ROM subsystems performance: . Business Graphics WinMark and Business Disk WinMark . High-End Graphics WinMark and High-End Disk WinMark . CPUmarkl6 . CPUmark32 . CD-ROM WinMark


WinBench

The requirements for running the High-End tests are different than those for the Business tests. For more information, look up the reading materials for "WinBench: Minimum requirements & WinBench 99's enhancement". The Business tests measure your PC's disk and graphics subsystem performance as they perform work on popular, everyday business applications such as Paradox or PowerPoint.


WinBench

The High-End tests measure your PC's disk, graphics, and processor performance as they apply to demanding work styles and specialized applications, such as image editing, 3D visualization, and application development.

WinBench stores some of its essential information in the Windows registry, as well as in. INI files. Needless to say, using REGEDIT on any of this information could damage WinBench's ability to safely run its tests.


Compression software: WinZip

Have you ever used the Internet? If so, you've probably encountered ZIP files. Are you a Windows user? If so, WinZip is the way to handle these archived files. What is a ZIP file, anyhow? ZIP files are "archives" used for distributing and storing files. ZIP files contain one or more files. Usually the files "archived" in a ZIP are compressed to save space. ZIP files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster. ZIP files save time and space, and make downloading software and transferring email attachments faster. WinZip brings the convenience of windows to the use of Zip files and other compression formats.


WinZip

WinZip is extremely easy to use! To open an archive simply click on an archive listed in the File Manager or Explorer, drag and drop an archive onto WinZip, or use the standard Open dialog box. You can also use the standard New dialog box to create an archive, then add some files to it, and these files will be compressed and stored in the archive. The main WinZip window features a list box with the names, sizes, and date/time stamps of all files in the open archive (Figure 8.1). This list can be scrolled and sorted on any field. A tool bar provides fast access to commonly used actions. Extensive context sensitive help is always available.


WinZip

Double clicking on a file in the main WinZip window has the same effect as double clicking in the File Manager or Explorer. First the file is extracted from the archive. Then, if the file is executable, it is run. Otherwise, the file is opened by the appropriate application (for example, Windows Write or WordPad for *.WRI files) based on standard Windows associations.


WinZip

Use the Make .EXE File entry in the Actions menu to convert the open archive to a self-extracting archive. Self-extracting archives have an extension of .EXE, and can be run as commands. When a self-extracting archive is run, the files in the archive are automatically extracted. This is convenient, because the end user does not need an unzip program (like WinZip) to extract files from these self-extracting archives.


File copying program: Ghost

Ghost is designed to minimize tile installation times for operating systems such as Win 95, Win NT and OS/2. This is particularly useful to organizations which have a large number of similarly configured workstations to install. For example, Ghost reduces the time to install a typical 300 MB Win 95 system from an hour with substantial operand input to about 5 minutes with no operand input required. With multi access packages, multiple workstations may be installed at the same time which further improves efficiency.


Ghost

Ghost is designed to be run under DOS and can be run from a DOS boot diskette. Although DOS-based, it can handle Win 95/Win NT long file names, NTFS partitions, OS/2 extended attributes and even OS/2 boot manager partitions.


Ghost

Ghost has two modes of operation-a simple, menu-driven user interface, and, to further aid automating the installation process, a batch mode.Prior to Win 95 there was little need for a utility like Ghost, as systems could be installed by simply using the DOS XCOPY command. Win 95 introduced long file names, XCOPY could no longer do the job-hence the need for a utility like Ghost.


Ghost

Not only is Ghost the fastest way to install Win 95, Win NT and OS/2, it has another handy use-it can make complete backups of disks. Making Ghost a perfect choice for disaster recovery operations. Ghost is essentially a disk and/or partition copying program. The entire contents of a disk may be copied from one disk to another, or they may be copied to a disk image file, and that image file can then be used as a template to create copies of the original disk. Ghost also allows these operations to be performed on the partitions of the disk, i.e., the contents of a partition can be copied to another partition, or selected partitions can be copied to an image file and that image file can be used as a template to create copies of the original partitions.
