Namaste is made of two words: [Namah + te]. Namaḥ means 'bow', 'obeisance', 'reverential salutation' or 'adoration' and te means 'to you'. Therefore, Namaste literally means "I bow to you". The other variations are phrases like "peace be with you" or phrases praising gods etc. which are used by people of faith, when saying hello. For example, in some regions people say "Jai Shri Krishna" or "Jai Ramji ki" as a greeting, in praise of the gods they worship. Urdu speakers tend to say "Salaam" for "Hello" as well.

English words like "Hello" and "Hi" don't have an exact equivalence in Hindi, because such informal short greetings don't exist culturally. So in fact these words have been adopted into India languages. Similarly, the culture of thanking people casually is new to India. For example, if someone passes you the salt at the table, traditionally we would not say "thank you" in Hindi for such a casual action, but today people use the English "Thank you" for all such occasions.

The Hindi language offers a lot of variation for making refusals, so rather than having standard sayings or phrases when you are turning something down, you can state it as delicately, as nicely and as charmingly as you want to, to avoid hurting someone's sentiments. In Hindi, negative statements are usually spoken in passive sentence structures. This helps show that you can't help the situation and maybe regret having to say no as well. This makes it easier to say no, without being rude. Apart from the language itself, people prefer to say they don't have something, rather than saying they don't want to give it. Saying the latter involves more explanation and politeness.
