Biblical Commentary

InvestigationThe book of Acts marks the second half of Luke’s story, the first half being the Gospel named for him. The early Churchactually circulated Luke/Acts as one book and only later separated [the book of the Acts] of the Apostles as a separate entity.[Luke] followed Peter and then Paul on their missionary journeys to reach the world for Jesus. Luke was a great observer, loved details, and told the stories of the expanding Church really well. The other title that scholars give this book is the Actsof The Holy Spirit. The story of the early Church is the story of the Holy Spirit using common people to achieve uncommonsuccess in ministry.

In these first two chapters of Acts, Jesus promised the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:4–9), and then the Spirit inhabited the earlyChristians in astonishing, powerful ways. The Holy Spirit was not new to those Jews who now followed Jesus. Jesus hadalready introduced the person of the Spirit in earlier conversations. But His role and His personhood as part of the Trinitywas new, exciting, and perplexing to them.

Here, just as in the beginning of His ministry when the Holy Spirit visually anointed Him, Jesus handed off the mission to Hisdisciples. It was their turn now. From here on, the works, signs, and miracles would be done through these people.

ImportanceThis passage teaches that The Holy Spirit is God and Empowerer. God’s Spirit is active in the Bible from its opening verses:“In the beginning, God created . . . and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters” Gen. 1:1–2).

These verses begin to reveal the empowering aspectof the Holy Spirit to all believers. In the Old Testament the Spirit came“on” people (leaders, prophets, kings) and moved them or empowered them to do great things—and then left. Now, Jesus

promised that the Spirit would inhabit the lives of His people, to empower them in and with Himself.

With the Spirit’s coming, we first see that The Church is God's Plan. The coming of the Holy Spirit is nothing less than thebirth of the Church, Jesus Christ’s Bride. The exciting chapter of God’s grace to the world explodes in these verses. God revsup to use us to change the world!

InterpretationActs 1:4–5 Acts picks up where [the Gospel of Luke] leaves off. Jesus appeared to His followers for 40 days. Jesus wasstaying with His disciples when He issued the mandate that they should remain in Jerusalem to await the promised “gift,”which was to be the Holy Spirit, and the empowerment that His presence would imply. The book of Acts reveals exactly thekind of power expressed from the Spirit and through the lives of His disciples.

In the Gospel of Mark 1:8, John the Baptist made the distinction between his baptism of water and Jesus’ impending baptismof the Spirit. Water was the baptism marking repentance. The baptism of the Spirit would be the mark and the seal ofsalvation, as He would be the indwelling presence of God in the life of the believer. Both are closely related in the conversionexperience. Now, Jesus made reference to John’s statement, stating that the day was near in which the promise of thebaptism of the Spirit was at hand. His reference was to the Day of Pentecost, on which the Holy Spirit would make Hisentrance into the lives of Jesus’ followers (Acts 2:1–4).

Acts 1:6–7 The disciples had finally grasped that Jesus had to die and conquer death. But now they had a nagging question:When Jesus returns to the right hand of God (2:33), what’s to do next on earth? So the disciples asked Jesus about restoringthe Kingdom of God to Israel at that point.

When references were made to the Kingdom of God, Jesus knew that His disciples did not yet understand. He knew what Hemeant—the spiritual rule of God in our lives. He also knew that the disciples were hearing what they wantedto hear. Sincethe days of King David, the Jews had hoped for a Messiah to rule an earthly kingdom. Even here, it was hard for Jesus’followers to discard their preconceived notions about the Messiah.

Jesus gently rebuked the disciples, re-channeling their thinking. In 1:7 He said literally, “It does not belong to you to know.”Some translate it, “That is not your concern.” This may also tell us something about those who spend so much time andenergy trying to predict the return of Christ—“It is not yours to know.” Always beware of a hunger for forbidden knowledge.

Acts 1:8 Jesus wanted His disciples to be concerned with their present task: To receive the power that God was sending inorder to enable them to reach the world with the gospel message. The disciples had been focused only on the restoration ofIsrael. Jesus was focused on the redemption of the world.

Just as Luke had written that Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit at the beginning of His earthly ministry (Luke 3:22) sothe disciples would now be anointed with the Holy Spirit. “You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5).

What were they to do with that power? “Be my (Jesus’) witnesses.” The word for witness is marturia—from which we havereceived the word martyr. In the early Church, a high honor from God was martyrdom. In many countries today where theChurch is growing the fastest, people are the most persecuted and even martyred—they are literally giving their all to be Hiswitnesses. God doesn’t call us to safety. He calls us to obedience. Such “power” enabled the apostles to turn the world upsidedown (Acts 17:6).

If we ask, “What is the sign of the Holy Spirit?” we receive many answers: The Holy Spirit speaks in tongues, in fire, in wind,in miracles, and power. But in this passage, Jesus revealed that the first sign of the Holy Spirit would be His empowering Hisfollowers to witness about Jesus in their lives. The Holy Spirit empowers us to obey Jesus. Many scholars teach that thisfulfills the promise of Isaiah 63:10. Just as the Jews had been commanded to be God’s witnesses in the book of Isaiah, sothese newly empowered disciples would be God’s witnesses. The disciples’ witnessing would proceed from Jerusalem (wherethey were) to Judea (their country) and Samaria (their enemy) to the uttermost parts of the world.

Jesus’ words formed the outline for the book of Acts. The risen Christ had commissioned His disciples. What was to followwould be amazing: the unleashing of the power of the risen Christ.

Acts 1:9 Just as the Son of God had come into the world in the flesh, He left the world in the flesh with the promise ofreturning again in the flesh (Acts 1:11). In the meantime, He would leave His Spirit who would be with us “always, to thevery end of the age” (Matt. 28:20).

Because we read that the disciples returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives (Acts 1:12), it is safe to assume that thiswas the mount of Jesus’ ascension. The “cloud” mentioned in verse 19 was likely figurative, indicating God’s magnificentglory.

Reverb StudyLesson: We Have the Power

Implications“You will be my witnesses . . .” (Acts 1:8). “You will be my martyrs.” God does not call us to safety. He calls us to obedience. The disciples had their own plans, but Jesus had another. Drawing back the curtains, He revealed an enormous picture of theplan and purpose of God, and the ultimate goal was the redemption of all humanity. This is an insurmountable task that onlyGod can accomplish. So why would He choose to use people instead of doing it all Himself? People are part of God’s glory(the revealing of Himself), and He chooses to use us as His vessels that carry Him within us in the form of His Spirit. God hasnot left us to carry out His mission without empowering us by His Spirit, who equips us daily for the task, working through us.The sooner we realize that we are not alone in this task, the better. The sooner we realize that the task is not safe, the better. The sooner we submit to the Spirit in obedience to His commands—His mission—the better.

You’re at the beginning of yet another important study. This one is significant because it points your students to a wide-openfrontier. Your students may be as full of questions about their future as the disciples were. You have an opportunity to be avessel of the Holy Spirit, teaching them the truth concerning the Spirit and His role in their lives and how valuable He is tothe task that they’ve been assigned to. Don’t hesitate to share just exactly how God-sized the mission is. But then don’thesitate to help your students realize the greatness of our God through His Spirit, who enables us to accomplish everythingthat He has laid out before us.

Teaching Plan: Connect ActivitiesAll activity sheets are at the end of this printable lesson

Drama: Pep Talk(5–10 minutes, easy set-up)Download the drama script. Prior to the session, enlist six students to enact the drama. Give copies of the script to castmembers ahead of time so that they will be ready to perform it.

Prompt students to perform the drama. Afterward, ask: How would you feel if your coach announced that he was upand leaving right before a game? What would you do? Allow students to respond. Then observe that Jesus had alreadyexplained to His disciples that He would be leaving them—but He told them that they would not be left alone and that theirsituation would actually improve. Conclude the activity by saying: Today we begin a study emphasizing the role of theHoly Spirit, the One who empowers our lives in ways that we could never imagine.

Media: Rob Banister Reports: I Ain’t Afraid Of No Ghost(3–5 minutes, Reverb Media Pass required)

If your church has purchased the Reverb Media Pass or the Reverb DVD, preview and arrange to show the “Rob Banister”video. (If your church has not purchased the Reverb Media Pass, you can purchase this single video through the “Media”tab.)

Play the video for your students. When the video is over, ask students what they thought about the video. Point out that thevideo expresses some questions people have about the Holy Spirit. Ask: Do you have questions about the Holy Spirit? What are some of those questions? (Encourage students to sound off with questions they may have. You might want tovoice some questions of your own you might have had or have currently.) Then, say: Dr. Dorsett made an amazingstatement in the video. He said that the Holy Spirit is to us today what Jesus was to the disciples. In the same wayJesus walked and taught the disciples, the Holy Spirit is present with us. Have you ever thought of the Spirit thisway? If not, get ready. We’re about to spend the next six weeks learning all about the Holy Spirit and the role Heplays in our lives.

Especially for Younger Students: A Secret Helper(10 minutes, moderate set-up)Provide a loaf of bread, peanut butter, jelly, plastic knives, plastic tarp, and paper towels.

Place the condiments, bread, and plastic knives on separate tables around the room. Call on students to find a partner.Instruct one student to stand in front of another student and place his hands behind his back. Instruct the second student toput his arms through the first student’s arms, creating the illusion that the arms of the second student belong to the first

student. Prompt all students to pair off like this and move quickly from one station to the next while attempting to make apeanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich and then eat it. Provide paper towels for cleaning up afterward. You may also want to put aplastic tarp beneath the area where the sandwiches are being created and consumed.

Afterward, ask: How difficult was it making the sandwich with this kind of “help”? Allow students to respond. Thenconclude the activity by saying: Unlike the “help” you had with another student standing behind you, the Holy Spiritis the real deal—the real Helper who goes with us wherever we go, helping us in all that we do for Christ’s sake. For the next six weeks we’ll be studying the Holy Spirit. We’ll learn all about how He empowers us to do the workof God. That’s the focus of this study.

Especially for Older Students: Famous Duos(5–10 minutes, easy set-up)Download the “Famous Duos” activity sheet. Print one copy for your own use. Also provide pens and paper.

Divide students into two groups. Instruct each group to line up shoulder-to-shoulder and face the other group. Informstudents that you will call out the name of one person who is part of a famous duo. Explain that they are to call out the nameof the other partner in that duo. Start with the student at the head of the line of the first team. If that team misses, the otherteam may try also. If both teams miss, then you move to the next duo and the next team.

Afterward, discuss a few of the famous duos and ask students how the partners helped each other to complete whatevermission they were involved in. Allow students to respond, then say: If we know Christ through a relationship with Him,then we too have a famous partner who is a help to us in every matter of life. He is the Holy Spirit, and this studyis all about Him and how He works in and through us, giving us the power that we need to accomplish Hispurposes and plan.

Key Study: Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It . . .(15–20 minutes, easy set-up)Download the Student Worksheet. Print a copy for each student. Also provide pens, candles, and matches. If possible, prepare to darken the room. Also prepare four signs to place on the floor. Label the signs “Jerusalem,” “Judea,” “Samaria,”and “The Ends of the Earth.”

Using the Ancient Jerusalem map, point out the Mount of Olives, which is where Jesus ascended to Heaven (Acts 1:12). Usingthe Life of Christ Timeline, point out the period following the resurrection and before the period of the New TestamentChurch.

Distribute a candle to each student. Instruct students to stand in a circle as you darken the room. As you begin to speak, lightyour candle. Say: Imagine that you have been given the most awesome gift in all of your life. But the gift is notmeant to be yours alone. It is a gift that others receive and a gift that is meant to be shared with others. As youspeak these words, light the candles of students on either side of you in the circle, then motion for them to light the candlesof the students beside them until the flame has been passed to every student. Say: Suddenly you realize that you are notthe only one who possesses the gift, but there are others, and you are not alone. Maybe you felt lonely in yourpossession of the gift, but as it was given to others it seemed as though someone turned the light on. There wasgreat power and light in that gift—power to transform the world from darkness to marvelous light! Gesture forstudents to blow out their candles as you blow yours out. Then turn the lights back on.

Call for a student to read Acts 1:4–9. Then explain that the resurrected Jesus stood on the Mount of Olives outside ofJerusalem when He spoke these words to His disciples. Tell students that just before Jesus’ crucifixion, He had shared severalthings with His disciples about the Holy Spirit, including the Spirit’s role in their lives and the fact that He was coming to livewith them forever (John 14:16).

Distribute pens and copies of the Student Worksheet at this time. As you work through the following questions, bear in mindthat the underlined words and phrases are the answers to the questions on the Student Worksheet. Ask: What did Jesus tellHis disciples to do before receiving the gift that He was giving to them (v. 4)? (Answer: He told them to remain in

Jerusalem.) Explain that Jesus wanted His disciples to be together on the very special day when He would send the HolySpirit. On that day (Pentecost) it would be clear to them how they were to accomplish the mission that Jesus had given tothem. Ask: What did Jesus reveal was to be the role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of His disciples? Point students toverse 8, then allow them to respond. Say: The Holy Spirit gives us power. Just as in that day, Jesus’ followers todayhave the power of the Holy Spirit. Share that such power enables Jesus’ followers to speak and act boldly as His witnesses, just as it did among His disciples. Say: They weren’t the same, and when we receive the Holy Spirit into our lives, weare not the same either.

Ask: How many of you like to travel? Allow students to respond. Then ask: How many of you don’t like to travel? Allowstudents to respond. Then say: In Jesus’ day, travel was hard and long and often on foot or by ship. But Jesus toldHis disciples that they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. Point to thedifferent signs that you have placed on the floor. Assign a few students to stand around the “Jerusalem” sign, a few to standaround the “Judea” sign, a few around “Samaria,” and a few to stand around “The Ends of the Earth.” Ask: Where is yourJerusalem today? (your hometown) Where is your Judea today? (your state) Where is your Samaria today? (your nation)Where are the ends of the earth? (anywhere beyond the borders of your own country) Say: So maybe we’re not realcrazy about traveling, and we don’t know anything about those people over at “the ends of the earth.” How are wesupposed to make an impact and accomplish God’s mission? Remind students that Jesus’ disciples discovered theanswer: the empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

Using an Eight Essential Truths poster or bookmark, point to the Essential Truth that saysThe Holy Spirit is God andEmpowerer. (If your church has not purchased the Eight Essential Truths posters or bookmarks, you can print a list of theEight Essential Truths from the “What We Believe” link at www.studentlifebiblestudy.com.) Explain that in this series calledEmpowered, students will discover some incredible things about the Holy Spirit and what He is able to do to prepare us toaccomplish the mission that Christ has given to us. State that we may surprise even ourselves at the ways He will transformour lives and cause us to desire the things that He desires.

Especially for Younger Students: Ask Your Doctor(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)Download the “Ask Your Doctor” activity sheet. Print a copy for each student. Also download the “Answers” activity sheet.Print one copy for your own use. Last, provide a pen and Bible encyclopedia for each group of students.

Divide students into groups of three or four. Distribute pens, Bible encyclopedias, and copies of the “Ask Your Doctor”activity sheet. Instruct students to look up “Luke” in the encyclopedias and answer as many of the questions on the activitysheet as possible.

Give students about three or four minutes to respond to the questions, then prompt them to come together and compare theiranswers. Explain that we have so many details about what happened in Jesus’ life and what happened in the early days of theChurch because Luke was a very detailed writer. Say: Maybe he wrote in such detail because he was a doctor.

Especially for Older Students: A Renewable Source of Power(5 minutes, easy set-up)Provide a dry erase board and dry erase marker.

Prompt students to list as many sources of power and energy as they can think of. Write their responses on the dry eraseboard. (Possible answers: electricity, coal, oil, natural gas, gasoline, wind, water, nuclear) Ask: How are these sources ofenergy used? (in cars, boats, trucks, trains, airplanes, ships, household appliances, office buildings, plants, machinery)

Call on a volunteer to read Acts 1:8. Then ask: What is the source of power referred to in this verse? (the Holy Spirit)How is this a renewable source of energy? (It is never used up because it comes from God, who is an infinite source ofpower.) How is this power used? (to enable us to speak boldly, to be a witness, to go to places we would never dream ofgoing, to love others and share the gospel with them, to speak the truth concerning Scripture and Christ, to use the gifts withwhich He equips us) What is required to tap into this source of power? (a saving relationship with Jesus Christ) Explainto students that Jesus’ disciples would learn after the Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost that they were empowered todo many things that they had never before thought possible. Explain further that when we read before-and-after accounts ofthe apostles, we see very different men after the coming of the Holy Spirit. Say: Those who lacked wisdom and couragewere suddenly transformed. The amazing thing is that the power of the Holy Spirit never runs out. That same

power that was given to the apostles is available to us today through the Holy Spirit.

Teaching Plan: Transform ActivitiesAll activity sheets are at the end of this printable lesson

Deeper Discussion(5–8 minutes, easy set-up)

Lead your students to discuss the following questions:

What evidence do you see of the Holy Spirit’s activity in the world today?●

How have you seen the power of the Holy Spirit displayed in the lives of others?●

How do you depend on the Holy Spirit in your daily life?●

How does the Holy Spirit specifically help us to fulfill His mission of being His witnesses?●

How do you see the Holy Spirit at work in your life today? What do you see Him empowering you to do?●

Especially for Younger Students: Before and After(10 minutes, easy set-up)Create two signs, one that says “Before” and the other that says “After.” Post the signs in different locations in the room. Alsoprovide two sets of construction paper, tape, and markers—one set for each sign.

Point out the two signs that say “Before” and “After.”Challenge students to take a few moments and think about their livesbefore they knew Christ and after the time in which they entered into a relationship with Him. Emphasize that when theybecame Christians, the Holy Spirit entered into their lives in that moment and began doing His work of empowering. Ask:What was your life like before the Holy Spirit came to live in you? Direct students to go to a table with constructionpaper and markers near the sign that says “Before.”Instruct them to write their thoughts in one-word responses or shortsentences on a sheet of construction paper, attach a piece of tape on the back, and place it near the “Before” sign. Then ask:How have you been able to recognize the Holy Spirit’s activity in your life since you came to know Christ?Encourage students to do the same thing with the construction paper on the other table, placing their sheets next to the“After” sign.Note: Be sensitive to those who are present who may not yet know Christ and have no understanding of what itis like to know the Holy Spirit’s presence. Don’t force anyone to write and post a response.

Take the opportunity to share that when we enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ, His Spirit (the Holy Spirit) comes tolive in us and act in the ways that we’ve described today, offering us power that we’ve never known before. Move to the twodifferent signs on the wall and discuss any responses that have been posted by students. Say: The more you grow in yourrelationship with Christ, the more you are going to begin to recognize the presence and power of His Spirit livingin you. Share that this study is just the beginning of a journey to get to know the Holy Spirit and how He works and acts inour lives.

Especially for Older Students: Waiting to Do the Things I Can’t(10 minutes, easy set-up)Provide index cards, pens, dry erase board, and dry erase marker.

Say: The word wait is not a word that we like to hear in American culture. We’re not people who enjoy waiting allthat much. We like instant gratification. Ask: What are some of the things that we encounter every day that seekto take the waiting out of our lives? List student responses on the dry erase board. Then say: But Jesus told Hisdisciples to waitin Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit would come. Some things are worth waiting for.

Distribute index cards and pens to students at this time. Lead them to make a list of things that they would like to see theHoly Spirit do in and through their lives. Prompt students by asking: Have you ever wanted to share your faith with thatother student or friend at school—but you just couldn’t bring yourself to do it? That would be one item to list.Have you seen how the Holy Spirit has acted in the lives of others and considered that maybe you’ve missed out? What was it that He did in and through them that caught your attention? That would be another. Give students afew minutes to make their lists. Allow students to share a few things that they’ve written down. Then say: Jesus’ disciples

saw Jesus do some pretty incredible things that they may have longed for the ability and the boldness to do. Afterwaiting as Jesus asked them to do, He sent His Holy Spirit to live in them, and then things started getting prettyexciting. Tell students to turn their cards over and respond to the following question: What might the Holy Spirit betelling you that He wants to do in and through your life? Give students a few moments to write their responses andthen share them. Say: Just like Jesus told His disciples what the Holy Spirit would do when He arrived, the Spiritoften tells us what He is about to do with and through our lives. The question is this: Are you willing to wait onHim, and are you ready to be obedient with what He wants to do in and through you?

Challenge students to slip their cards into their Bibles to remind them that the Holy Spirit is active in them, is calling them torespond to Him in obedience, and is in the process of equipping and empowering them to be His witnesses.

Creative Prayer(10 minutes, easy set-up)Display a large world map. Print the text of Acts 1:8 and place it next to the map. Also provide markers. Provide someworshipful music to play in the background.

Encourage students to focus on the world map and commit to allowing the Holy Spirit to work in them to fulfill His mission inActs 1:8. The commitment may be broken down into three categories/levels.

Pray—Ask students to make a commitment to focus and pray for a region on the map for six months to a year. Lead●

students to sign their name over the region.Give—Ask students to make a commitment to give to a particular offering in order for Acts 1:8 to be carried out. This can●

be done through a variety of church-wide programs as well as youth-oriented programs and opportunities.Go—Ask students to make a commitment to pray about going to a particular region through an upcoming missionary trip●

that is for the youth group or the entire church body. Invite students to sign their name over the region.

Conclude the prayer experience by inviting the Holy Spirit to do whatever He wants to do through the lives of each studentpresent.

Reverb Student Book: New Beginnings(10 minutes, Reverb student book required)If your church has purchased the Reverb student book, preview the activity on page 168 titled “New Beginnings.” If possible, provide a copy of the book to reference as you mention the activity to students.

As students work through pages 164–169 in the Reverb student book this week, challenge them to take about 10–15 minutesand work through the three segments of the “New Beginnings” activity on page 168. Then say: Wherever there are newbeginnings in Scripture, the Holy Spirit is present. The Spirit has always been a part of God’s plan in redeemingHis people. Encourage students to begin to get to know the Holy Spirit, who lives within them.

TEAM: Yeah!

CCH: You’ve been looking forward to today fora really long time, worked hard for it,sweated for it, bled for it, and it's finallyhere.

TEAM: Yeah!

CCH: Everything we've been doing all yearcomes down to this. Some of you havebeen playing for me for a while now, andtoday—this moment—marks theculmination of our years together. This isproof that none of our labor has been invain, that we can achieve our dreams, and that so long as we persevere there isabsolutely nothing, and I mean

NOTHING, that can stand between usand our goals.

TEAM: Yeah!

CCH: Today I stand before you prouder thanI've ever been before, more excited aboutwhat the future holds, and moredetermined to get out there and win at thegame of life. You see, opportunities likethis don't always come knocking, butwhen they do you've got to grab the bullby the horns and never let go until youwrestle it to the ground, hog-tie its legstogether, roast it kicking and screamingover an open pit, and then eat it up withnothing but a side of ketchup.

(Team members begin looking at each otherconfusedly.)

CCH: You with me?!

TEAM: (hesitantly) Yeah?

CCH: Good. 'Cause that's exactly what I'mdoing. I finally got the call. That’s right. They're bringing me up to the majorleagues, effective immediately. So, youall have a good life and remember what Itaught you. Bye.

(COACH turns to leave.)

P1: Wait! Coach!

CCH: Yes, my boy?

P1: What about the game?

CCH: Game? What game?

P2: The game that starts in about twominutes.

CCH: Oh, right. That game. Yeah. Good luckwith that.

(COACH turns to leave again.)

P3: But, Coach—what're we supposed to do?

CCH: Oh, come on. It's easy. Just, you know,do what we did in practice.
