1.What would you have done if you had been the President of your country?(If I were president of my country, I would distribute money to the poor every day.)

2.What would you have done in your last holiday if time, money etc had been no limit? (If time and money had been no limit, I would have travelled the world).

3.How would your life have been different if you had been born a girl?(If I were a girl, Id have to put on makeup.)

4.How would your country be different if someone different had won the last election?(If someone different had won the election, my country would have never won the war.)

Using the whiteboard as a visual reference for the students, the teacher will lead a review on the uses of the second, and third conditional tenses in the English language. Study

10T-S

2nd Conditional If + Past Tense Would + InfinitiveFor example: If I had a Million dollars Id give most to my wife. There are kind of 2 clauses here There is If + the subject (it also could be I, he she) + had (simple past), I+ would (or might) + present tense. The 2nd conditional talks about an unreal situation. Something that may be very unlikely. It also talks about the present or the futureFrom the above example: If I had a Million dollars Id give most to my wife. This could be unreal, unlikely. First of all I may not have a million dollars and as much as I like my wife I probably may not give her a Million dollars. So here is pretty unlikely and unreal situation.

The other common thing for the 2nd conditional is if you want to give an advice or suggestion to someone you can sayIf I were you, Id look for another job. OrIf I were a girl, Id call myself Angel. The interesting thing here is we use 'I were' instead of 'I was'

More examples of 2nd conditionalIf I won the lottery, I would travel around the world and buy a castle in Norway.(I think it is very unlikely that I will win the lottery. However, in this unlikely condition, I will travel and buy a castle). If I wasn't watching TV now, I would be playing football.(I am watching TV, but I am imagining an alternative activity I would be doing if I wasn't watching TV).

Additional pointsWe can use other modal verbs in place of would. If I had more money, I could buy a car.Buying a car would be possibleIf I won the lottery, I might give all the money to charity.Giving the money to charity is only a possibility

Study10T-S3rd Conditional If + Past Perfect Tense Would have + Past Participle

If + past perfect + would have + verb (past participle)For example: If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.We use third conditional to imagine a different past. The structure is also a little different to 2nd conditional. If I 'd done my homework, my teacher wouldn't have shouted at me.In reality I didn't do my homework and my teacher shouted at me.She would have passed her exam if she had studied more.In reality she didn't study enough and so she didn't pass her examAdditional points1.We can use other modal verbs in place of would. oIf they'd come earlier, they could have got a seat. Study10T-S Work sheets

2nd Conditional practice

1.Would you believe it if your friend said that he or she had seen a ghost?2.Would you believe it if you saw a video of a ghost on TV?3.Would you want to see a ghost if you knew that it was safe?4.Would you buy a house if it was half the usual price because there was a ghost in it?5.If your house had a ghost in it, would you tell the estate agent when you sold the house?

3nd Conditional practiceComplete at least half of the sentences below and then read out JUST THE PART YOU HAVE WRITTEN (not the part that was originally on the worksheet) of one and see if your partner can work out which sentence it comes from.

1.If Id got up just a few minutes ago,_______________ ____________________2.If Id been born with a different gender,____________ _____________________3.If Id been born with a different nationality,__________ _____________________4.If I Id been born an animal,_____________________ _______________________5. If Id been born with two heads,__________________ __________________________

Study15S-TStimulating ways to practise the imaginary situations and advice, negotiations and moral dilemmas meanings of the second conditional.

Moral DilemmasSecond conditionals are used in real life to talk about questions like What would you do if you had to choose between letting a war criminal go free so that hed stop the war and continuing the war until he could be brought to justice? Giving students a few questions like this to discuss can be intellectually stimulating and produce a good mix of the second conditional and other language.

2. Guess My AnswerThe Moral Dilemmas activity above can be made more fun by getting students to guess their partners answers before they ask the questions. This also works for other meanings of the second conditional such as tentative offers in negotiations. Giving students a list of deals such as If I gave you 1,000 pounds, would you do my washing up for a month? and get them to guess what their partners will say before they ask the question. They can then make up similar sentences specifically to elicit a particular response, e.g. Would you give me your wife if I gave you my bicycle? to obtain a No, I wouldnt.

Practising third conditional1. The Answer Me Game!Students are given some very general endings of third conditional sentences such as I would have felt sad or My mother would have been proud of me. They have to ask third conditional questions to their partner to get exactly those responses from them to discard the card and get one point, e.g. How would you have felt if our teacher had died just before this class? or How would you mother have felt if you had won a medal in the army?. If they get different responses (e.g. I wouldve been glad that the test was cancelled), then they have to wait until their next turn and try again with a different question..

2.The Comedy characterGive them the sentence endings to third conditional sentences connected to places where clumsy or idiotic comedy characters such as Mr Bean or Inspector Clousseau mess up, e.g. he wouldnt have got his head stuck in a turkey. When students think they have seen enough of the video to be able to make the correct first part of the sentence (often predicting the reasons for it long before they see it happen), they shout Stop! and say the whole sentence. Watch up to when that mess up happens, then reward points.

The Teacher will participate in the games in order to provide a model for the students, in order to correct mispronunciations and reinforce appropriate use of grammar, and as a means of informal assessment of each persons progress and difficulties
