Additional Influences on the Curriculum
Grade Level: EDU 201 Subject: What is Taught? Chapter 5 Prepared By: Kasey Graves
Overview & Purpose
Curriculum and instruction go hand in hand. How a teacher delivers the curriculum will affect the way students absorb it, and what they will do with it. Technology is evolving in the classroom, presently many textbooks come with interactive disks to go with lessons. There is also talk about switching from hardbacks to e-texts in the classroom. The students in class today will learn that there are different ways to present materials, and also that they have certain standards they must meet in their classrooms.

Objectives1. Understand that
textbooks are seen as a national curriculum, and how this affects materials that a teacher presents.
2. Understand how technology can replace textbooks.
3. Understand interdisciplinary curriculum and how to apply it to different standards.
Have the class divide into two groups for this lesson Begin Prezi (which outlines key points from students text p.143-
146) Pause after You Tube Video and have a classroom discussion
(Verification for objectives 1 and 2) Continue with Prezi, pause on image of Interdisciplinary teaching
graph. (Leave up for students as they work on their activity, they can also refer to their book pg. 145)
Know where to find standards Difference between E-books and traditional textbooks Understand Interdisciplinary Curriculum Be able to apply interdisciplinary curriculum to a standard

Curriculum
Individual teacher is a major variable in what students actually learn.
No national curriculum is established, but textbooks are often referred to as a “national curriculum
Implementation of content standards; school boards, and faculty are responsible for adopting textbooks.
Quality of textbooks(interactive disks) E-Books give instructors more options and a different way to
teach Interdisciplinary Teaching Style
Critics claim textbooks are “dumbed” down, can contain too much information, focus on skills development instead of stimulation of students’ interest and intellect. Teachers and students rely to much on textbooks, instead of primary sources.
Electronic Textbooks be a better approach for teachers to meet the needs of each standard and provide lessons focusing more on the interest of students
Using a theme to integrate multiple subjects at one time(Students can find more information in their books p.142-145)
VerificationObjective 1 and 2: Play You Tube video when prompted in Prezi regarding E-books then have an in class discussion on their thoughts of bringing technology the classroom in this way.
After watching You Tube video discuss your thoughts. What are the benefits to using E-books? Are there any cons? Do they have any ideas on how they would like to see technology added to their curriculum?

ActivityObjective 3: (10 Minutes) Give both groups three Idaho Core Content Standards and an Interdisciplinary graph. They are to choose one standard and create their own interdisciplinary graph for that standard. Have a classroom discussion once they are finished to see what ideas they have come up with.
Participation, and share thoughts with class when finished.
SummaryI hope that you can all see that there are many factors that will affect what materials you teach and how you present them. You are going to be required to follow the Idaho Core Content Standards. You may or may not choose to use technology in your classroom. However, the way that you teach the material will determine the effectiveness the material makes on your students.
Finish group activity, and classroom discussion.Additional NotesEnd with “wrap up” questions.
