Lesson Topic: National Symbols

Grade 6

Overall Objective: students will learn language to describe National Symbols, they will also be able to write an essay about them using comparative language

Stage of Lesson Activity TimeWarm up –revising the comparisons of adjectives

Teacher handouts the students pictures of the statue of Liberty, Kartlis Deda and Eiffel Tower and also word cards(tall, taller, the tallest, old, older, the oldest, short, shorter the shortest)and asks the students to match them and after that to make up sentences using these comparatives and superlatives.(e.g. Kartlis Deda is tall, The Statue of Liberty is taller than Kartlis Deda , Eiffel Tower is the tallest)

Activity 1 Teacher introduces the new words such as a torch, a bowl of wine, a sword, goddess, a tablet of laws, anniversary, commemorate. she displays the images of these words, then shows the words and makes students guess the meaning of these words. Then students match the words with their images

Activity 2 Teacher hands out handout1 and asks the students to read the main facts about the Statue of Liberty and Kartlis Deda , after that asks students mark if each fact is the example of similarity or difference.

Activity 3 Teacher shows students how to work on Venn Diagram, then hands out handouts2 and asks them to fill in Venn Diagrams, the similarities and differences

Activity 4 Teacher explains the structure of an essay, then hands out handout3 and asks students to write an essay about National Symbols, about their similarities and differences

Assessment students will be graded according to the criteria that are made beforehand. At the end of the lesson teacher asks the students what they have learnt, what they liked.

It symbolizes national value. It is the symbol of friendship. It is also a symbol of freedom for new immigrants to this country
