HOW TO WRITE SMART OBJECTIVES

An objective is a clear statement of something that needs to be accomplished over a period of time. SMART objectives are:• Specific – states exactly what you need to achieve• Measurable – includes a quality or quantity measure• Accurate – age appropriate and relevant• Realistic – can be challenging but must be achievable• Time bound – with a clear end date or timescale• Number every objective• Begin every learning outcome with an action word (verb) e.g.

‘differentiate’, ‘list’, ‘describe’ etc.

OBJECTIVES SHOULD BE MEASURABLE

Avoid words or phrases such as:• know / learn / remember • think / appreciate / perceive • comprehend / understand • be aware of / be familiar with • have knowledge of / grasp the significance

These are NOT measurable
