Lesson Planning Checklist

Lesson planning starts with objectives, not activities

Lessons implement a variety of activity types

Lessons reflect student needs and choice

Lesson Plan Structure

Lesson Planning Templates

● BDA: Before, During, After● Presentation, Controlled Practice, and Production● Deductive approach - teaching rules and having students practice● Inductive approach - show students examples and have them identify rules

What are the pros of the deductive approach? The inductive approach? What are the cons?

Inductive Learning Example

Level 5 - Lesson on constructive criticism, dependent and independent clauses with “Although”

Introduced inductively through “compliment sandwiches” - create context for students to use target grammar

Eg. “Although you are very punctual, you do not get your work done fast enough”

How would you introduce the following lesson inductively?

Students will be able to use the modal verbs “should” and “have to” to indicate suggestions and necessities.

Pair/Group Work

Language develops through use and interaction - so give students opportunities to collaborate!

● Think, pair, share● Group/team work

How would you integrate pair/group work into the following lesson?

● Students will be able to respond to simple yes/no questions and some wh questions.

Multimodality

Different language modalities (listening, speaking, reading, writing) develop at different times for different students, so be sure to integrate all 4 in each lesson!

● Give students multiple means of expression

● Integrate all 4 modalities into your teaching to support students

How would you integrate multimodality into the following lesson?

● Students will be able to talk about dangerous weather.

Implementing Choice

Students’ intrinsic motivation to learn increases with autonomy. Whenever possible, allow students to choose what they do.

● Choose topics/prompts from a pre-provided list

● Vote on different activities● Use “stations”

How would you integrate choice into the following lesson?

● Students will be able to summarize a text.

Contingency plans

● When in doubt, always plan extra so you have a “backup plan” if time runs short!

● Contingency plans to keep in your back pocket:○ Writing reflections/journaling○ Review of current events○ Role playing, charades, BINGO, pictionary with vocabulary

Lesson Objectives

● Before you plan activities, it is important to consider broader, language and content objectives. This is the crux of “backwards design.”

● SWBAT...● “A collection of activities does not

add up to coherent, focused, and generative learning.”

Collaboration

Some of your greatest resources are your peers.

● Use the teacher schedule to locate contact information for teachers who teach your same level

● If you have a resource you’d like to share, email Joe to place it on the Weebly
