Math Feather dice game -
Make 2 birds out of play
dough. Make sure they are
each a different color. Get
some feathers, preferably
the same colors as the
play dough. Grab a die.
Use the directions from this
turkey feather dice game.
Bird number matching -
Use the included printable
for this. Match the bird
(numeral) to its egg (dots).
Bird seed measurement
- Set up multiple cylindrical
containers (choose differ-
ent shapes and sizes).
Place a different printable
bird on each. Use a scoop
to “feed” each bird bird-
seed. Count how many
scoops it takes before
each bird is full. Record on
the included sheet.
Order the birds - Use
bird toys or the included
printable. Put the birds
in order from smallest to
largest (and vice versa).
Feed the bird - Use a
stuffed bird or the bird
printable. Roll printable
number cube. Use tongs to
pick that many
"worms" (plastic fishing
worms or chenille stems) to
feed the bird.
Birds
LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION
Science Bird feeder - Make a bird
feeder together. Hang it
where kids can observe
the birds. Milk carton bird
feeders are super simple.
Keep track of birds seen
on this sheet. (TF)
Build a birdhouse - Draw
a plan for a birdhouse.
Use craft sticks and glue
to build a birdhouse.
Flying birds - Make
"birds" (paper airplanes
you decorate to look like
birds). Test flying them out-
doors. Discuss observations
about wind and design.
Measure the distance in
footsteps.
Feather experiments -
Stand on an elevated sur-
face (playground or back
porch). Let feathers go.
Discuss what happens.
Discuss ways to modify the
experiment - maybe by
getting the feathers wet or
comparing them to other
objects, like a rock.
Bird sounds - Listen to
this video of bird
sounds. Discuss the dif-
ferent sounds birds
make and let the kids
try to make them too.
(TF)
Literacy B and N sound sort - Sort
words based on if they
start with /b/ like bird or /n/
like nest.
Fly for Bb - Fly (flap arms)
like a bird when you hear
a word that starts with /b/.
You can also play this
game using b and d print-
able cards, with kids
“flying” when they see b.
Bird nest letter matching
- Make a “nest” and put
alphabet eggs inside. Chil-
dren match uppercase to
lowercase letters.
Bird syllable clap - Say a
bird name (refer to
printable list of sugges-
tions). Kids clap (or snap
their hands like beaks
closing) to count the
syllables in the word.
Emergent reader - Print
out and assemble
emergent reader. Use
crayons or kids’ finger-
prints in washable ink
pads for the illustrations.
Other Bird art invitation - Place
out a variety of materials
(paper plates, feathers,
various craft materials like
googly eyes, cut pieces of
chenille stems, foam or
paper shapes) kids can
use to make bird art. (TF)
Play dough bird’s nest -
Break out the play dough
and other materials for a
play dough invitation.
Bird seed sensory bin -
Pour bird seed into a bin.
Add scoops, cups, etc. for
children to use during sen-
sory play. Add small bird
toys, if available.
Painted bird’s nest - Use
a sponge or bath loofah to
paint a bird’s nest. Have
children cut them out in an
oval shape. Add eggs.
Optional - decorate bird
eggs like real bird eggs
you've seen in nonfiction
books.
Sew a nest - Use hole
puncher to put holes in
various spots in a paper
plate. Let kids use different
colors of brown yarn to
weave and sew all over
back and forth to create a
nest. Add in some bird
drawings they create dur-
ing independent time.
(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

Birds
INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on
their own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken
down by subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly
Math
Bird patterns - Create patterns
using printable bird cards.
Color sorting - Sort feathers or
pompoms onto the appropri-
ate bird printable (based on
color). (TF)
Literacy
Sensory writing tray - Place
bird seed in a shallow tray. Use
fingers or feathers to practice
writing letters and words.
Word making - Use letter tiles,
magnetic letters, or other let-
ter manipulatives to make the
printable bird words.
Science
Is it a bird? - Sort pictures into
two categories: “Bird” and
“Not a bird”.
Real birds - Draw pictures of
real birds that are in your area
(or found in non-fiction books).
Write a description about the
birds.
Sensory
Nest sensory bin - Add shred-
ded brown paper into a bin.
Place small bird toys and eggs
in the bin. Use tweezers and
fingers to find all of the birds
and place them in their eggs.
(TF)
Block Play
Giant bird nest - Use blocks to
make a big bird nest. Add bird
toys or pretend to be birds. (TF)
LEGO birds - Use LEGO bricks
or pattern blocks to make
birds.
Arts and Crafts
Simple bird art - Use a few sim-
ple materials to draw birds.
Torn paper nests - Tear bits of
paper into strips and small
squares. Use glue to assemble
the pieces into a nest.
