Math Robot roll and graph - Roll

the robot cube. Then add

to the graphing sheet.

Once done, make

observations (which had

the most, which had the

least, etc.).

Felt shape robots - Cut

basic shapes out of felt.

Children can assemble

their own robots using

these felt shapes (on a felt

board or a larger piece of

felt). (TF)

Nuts and bolts patterns -

Use nuts, bolts, and any

other “robot parts” you

have on-hand (like

washers or toy gears). Ex-

plore different kinds of pat-

terns (AB, ABC, ABB, etc.).

Robot shape creations -

Cut basic shapes out of

construction paper. Have

kids create a robot out of

the shapes. Count how

many of each shape they

used. (TF)

Weigh nuts and bolts - Use

a scale to weigh varying

amounts of nuts and bolts.

Count and make observa-

tions each time.

LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION

Science Robot maker space - Give

kids cardboard boxes and

collage materials and let

them create their own ro-

bots.

Tin can robots - Use tin

cans, magnets, and craft

materials to create tin can

robots. Extend this by using

the magnets to determine

other items that are mag-

netic.

Explore simple circuits -

Delve into basic electricity

with this activity. If the ma-

terials aren’t available to

you, create a list of items

that use electricity.

Balancing robot - Use the

printable robot to explore

balancing.

Robot body puzzle - Build

the robot puzzle, discuss-

ing different body parts.

Compare to the human

body.

Literacy Robot rhymes - Make a

robot out of a cardboard

box. Feed the robot ob-

jects that rhyme.

Beginning sounds - Use the

cardboard box robot from

the other day. Feed the

robot objects that start

with the /r/ sound.

Robot story writing - Work

together to create a story

about a robot with a spe-

cial talent.

Emergent reader - Make

an easy reader about col-

orful robots. Choose

whichever printable

reader suits the child best.

Robot family book - Make

each member of your

family into a robot. Write

“(Name) is a robot.” Add a

picture of each person’s

face to the robot. Com-

bine the pages to make a

book.

Other Giant cardboard robot -

Make a giant robot out of

large cardboard boxes

and decorate as a collab-

orative project throughout

the week.

Painting with gears - Use

toy or real gears for pro-

cess art. This can also be

done with nuts and bolts. (TF)

Robot vests - Use recycla-

bles to create homemade

robot vests.

Discovery bottle robot -

Make an interactive senso-

ry bottle all about robots.

Add letters or numbers to

the nuts/bolts as desired.

Robot play dough

invitation - Make silver play

dough and place it on a

tray. Add loose parts (like

nuts, bolts, washers, metal-

lic pipe cleaners, etc.) kids

can use to make robots

out of play dough.

(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their

own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by

subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly

Math

Number cards - Place robot num-

ber cards on a tray. Children can

put them in numerical order,

count them, sort them, etc. Add

nuts and bolts to explore one-to-

one correspondence.

Nuts and bolts numbers - Add

numbers to nuts and bolts. Chil-

dren can match and sort.

Sorting and matching nuts and

bolts - Sort nuts and bolts by type

and size. Order from largest to

smallest.

Literacy

Robot letter cards - Children can

put the cards in alphabetical or-

der, match the letters, or make

words.

Alphabet nuts and bolts - Add

uppercase letters to nuts and low-

ercase letters to bolts. Have chil-

dren match them and assemble.

Robot pretend play - Use the ro-

bot vests and pretend to be ro-

bots.

Science

Tin can robots - Create various

robots with the tin cans and mag-

nets.

Magnet tray - Place magnets,

magnetic items, and non-

magnetic items on a tray. Chil-

dren can explore what is magnet-

ic and what isn’t. Observations

can be recorded in a science

journal.

Sensory

Robot sensory bin - Place a base

of black beans into a bin. Add

metallic pipe cleaners, nuts, bolts,

and any other “robot parts” on-

hand. Place magnets, cups, and

spoons next to the sensory bin.

Block Play

Build a robot - Tape robot fea-

tures to wooden blocks (head,

legs, arms, etc.). Put the blocks

together to make one robot. (TF)

Robot blocks - Tape children’s

drawings to blocks. Alterna-

tively, tape printable robots to

the blocks. Create a robot

small world for the children to

pretend with. Add glass gems,

tin foil, etc. to the area. (TF)

Arts and Crafts

Sparkly robot craft - Use sparkly

foam sheets to create robot art.

Free painting - Use finger paints,

tempera paint, or watercolors to

design robots.
