Math Counting worms - Fill a
sensory bin with either real
dirt or a dirt-like material
(like coffee grounds or
black beans). Add plastic
fishing worms or gummy
worms. Place number
cards near the bin. Chil-
dren use tongs or tweezers
to pull out the correct
number of worms to
match each number card.
Worm patterns - Use
small construction paper
rectangles to build a worm
creating patterns of the
worms segments. Alterna-
tively, use colorful worm
cards to make patterns.
Measuring worms - Use
gummy worms, yarn or
cooked pasta, or printable
worms and measuring
printable. Measure how
long the worms are, or
measure household items
using the worms. Record.
Worm shapes - Use worm
manipulatives (gummy
worms, yarn, tackle worms,
or cooked pasta) to make
different shapes.
Color worms - Match
colorful worms to color
word cards. Can also sort
household items to the
correct color cards.
Worms
LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION
Science
Worm habitat - Make a
simple worm tower using a
cylindrical glass jar or vase.
Place a plastic wrapped
cardboard tube in the middle.
Alternate layers of sand and
dirt. Add the worms once
they’ve been collected. Add
food for the worms (bits of
vegetables). Be sure to mist
the tower every few days to
keep the soil damp. Wrap a
black piece of construction
paper around the outside to
keep it dark (but so you can
remove it when you want to
view the worms).
Digging for worms - Grab
a bucket and some shovels.
Go digging for real worms.
(TF)
Learning about worms -
Brainstorm a list of things you
know about worms and ques-
tions you have about worms.
Read a nonfiction book about
worms and watch Worms Are
Wonderful. Discuss things you
learned.
Gummy worm science -
Experiment with what hap-
pens when gummy worms
are put in different liquids.
Make predictions, set up the
experiment, and record re-
sults. Use this experiment as
inspiration.
Worm and dirt explora-
tion - Place real dirt/mud on
a tray, along with some real
worms. Very gently, look and
touch. Make observations in a
science journal.
Literacy
Wiggle like a worm - Say
words. Child wiggles if the
word starts with /w/.
Worm letters - Use
“worms” to make letter art.
Beginning letter match -
Match the letter cards to
the pictures that start with
those letters. Emphasize
the sounds each letter
makes.
Descriptive words - Cre-
ate a list of words that
describe worms. Ask
prompting questions as
needed.
Button worm literacy -
Have a ribbon “worm”
make its way through the
letters in a child’s name, or
the letters in the alphabet.
Other Worm painting - Dip
cooked noodles, tackle
worms, or gummy
worms into brown paint
or mud. Use them to
paint.
Wiggly worm sensory
bin - Make “mud” goop
and add plastic fishing
worms for a wormy sen-
sory experience. (TF)
Mud castles - Mix up
some mud and add
beach toys to it. Create
mud castles! (TF)
Pipe cleaner worms -
Thread pony beads on-
to pipe cleaners to
make worms.
Worm treat cup - Add
chocolate pudding to a
cup. Crushed Oreo
cookies get layered on
next. Place a few gum-
my worms on top.
(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

Worms
INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES
These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re
meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their
own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by
subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly
Math
Worm number cards - Put the
cards in numerical order, use
pretend worms to explore one
-to-one correspondence, etc.
Making numbers with worms -
Use cooked pasta, gummy,
worms, or plastic fishing worms
to form numbers.
Literacy
Worm letter puzzles - Put the
puzzles together, matching
uppercase and lowercase let-
ters.
Worm sensory writing tray -
Place sand or dirt in a shallow
tray. Add some plastic fishing
worms and some pebbles.
Create letters, words, and de-
signs in the sand/dirt using fin-
ger writing, rocks, or by drag-
ging “worms” through the dirt.
(TF)
Science
Worm habitat observation -
Take a peek at the worms in
the worm tower. Record ob-
servations about what the
worms are doing and how the
habitat changes. Add bits of
food and mist the soil each
day. (TF)
Life cycle - Put the earthworm
life cycle in order. Write or talk
about the life cycle.
Sensory
Worm play dough - Create
habitats for worms using play
dough. Add in some pretend
worms for more play. (TF)
Mud and worms - Add dirt or
mud to a sensory bin, along
with pretend worms. Include
shovels, pails, scoops, and
cups. (TF)
Block Play
The longest worm - See how
long you can make a “worm”
built of blocks. Count how
many blocks long it is, or
measure it.
Worm garden - Use blocks to
create a garden for worms to
live in. Add pretend worms.
Arts and Crafts
Worm weaving - Take a piece
of brown construction paper.
Cut slits into it at about 2-inch
intervals. Use thick ribbons or
construction paper worms to
weave in and out of the
brown paper “dirt”.
Clay worms - Make worms us-
ing air dry clay, regular clay, or
play dough.

Worm Letter Matching Puzzles Print letter cards. Cut in half diagonally, from the top-right corner to the bottom-left corner (so uppercase and lowercase are separate). Laminate for durability. Children match the uppercase to lowercase letters, like a puzzle.
