Introduction

SEAMEO RECSAM has always been in the forefront to promote excellent and inspiring science and mathematics education. One of the Centre’s initiatives that it has been embarked on is to propagate good practices in showcasing current pedagogies in science and mathematics education in order to improve classroom teaching and learning. This project is a continuation of the previous initiatives (2010 - 2012) to help teachers adopt Lesson Study in upgrading their professional growth. Hopefully, with persistent endeavour, such as this project intends to do, it will form a catalyst to attract more teachers to adopt Lesson Study as a focus to form a professional learning community for continual improvement in classroom teaching practices.

Basic Idea of Lesson StudyThe main purpose of doing Lesson Study is to improve classroom instruction. It is an on-going and teacher-led professional development endeavour in which a small group of teachers work collaboratively in goal setting, lesson planning, observing and collecting data, reflecting on feedback, and refining class lessons for continual improvement of classroom teaching and learning.

PurposesThis seminar-workshop introduces participants to the basic principles and processes of implementing Lesson Study employing good practices in inquiry-based teaching and learning. Together they will also discuss and plan strategies to overcome possible challenges involved in implementing Lesson Study in their respective schools.

ObjectivesAt the end of the seminar-workshop, the participants are able to:

1. acquire an overview of conducting Lesson Study research in teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in their respective classrooms; and

2. adopt Lesson Study as an approach to establish professional learning communities in their respective schools.
