Today we will understand that sequence is one of text structures authors use to organize text by using a sequence graphic organizer.

Authors of nonfiction text organize their ideas in certain ways, called text structures. One kind of text is sequence. In texts with this structure, events may by arranged in chronological, or time, order. Authors of historical texts often use this text structure to present real events in the order in which they happened.

Let’s try one together: The events in the paragraph

below are chronological order. Read the paragraph. Then look at graphic organizer. It shows the sequence of events in the paragraph.

To understand the sequence of events, look for time clues. The first sentence tells the date Washington was born. The second sentence tells what happened when he was fifteen. These clues make it clear when events happened.

Remember that a graphic organizer can help you summarize key information from a selection. Summarize the events in the story on a sticky note while your teachers is reading the story.

Remember to look for key words like first, next, then and finally or last.

Later, you will place events in a graphic organizer.
