ListeningLove for God begins by listening to God; and love for each other begins by listening to one another.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the Lutheran pastor and professor who was martyred by the Nazis at the end of the Second World War, wrote these words in his little book called Life Together. He wrote Life Together in the mid-1930s when he was the head of a secret, underground seminary in Germany. He intended the book to serve as a handbook for his seminary students in ordering their life together as a community of faith.

Listening—from the heart, with complete focus, attentive to the meanings and nuances behind the words—is the beginning of love. Because listening in this way says, “You are important to me. You are so important that I will put everything else aside, and focus totally on you, and try to understand exactly what is on your mind and heart. I love you, and I want to connect deeply with you.”

I believe that the Lord wants us to listen like this wherever we are: at home, in school, at work, in the sanctuary, in our prayer closets, with our family and friends, even with strangers. For we are called to love everyone, without any exceptions.

So as I begin my ministry here at Light of Christ I will be doing a lot of listening—to God and to you—because listening “from the heart” is the way that genuine love begins. What’s more, it’s also the way in which we begin to discern what God is up to in our life together. So I encourage you to listen “from the heart” as we seek the hear the Lord’s voice and follow him into the future he has for us.

Rediscover Macedonia We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. - 2 Corinthians 8:1-2

In his second letter to the Corinthians, the Apostle Paul praises the spirit of the Macedonians. He talks about them being enriched in every way for great generosity

producing thanksgiving to God.As a congregation, from Sept 25th through Oct 23rd, we will be

Rediscovering Macedonia and embracing the spiritual principles of giving.

1. Commitment

2. Sacrifice

3. Share

4. Give Freely

5. Generosity

6. Abundant Joy

7. Gratitude

We invite you to join us in hitting this year’s “10 / 1” stewardship commitment goal.

We aim for a 10% increase in overall stewardship commitments. We can achieve this goal together through increasing our personal giving by just 1% of income. The 2016

church expense budget was $455,000 and the giving estimate was $418,000. Growing the giving estimate by 10% will enable our congregation to close the gap on our budget.

If we commit as stewards in giving an additional 1% of our income annually,we will meet our target.

This year our church leaders will take the lead by making their commitments during the first week. We will be accepting commitment cards and tracking overall progress every

week. The stewardship committee is inspired and delighted to serve God and our congregation as we meet our goal together as a church family.

in Rm 102Join us as Pastor Bruce

leads us on “The Returnto Macedonia.”

The Cross: The End of Sacred Violence is the topic of the Women’s Bible Study this year. Have you ever wondered: Why are some stories in the Old Testament so violent? What are these stories doing in the Bible? What do we make of them? And how do we reconcile these stories with Jesus’ command to “turn the other cheek” and be peacemakers in a violent world? What does the cross tell us about the path to Jesus’ peaceable kingdom? We will take up these questions, and more, on the second Tuesday of each month at 10:00 AM at the church. Please join us as we seek to become more effective, faithful peacemakers amidst the violence of our world today.
