    Learning Experiences

    Week 1

    1. Issue the verbs pretest before the beginning of the unit.

    2. Hook the students with a game of Simon Says. Explain that the words that resulted in

them performing actions are called verbs. (H, T, Bodily-Kinesthetic)

    3. Introduce the essential questions and discuss the unit performance task. (W)

    4. Introduce action verbs with a short song found in notes. (H,T, Musical)

    5. The students will be broken up into three groups based on the pretest results. The

groups will be set up in 20 minute rotations. One group will be on netbooks working on the

verbs module, one group will be with the teacher, and one group will be on center activities

including mobile devices. The group that is on the center activities/mobile devices will be

working on an three apps called Grammaropolis, Grammar Up, and Grammar Express,

that are all available for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch after the center activities arecompleted. Grammaropolis is an app that goes deeper into each part of speech. There are

songs, lessons, and quizzes for each part of speech. The other two apps have quizzes on

each part of speech. After the students get finished with the independent center activities,

they have a chance to work on the apps. Distributing the mobile devices should not be a

problem because the groups will not only be divided among just six or seven students, but

the students within the groups will complete the center activities at different times.

Between the school-owned devices, and the devices brought in through BOYD, there should

be enough to go around. If not, there are plenty of interactive sites dealing with verbs that

the teacher can assign. Grammaropolis, Grammar Up, and Grammar Express are intended to

extend the learning after the basics are solid because of the module and teachers

    instruction.

    6. Review action verbs with the Grammar Tales book, A Verb for Herb. The students will

work together in small groups to write the verbs heard in the story. Center Rotations(E,T,

    Linguistic)

    7. Students are issued a challenge. To show the importance of verbs, students are

challenged to try to say a complete sentence without using a verb. (H)

Note-The students will more than likely give sentences with linking verbs when issued the

challenge thinking that all verbs show action. This challenge will serve as an introduction to

    linking verbs. (H,O)

    8. Center Rotations. (E)

    9. Use a multiple choice flipchart and Activotes (voting devices used on promethean

boards) for a formative assessment on action and linking verbs. Use the results to group

students before test for remediation or enrichment. (E-2)

    10. Students are regrouped based on formative assessment results. Students who have

shown understanding will interview one another. The goal of the interviews is to collect

data that will be placed in a spreadsheet, and then a bar graph on excel. The students will

have a list of verbs like sing, dance, and juggle for example, and tally the total number of

students who feel they can do those verbs, and turn the data into a bar graph. The students

can use desktops or netbooks to complete the bar graph. Students who need remediation

will be grouped with the teacher for extra practice. (E)

    11. Administer action and linking verbs test. Identify and use action and linking verbs.

    (E-2)

    12. Begin working on performance task. Start writing pages in the book that will discuss

action and linking verbs in a kid friendly point of view for the foreign exchange student that

will be placed in the home. (E-2, Interpersonal)
