The legion was once again standing room only for their annual Remembrance Day ceremony.

Despite being on a Saturday, many parents bundled up their kids to show their support for all who have served and are currently serving. Many businesses and individu-als laid wreaths to remember those who are no longer with us.

Sgt Jason Kent delivered a speech about initially joining the armed forces as a musician to his rise to sergeant, which included a 7 month stay in Afghanistan. He also read a touching poem written by his great grandfather, Kentvale founder Frederick Kent.

Regardless of if you were at the Legion this Saturday, or at another service or simply read other articles it’s worth repeating that more than 2,300,000 Cana-dians have served in the military and over 118,000 made the ultimate sacrifice.

A stew lunch fol-lowed the service, and poppy seeds to plant were available free of charge as well. We hope to see many blooming this spring.

Game Night Recap

The 8-week trial of game night at Richards Land-ing Old Town Hall has concluded. Started by board game expert Thomas Henshell the free event featured Euro-style board games being played by locals from teenagers to seniors.

While we only attended one of the game nights - our schedules didn’t really work for it and like many people it can be hard to get out at times - we really enjoyed playing the game called Ticket to Ride. For both new-comers like ourselves and longtime residents, it’s a great way to get out and have some (free) fun and have a chance to try new things.

With an average of 8 people a night which peaked at 10, there was always enough people to play the games. A new game was generally played every week, and previ-ous games replayed at another table for those getting a feel them. These games were likely not the games you grew up on such as Monopoly or Parcheesi, which are games based off luck, but rather these are games based on strategy, and are popular both locally and abroad.

Some of the feedback Thomas received includes people talking about the games with their coworkers. “Every week we play some weird game I’ve never heard of,” he said. “And it’s really fun! Each week I have a blast.”

“We have two teen boys that come out with their dad,” says Thomas. “He told me they start pacing the house around 6pm and ask ‘How early is too early to show up to Board Game Night?’” “I like it is an event enjoyed by teens, middle age, and 60+. There are few activities that cross such generational lines and encourage the interaction between the gener-ations,” Thomas says - and we certainly agree there are few activities that someone in their 60s and someone in their teens would enjoy. Many of us have found memo-ries of playing board games with family members, either on the weekends at home with our parents and siblings or over holidays with grandparents and other relatives.

They are currently awaiting a decision by town council on the future of game night to see if it will continue at its current location. If you have some feedback you’d like us to forward, feel free to send it to us.

Weekly Book Reviewby Tracy Howson

The Power of I AM: Two words that will change your life TodayWritten by Joel OsteenPublished by Faith Words (2015)(269 pages)

“The Power of I AM” is a book written by Joel Osteen, a pastor of an enormous church in Texas, called Lake-woods. It seats 16,000 people and is likely one of the largest and least segregated church in the world.

The premise of Osteen’s book is that it is extremely important what words you use to follow “I am…. “.

This aligns with “Be careful what you think- your thoughts become your life” or Henry Ford “Whether you think you can, or cannot you’re always right”, or Yoda “Either do or do not there is no try”. Ok that might be stretching it a bit. But it also follows a lot of the science we have read over this past year on how the brain pathways are laid down and how your chemistry changes depending on what you think.

Early in the book Osteen lays out the principle: Whatev-er follows the “I am: will eventually find you”, and that is why it is be careful what you think. And if you don’t like what found you – you need to send out some new invitations. Change your “I Ams…”.

if you have trouble coming up with positive “I Ams” he provides many. He quotes scripture “We will eat the fruit of our words” and that when you talk you are planting seeds.

Osteen then for the remainder of the book provides examples of how your “I Am” can affect your life. He uses scripture or his experience, and sometimes both, evidence of his premise. He writes you need to change your mentality from “weak to warrior”.

I did not know who Joel Osteen was, so did a wee bit of research. I discovered that although there may some disparate views on Osteen, one thing was very clear, he is seen as the face of evangelical Christian in the US. Osteen acknowledges in his book that he has generat-ed a lot of criticism as a “prosperity preacher”. You will certainly find that on-line. His writing is inspirational. His message is of hope. And yes, he is has become very, very, wealthy.
