Lester B. Pearson School Board Educational Services Department ESD Newsletter January 2013 Daycare J. Levac • Lester B. Pearson S.B. in partnership with ASGEMSQ (Association des services de garde en milieu scolaire du Québec) hosted the 3rd annual Daycare Technicians conference on November 29th & 30th in St-Sauveur. Build a Successful Daycare Team!; led by Dynamix & How to Manage your Energy Capital; led by Andrée Jetté, were the conferences offered. We had 75 participants, which represents participants from all 8 English School Boards throughout Québec. • On December 14th, with Nancy Battet, I helped judge entrepreneurship projects from grade 8 students at Beaconsfield High School. The AEP-Daycare Program first cohort finished on December 21st; congratulations to all students! The December Math Olympics events held at Riverdale and Lakeside proved again to be a big success. We were happy to see 21 schools participating. February 8th “Teaching and Learning in for the 21st C ” conference promises to be a major professional development opportunity with over 50 workshops for our elementary and secondary teachers. Workshops are being offered by LBPSB teachers, our professionals and guest speakers from several fields of expertise. In celebration of the 10 years of the Science and Technology days, an event was held in recognition of our partners’ ongoing collaboration. Many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives have evolved from these endeavors. Exciting and challenging activities are being planned for the Spring. We continue to represent our school board in several provincial and regional MELS committees. English Language Arts A. Scott Members of the Kindergarten Provincial Committee met for two days at the end of November. We discussed play and school success, and looked at the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada statement on Play-Based Learning. Teachers involved in the “Read Those Numbers” project continued to create lessons which connect numeracy and literacy through picture books. I attended a three day “Learning Forward” conference in Boston. The focus of presentations attended was on leadership and technology. The grade 4 Learning and Evaluation Situation “If You Wore My Shoes…” is underway. In-service professional development was given to St. Anthony, Christmas Park and Maple Grove schools. Français langue seconde, préscolaire/primaire H-A Denton Attended the QPAT convention on November 22nd and 23rd. I heard some interesting speakers talk about a variety of subjects related to best practices, as well as curriculum components and how to make them relevant within the classroom. • Gave a variety of workshops and support ranging from implementing “les 5 au quotidien” in the FLS classroom, to helping individual teachers access their needs in terms of building a classroom library, and deepening their knowledge of certain elements of the FLS curriculum. Overseeing the ongoing STEF project. The participants from our schools are quite involved and giving us rich feedback that is very valuable. Attended the first “Signature” training session designed to help our struggling readers. Resource teachers from many schools are attending this 3 day training given by Lynn Senecal. Nutrition Education R. Chiappetta & M. Cardin• “Cooking for Autonomy” workshop was given at the board

wide SSD professional day for Integration aides. This programwas developed in collaboration with SSD occupationaltherapists. Pilots are underway and students and staff areexcited about cooking in their schools!

• A kiosk on energy drinks was held at BHS as part of theirWellness Day. The goal was to inform the students about thecontent of energy drinks, their side effects and the potentialrisk of addiction.

• The WOTP Lakeside students catered a lunch for the LakesideAcademy Science Fair. They were very proud to be part of thisexperience!

Ethics and Religious Culture/Intercultural Education/PELO/Francisation/Univers social N. Le Bihan

• Continuous support to teachers teaching ERC (French/English –Elem./H.S)

• Intercultural: organization of a two day exchange betweensecondary 4 students from the Charlevoix region and secondary4 students from Riverdale

• Intercultural Advisory Committee meeting and Comité deréflexion en éducation interculturelle des C.S. de l’Ile de Montréal

• Répondre aux demandes des enseignants(es) qui enseignent “Univers social “ en français au primaire

Career Development & WOTP P. Gilson

• A CPR/First Aid course was offered to all our Prework andSemiskilled students.

• Some of our WOTP classrooms are piloting the use of iPads asa pedagogical tool.

• Many of our WOTP teachers are involved in a provincialmentoring program that has been organized through MELS.

• Some of our Prework and Semiskilled teachers have beeninvolved in the development of Learning and EvaluationSituations.

Work-Placement (Study) A.Scarano• Students and Animators attended the Lester B Pearson Career

Day at PCHS and everyone had an opportunity to meetnumerous partners and experience different trades.

• The Visions students of Riverdale High School went Zip liningand they had an amazing time, students learned what the realvalue of trusting your peers was during the excursion wherethey had to rely on each other.

• Lakeside students had an opportunity to visit the CareerExploration Lab in Laval, students were able to exploredifferent trades.

CFER RIVERDALE A.Scarano• The CFER Riverdale passed its first audit in the EPRA

(Electronic Products Recycling Association) Accreditationprocess, it was very hard work to prepare but well worth it.

• CFER Riverdale’s web page is continuously being updated andyour feedback is always welcome…www.cferriverdale.org

• The CFER students are working on an ongoing art projectwhere they have painted their logo on an interior wall and willpaint the CFER values on the walls.

• Old electronic equipment including Televisions, stereos,toaster etc. can always be dropped off at the CFER , 5060 Boul.Des Sources, Pierrefonds from 8:30-3:30 or call us for a pick-up at 514-684-2337

• CFER Riverdale is an e-collex site for all Samsung and Sonyproducts. Please bring in all of your old Sony and Samsungproducts to the CFER Riverdale

Elementary Math, Science et technologie S. Lussier

• Continued work with different school teams on curriculummapping for math and science-technology to incorporate allcomponents into best teaching and learning practices.

• Offered workshops on Robotics, and animated classroomactivities. Finalized the framework for the Robotics Event: RobotDuo, piloted this year with Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 students.

• Worked with Kindergarten and cycle 1 teachers to create a RoboticEvent “Aventure robotique”. This year the event will take place atSt-Edmund and will welcome around 150 students. Details tofollow in the near future.

• Continued work on a pilot project to develop math skills throughpicture books. Teachers worked on creating inquiry cards todevelop a higher level of thinking for math concepts. Organized aworkshop for Feb 8, 2013.

• Worked with Katherine Davey on organizing a pilot project toincorporate the Smarter Science framework in our schools. Thisframework is applicable to k-12. We will get certification to trainour teachers.

Elementary Physical Education P. Gilson

• We had a successful Volleyball Tournament, which took placeat John Abbott College on January 8, 9 & 10th.

• Plans are underway for the annual Cross Country Ski Loppet,which will be held at Les Cedres on February 20, 2013.

• Plans are underway for a curling event that targets Grade 3students. The event takes place at three venues: Baie D’Urfe,Glenmore and the Hudson Legion.

• The Physical Education & Health Steering Committee met onNovember 29th. This committee meets four times a year tomake recommendations on Phys Ed related activities.

Elementary Mathematics C. Brunet• Support & Promote Mathematics Curriculum Mapping using

Learning and Evaluation Situations (LESs) throughout the yearas part of best teaching and learning practices to develop the3 competencies

• Promote the use of the Evaluation Tools Spiral Booklet toconsolidate the understanding of the QEP’s mathematicscompetencies and knowledge acquisition: evaluation criteria,essential knowledge, progression of learning and frameworkfor evaluation for each cycle in order to improve our students’success.

• Grade 3 Math Exam Familiarization Sessions• Support individual schools with specific needs, teachers have

been released to meet with me for an hour at a time.

Information Communication Technology B. Hannah• Weekly visits in December to Macdonald HS to provide iPad

related PD• Ed Tech support for the two Math Olympic events at Lakeside

& Riverdale high schools• Presentation of Social Media & Web 2.0 tools in the classroom

Social Studies R. Riccardi

The focus continues to be increasing the Success rate in HCE inSec. IV. While we are maintaining the projects initiated in the fall,new projects are being developed targeting not only the Sec. IVHEC students, but all high school Social Studies programs:• As mandated by MELS and with the collaboration of the Social

Studies consultant at EMSB and teachers from the milieu, wewill be developing a professional development session whichtargets all teachers in the Anglophone school boards.

• A group of teachers from our board as well as New FrontiersSchool Board have begun work on developing an end-of-yearfinal exam for the Sec. III HCE/HÉC programs.

School & Professional Libraries, Cultural Programs& Visual Arts S. Nesbitt

• With Meg Sinclair, ESD and Purchasing, worked on developingprocedures for eReaders.

• Collaborated on Bibliomobile and Qui lira vaincra! withsecondary FSL consultants.

• Collaborated on Battle of the Books!, a school librarian drivencontest for grades 7 to 9.

• Prepared documents for LBPSB Cultural Committee.• Ongoing support for ALL Intergenerational Art project and

Culture in the schools. • With Rebecca Binet, helped plan and facilitate a MELS Peliq-an

project bringing together CSMB École secondaire Mgr. Richardand Beurling Academy grade 8 visual art students. This bilingualexchange will involve visits to both schools, and the creationof mosaic works to be displayed at each school with the help ofvisiting artists.

• Gave information literacy workshops at CWA.• Facilitated and organized the LBPSB Season’s Greeting Card

contest.

A few highlights from our school librairies• St. Paul celebrates "Love My Library Month" beginning

February 1st with a "Library Art Contest". • All Sec. 1 IB classes @ PCHS attended book laminating

workshops at the Library as part of Community Service. • Wilder had Holiday Story Time in December. Students had 30

minutes of stories and songs about Christmas and Hanukkah. • Allion library is now fully automated!• BHS Library is getting ready for Cyber Month to be held in

February.• Mount Pleasant students are celebrating Family Literacy Day

for an entire week and are holding a DEAR event.• CWA is getting a poetree to display poetry and other writing.

School Libraries, Information Literacy & OnlineDatabases M. Sinclair

• Managing a project to place Kobo eReaders, purchased by ESD,in all high school libraries and three elementary libraries.Developing purchasing and lending policies for eReaders.

• Attended a PD webinar on new standards for cataloguing.• Helping to plan workshops for library technicians for the

February 8th PD day.• Feb. 8 PD day will have us explore how school libraries navigate

the new reality of online resources and new technologies.• Planning how we assist staff and students in the use of new

sources of information without forgetting the value of printresources in our libraries.

School Libraries, Information Literacy & DatabasesR. Dixon

• Training for the Wilder Penfield library volunteers on the newautomated system in their library went well. They are nowsuccessfully using REGARD.

• Library technicians interested in learning about the newcataloguing standard, RDA, were treated to a webinar at theLibrary & Digital Resource Centre.

• The first of two SmartBoard workshops (with Sue Connery) forthe library technicians went very well. The second onepromises to be just as informative.

• A full day of workshops is planned for library technicians on theFebruary 8th professional day, on the theme of Teaching andLearning in the 21st Century.

Community Liaison/Action Lasalle M. Albert• LBPSB/McGill Homework Zone will start up again at Riverview,

Orchard and Verdun Elementary School. New McGillvolunteers will be helping our students with their homeworkafterschool.

• In First Robotics News, follow LCCHS Team #3985 Sonic Howlon their blog: http://lcchssonichowl3985.wordpress.com asthey build a robot for this year’s challenge “Ultimate Ascent”.

• Montreal Hooked on School week is quickly approaching fromMonday Feb. 11th – Friday Feb. 15, 2013. Hooked on Schoolweek encourages our youth to stay in school and strive forgreatness. Activities will be planned through out the week.

Pearson Community Partnership N. Battet• Amelia Park, from the Vanier College Wildlife and Environment

program will do her internship for six weeks with PearsonPartnership program. She will be speaking on many aspects ofecology to elementary and high schools students.

• Community partner and Engineer Jill Vandenbosch will visit theInnov@tion Center at PEC to teach students in grade 6 aboutchemical engineering. Students will develop solution to maketheir own shampoo.

• McGill faculty of Engineering will host “POWE” conference forgirls interested in Engineering, February 15, 2013.

• Elementary students will visit the Montreal Neurologicalhospital on March 15, 2013 to take part in workshops for BrainAwareness week.

• Students and professors from Montreal Neurological hospitalwill visit elementary schools in February, 2013 as part of “Brainreach program”.

Digital Citizenship and Educational Technology T. Avrith

• Continued to work with Beaconsfield High School Infinity Program.• Presented to;

o Educational Services Consultants on getting’ “Google-Y.” o Harnessing the Power of Social Media (bit.ly/ownuridentity) to

the entire grade 9 at JRHS. o Teachers and Consultants with Sue Connery on “Digital Tools to

help Get You Organized.”• Visited Facebook Headquarters in California with McGill

University’s Define the Line Team to present the Digital CitizenshipProgram.

Educational Technology S.Connery• Supported the Lindsay Quantum initiative: they have become

very independent and it is wonderful to see Quantum’ssuccess

• 21st Century support o iPads in the classroom at Beacon Hill, Birchwood, Westparko Smartboard training for elementary library technicians

as well as teachers and daycare staff at St.Anthony o DCP presentation at St.Edmunds

• Participated in the preparation and organization of the MathOlympics with Sophie Lussier and Chantal Brunet. Theevenings were very successful events.

• Judge at Lindsay’s Science Fair: a very successful event with alarge number of submissions.

• Began 1:1 teacher training at Westwood Sr. with Barry Hannahin preparation for next year. The teachers are veryenthusiastic and engaged.

Science and Technology K. Davey• A project for promoting 21st century learning in physics

classrooms is underway. Coordinated a meeting for secondaryand CEGEP physics teachers at Dawson College. Participantsshared ideas on how we can engage students in understandingphysics through the use of different 21st century tools. Thephysics teachers will continue to meet to develop classroomactivities.

• The development of June examinations for secondary scienceand technology continued. Teacher teams met to develop andvalidate questions.

• Ongoing support was provided for curriculum mappingprojects at John Rennie High School and Lindsay Place HighSchool.

• Continued to support school teams with reflecting on datafrom June 2012 secondary 4 results.

• Judged projects at the Lakeside Academy and Macdonald HighSchool Science Fairs.

Mathematics F. Redivo• Continued and expanded the diagnostic testing in one high

school in support of the action plan aimed at improving CST-4 year-end math results looking at both quantitative andqualitative data.

• Continued work with teachers creating the June TS-5 C2 exam• Continued work with a PLC of math teachers at one high

school• Participated in professional development in Web 2.0 tools• Began the preparation of workshops to be offered in February

English Language Arts J. Le Blanc

• Examined results of literacy assessments at BHS. Helpeddetermine instructional goals for grade 7 ELA teachers

• Analyzed data and created a report for administrators andcommissioners on perceptions of Success in the English Sector

• Planned and animated workshop for ESD consultants onGoogle Docs and Google Forms

• Chaired meetings with John Abbott professors and ESDconsultants on students transitioning to CEGEP

• Worked with a team of MacDonald HS teachers on LayeredCurriculum method inspired by the latest on brain research

Dance R. Binet

• Coordinated and prepared workshops for Spotlight on the Arts2012. Thank you to all the LBPSB teachers who presented &participated in workshops, and for making this year’sConference a true success.

• Continue to attend DEEN (MAD2) meetings and collaboratewith members of the arts community.

• Attended Regional Art Committee meeting and continue tocollaborate on projects with members.

• Accompanied PCHS students to the Musé des beaux Arts.• Coordinating along with Suzanne Nesbitt a linguistic project

known as Péliq-An between students from Beurling Academyand Monseigneur Richard High Schools.

Leadership R. Binet

• Continue to coordinate and collaborate with teachers andstudents for this year’s Board Camp.

• Continue to attend meetings and collaborate with studentleaders in coordinating events for Central Students’ Committee.The students are working very hard in planning for this year’sannual LBPSB Winter Dance taking place February 2nd.

• Chaired Leadership and Student Life (LSL) meeting for theadvisors and leadership teachers.

• Accompanied PCHS students to the Jewish Eldercare centre forHanukah Celebrations with the seniors, part of theIntergenerational Project.

• Science Fair judge for Lindsay Place High School, LakesideAcademy and Macdonald High Schools.

• Met with the coordinator of Lower Canada College for theDestiny Quebec Conference to encourage participation ofstudents from our schools.

French M. Delsemme

• Ended our SLAM poetry tournée in High Schools on December6th.

• Offered a follow up workshop on The SLAM POETRY CONTEST(to be held on March 26th) to participating teachers in orderfor them to prepare their students for the contest.

• Initiated a 3-day working session with FSL teachers in order toproduce pedagogical activities, using illustrated albums.

• Attended 2 sessions at MELS to validate end-of-year sec. 5exams.

• Attended Professional Development session organized byDEEN on video-conferencing.

• Received approval from Admin. Group to start a longitudinalstudy, aiming at measuring the progress of grade 7 studentsusing the writing portfolio.

• Went ahead with the logistics of the longitudinal study: grade7 students were tested in all our High Schools (several visits toschools to further explain the process of collecting therequired data).

• Started the validation process of our sec. 4 EvaluationSituation on energizing drinks.

• Attended the December Language Network meeting.• Presented a workshop to the secondary schools’ librarians

with regards to literacy for boys, in partnership with the EMSBFrench consultant, Roxane Bérubé.

• Contributed to the launching of the BIBLIOGARS sections thatwill be implemented in our libraries. An initiative aiming atimproving our High School boys’ literacy skills through aselection of French books appealing to them.
