This world is overflowing with variety of people including large number of privileged and under privileged groups. Many of them may not have sufficient food or good clothes to wear while some others lead a life of luxury sometimes not knowing how

and where to spend their resources. Good schools for children, restaurants for a change and many other life styles are never a priority for the so called under privileged. . But still they have something making them special which is their positive attitude towards life and no one can change it. No one has the power to take away from them this amazing positive attitude which makes them special and respectful.

Physically challenged people are yet another example as they see the world differently. Their attitude makes them different and they live like a legend showing us how to live life completely, even if they do not have everything in life. They are the real heroes.

Jessica Cox the first female pilot without hands, holding an unrestricted driving license is also a scuba diver. Born with no hands, Jessica has an amazing positive attitude with a blend of hard work and strong determination which led her to be a champion in life. She is a motivational speaker with a bachelor degree in psychology. It was only her positive attitude which made her a special winner in life.

The tea seller at a station with a meagre income is of special mention here. He was offered thousand rupees by a customer after drinking a cup of tea. He refused to accept such a large amount in spite of knowing it would make a big difference in his life. Instead he chose to be honest and was ready to accept only what was due to him. He clearly believed that money is not everything but self respect is much above money. Money can give luxury to buy what we want but money cannot make you Humble, Honest, Helpful, Kind or Real.

If one has good attitude it sparkles in his life rich qualities. Positive attitude makes one real and down to earth. It gives luxury to touch someone’s life and make their life beautiful. It helps to bring a smile on someone’s face.

What helps to possess such qualities?- Be always thankful, helpful, appreciative and supportive trying to bring a smile on the face of at least one person a day. Always remember, Money cannot give you a good attitude, or, Money cannot make you a person of good attitude, BUT, “Attitude can definitely make you rich”.

Lakshmikanth PPurchase Head – IndiaLife is a sequence of negotiations.

We negotiate every day from wakeup time till we sleep, from

birth to death it is an ongoing process. Successful negotiation is an art form that comes naturally to some, but must be learned by many. Learning to negotiate effectively with ourselves is the fundamental theory to our own success. Better results, stronger relationships, and most of life’s deeper rewards come from learning to negotiate with ourselves. In the present world, we win some battles and lose others. It’s important that we learn to manage with the frustrations and discouragements to become more effective in the battles of tomorrow.

Negotiation is also about: a) Building b) Maintaining c) Improving relationships. Few steps for successful negotiation are, 1. Commitment – the respective parties will always have a target in mind. Don’t become self-centred - focus on the success and satisfaction of both the parties.2. Consider needs of everybody involved- well practiced negotiators

send a message of respect for the other party’s concerns helping to reduce egos and allowing more flexible communication.3. Establish the playing field - understand and establish the real needs of the other party. Try to learn their minimum price or objective. Many negotiators have successfully purchased items at a much lower rate than anticipated cost because they have done their homework well.4. Be open minded and flexible - perhaps the potential seller or buyer may not purely be driven by price. But different payment terms can be more of an attraction to them.5. Bargain in an ethical way -Never start with a ridiculous offer asking for more than you expect. Allow some room for conversation remembering you may need his or her cooperation in the future. Pave the way for an amicable discussion ahead.6. Ask for a deal - Negotiation in its very nature is a give and take process. If you have something to satisfy the other party’s requirement, ask for something in return, it maybe future business, a preferred supply agreement or anything beneficial.

Traits of a Great NegotiatorLike everything that is done well, a great negotiator will demonstrate skills that can enhance the final outcome of a negotiation process including: Empathy, Responsibility, Respect, Flexibility, Fairness, Personal Integrity, Patience, Self-discipline, Sense of Humour and commitment.

Digital EraDigital Era helps us to place orders and buy various products online with the use of gadgets like mobiles, PC, laptops etc. Here the negotiation is done in comparison of different sites and providers and the sale is done directly through online sites. This helps a layman to make purchases at a reasonable rate. At the same time in the case of corporate and enterprises bulk purchases from one or two vendors will be the best way to quote profitable prices and get after sales services.

Dear Colleagues,

The New Year brings promise, excitement and New Year’s Resolutions.

But I’m not going to talk about any resolution that is about losing weight, starting your exercise plan or one of the other common personal resolutions people make. Rather, this is a practical and timeless list of resolutions you can make to create more confidence, be more engaged and happier yourself.

These resolutions are about your behaviours and habits and how they affect your performance and the productivity as a whole. Taken individually, they can make a difference in your results; collectively, they will change your level of business success forever.

Four Small Resolutions for this New Year:1. Set realistic goals.Goal setting is a valuable habit - if the goals lead to success rather than distress. Make a New Year’s resolution that the

Johnee Praveen RChief People Officer

New Year’s Resolution

goals you set will be goals that are achievable, rather than unrealistic pipe dreams that are so far out of reach they only lead to frustration.

2. Don’t make do; get a new one.

Is there a piece of equipment in your office that’s interfering with your success or something that you lack that’s making your working life harder? Whether it’s an old fax machine that’s a pain to use, or the need for a new employee to lighten your work load, make a New Year’s resolution to stop putting off getting what you need. The irritation of making do just isn’t worth it. 3. Put time for you on your calendar. In Schedule Time for You, I point out how important it is to take the time to recharge and refresh yourself; a healthy work-life balance demands time out. All work and no play is a recipe for mental and physical disaster. So if you have trouble freeing up time to do the things you enjoy, write time regularly into your schedule to

“meet with yourself ” and stick to that commitment. If you won’t invest in yourself, who will?4. Learn something new. What you choose to learn may be directly related to your business or completely unrelated. Learning something new will add to your skills and add a new dimension of interest to your life. Depending on how you choose to learn, you may meet new and interesting people, who may become customers, colleagues, or friends.

Like many New Year’s resolutions, this list may seem a bit daunting. Remember that they don’t necessarily require any special skills. All it requires is a change in mindset and most likely a change in habits.

Hoping each one of you will at least give it a try on the resolution, I wish everyone a Prosperous and Glorious New Beginning-New Year!!

12 Xpressions - January 2016

• “Excellence is an art won by training and habituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtue or excellence, but rather we have those because we have acted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” - Aristotle

• “Today is yesterday’s pupil.” - Benjamin Franklin

• If you have a choice of taking two paths, always take the more daring of the two. Calculated risk taking often produces extraordinary results.

• Every day, get away from the noise, the crowds and the rush and spend a few hours alone in peaceful introspection, deep reading or simple relaxation.

• That which any person who has walked this Earth has achieved, you can achieve with the right mental attitude, perseverance and industry. Limiting thoughts and weak mental images must be banished. One’s focus must be on the attainment of goals that are truly important.

• Get into the habit of memorizing beautiful poetry. Not only will it be a great source of entertainment but it will quickly lift your intellectual functions to a higher level by improving your memory, concentration and mental agility.

• Keep your words soft and arguments hard.

• Break the worry habit by putting things in perspective and laughing over small setbacks. Repeat to yourself that “this will soon pass”. Then take a sheet of paper, write out the worry on your mind. Allot a certain period of time to think on it, isolate the precise problem and formulate a powerful line of attack. By this practical technique, your negative, energy sapping habit will soon be a faint memory of the past. .

• Be known as that person who goes the extra mile. The person who works longer than others. The one who takes on the extra assignments and follows them through with great success. Be the person who always has concerns about others and who makes family members feel truly special. Be a standout, the one with a balance in both personal and professional excellence. Be a star that shines brightly for all others to admire.

• Become a committed and sincere networker. Cultivate new friendships. You will truly be surprised where people end up over the years and how small, kind gestures will help you later on in life. Treat everyone who crosses your path as if they are the most important person in your world. You will certainly meet with great success.

From the map-litho age to the digital age, we have been moving at indeed an amazing

pace. Starting from scriptures across palm-leaves to the paper and then to the introduction of machines incorporating the use of high-end modern technology, human era has been leaping across the timeline creating what we call, “History”. This is the very same history which has set us at our path to where we are now.

In the beginning, UAE Exchange was also the same. There was a time when we were employing papers for almost everything done in our businesses; be it correspondence, business related documents or even a small financial transaction. A time when a remittance took nearly 2 months to reach the designated person!.

Now with changing times, we have transformed into a faster, digital generation. We have started using soft wares powered by nothing short of the modern technologies of the 21st century. This has reduced the processing time and is also environment friendly as the usage of papers has been reduced substantially.

The technology is now developing so fast and is becoming more compact that the migration from the old desktop PC’s to Pocket Computers (Mobile phones/Tablets/Phablets and PDA’s) has become inevitable.

The current trending mobile

BD trEAtS

platform, The Android OS powered by Google inc. is but an example of the changing trends in the next generation of mobile computing. It’s application “Play Store”, is a world of wonder, to the young and old alike. Featuring millions of applications, Games and Entertainment each specific to its own purpose.

Some of these applications have become a part of our daily lives by lending us a support in our day-to-day activities both at work and at home. A few applications have been a part of my life and have expanded my horizon in mobile computing.Evernote: It is a business application which synchronizes across devices and is available across all platforms be it the iOS, Windows or of course, the Android. It allows us to carry our work wherever we go. Available as free with limited workspace or paid with much higher cloud storage.Android device manager: Sometimes we have this rather uncanny habit of misplacing our smart phones, well the days of “not finding” it are over. The android device manager is a soft ware provided by Google directly accessible with any device having the Google login in it. This facility enables us to locate the phone wherever it is, provided it is connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or packet data. You can make your phone ring, Lock the phone or erase the phone just by sending a request. With it, you can also lock-down your device if it gets

stolen. In short, Mobile Thieves!! For all those who think this is a strange topic, have I got news for you... It ain’t a strange

header at all. In fact, this is what happens in our daily lives.

Thinking about the same, I remember an incident which happened a while ago. I was on a journey from Thrissur to Palakkad when I met this youngster, sitting next to me. Having a cool & composed character, he was busy watching a movie on his mobile. Looking at him, I felt amused in a most peculiar way. When he removed his Headphones, I asked him if I could take the window seat which he agreed upon happily.

We switched places and he smiled at me upon which I too returned the gesture. I guess he felt he was on a friendly turf because he struck up a conversation with me. I felt at ease talking with him and after a while we grazed upon the topic of work. He informed me that he was in media field and doing advertisements. This

piped up my interest in him even further. After all, the main purpose of an advertisement is nothing but........ Marketing!!

After conversing with him for a while I realized that the topic seemed as appealing to him as it was to me. I shared a few of my opinions and he gave me a couple or more ideas. The journey went on and during a break in our keen conversation I made a call to my family, looking out the window, while enjoying the wind, lapping on my face. After my call, I looked back to the boy who was extending a packet of Chocolate Cookies towards me with a glowing smile on his face saying, “Try it sir, I am sure you will not be disappointed”.

Not wanting to tarnish his pleasant approach, I accepted a cookie and took a bite at it. It tasted wonderful! I asked him the name and price of the cookie. He passed the cookie box towards me for a closer look. While I was examining it, he received an

“important” call and I fell back to my thoughts.

I looked out the window at the breaking dawn and the magnificent sunrise wondering... “Isn’t it a type of advertising? The simple gesture of passing a packet of delicious cookies to a person with a smile.”Think about it...

Two complete strangers, a meeting – unexpected, conversation – unprecedented. Having experienced the product which was new to me, giving a smile which was warm and sweet; he created a lasting impression of the cookie in my mind within such a short time

“Advertisement & Sales, the two mutually related aspects of life, one cannot exist without the other, but then again, we can’t exist without either.”

With a renewed enthusiasm on my new perception, My journey continued on ...

We discuss far and wide on Global warming and its effects but are we fully aware that we ourselves are responsible for Global warming which leads to drastic climate changes?

Global warming and climate change are terms for the observed century-scale rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system and its related effects. Multiple lines of scientific evidence show that the climate system is warming. Scientific understanding of global warming is increasing. Future climate change and associated impacts will differ from region to region around the globe. Anticipated effects include warming global temperature, rising sea levels, changing precipitation, and expansion of deserts in the subtropics. Warming is expected to be greater over land than over the oceans and greatest in the Arctic, with the continuing retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice. Other likely changes include more frequent extreme weather events including

heat waves, droughts, heavy rainfall with floods and heavy snowfall; ocean acidification; and species extinctions due to shifting temperature regimes. Effects significant to humans include the threat to food security from decreasing crop yields and the abandonment of populated areas due to rising sea levels.

On 12 November 2015, NASA scientists reported that human-made carbon dioxide (CO2) continues to increase above levels not seen in hundreds of thousands of years: currently, about half of the carbon dioxide released from the burning of fossil fuels remains in the atmosphere and is not absorbed by vegetation and the oceans. Heavy rainfall with floods is already mentioned as features of global warming. Moreover the greed and selfish nature of man make the situation still worse. The green house effect is no more a boon for vegetation but a curse to our surroundings.

Chennai flood is a typical example of mismanagement and over exploitation. Arrival of the North-East monsoons every year is nothing new to the Eastern Coast. Only that the quantity of rainfall varies depending upon the depressions and pressure variations developed in the Bay of Bengal due to various factors which includes global warming. Here it needs to be highlighted that variation in rainfall is very much expected just like any other coastal region. But it was just lack of planning, careless and selfish use of resources etc which led to the disastrous situation. There is no doubt the devastating overflow was ‘MANMADE’.

Global warming and green house effect are closely related.

The greenhouse effect is the process by which absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in a planet’s atmosphere warm its lower atmosphere and surface.

The very recent Floods in northern

United Kingdom, South America and New York were all due to global warming. Activities of man are solely responsible for the situation. Since the beginning of industrialisation the temperature difference between the hemispheres has increased due to melting of sea ice and snow in the North. Average arctic temperatures have been increasing at almost twice the rate of the rest of the world in the past 100 years; however arctic temperatures are also highly variable. Although more greenhouse gases are emitted in the Northern than Southern Hemisphere this does not contribute to the difference in warming because the major greenhouse gases persist long enough to mix between hemispheres.

Who is responsible and who has to mend or restore the damage. Lives lost can never be re-instated. Progress and development go hand in hand and it is a dream to all developing nations just as home is a dream for any normal human being. The planning and pains taken are tremendous. Every stage of work proceeds with sanctions from responsible higher authorities. Such procedures are helpful to prevent unhealthy constructions which could later turn out to be the major cause for disasters. At this juncture it is vital to bear in mind that the magnitude of cooperation from the public is central.

Constructions with no proper drainage system, not considering the slope of land, not sufficient breathing space between and within the buildings etc are just few to be mentioned. True to mention, planning will become a failure without sincere cooperation from the people.

Government, people, necessities, planning, cooperation etc should strike a balance in harmony with each other. Blaming one another is easy but cooperating to make things happen is sometimes a bit uncomfortable. It is

the responsibility of the Governments to strictly abide by the set norms and stop trespassers.

Both the Public and the Government has to obtain equal responsibility for the use and misuse of any resources. Accumulation of waste and junk are all reasons for environmental imbalance which again turns out to be severe cause for global warming and drastic climate change. No man often ‘Use and Throw’ a house but they do so with many of the accessories in it contaminating the surroundings. In India, even today disposal of domestic waste is a problem. It is not lack of awareness on the pros and cons of this issue but it is just ’WHY ME?’ and ‘WHY NOT THE OTHERS?

Despite awareness on the possible disasters, man is selfish in using the natural resources which is a Gift for our sustenance. Attitude change and positive thinking should be adopted by every man and let this be the message to the younger generation. Let us practice planning, cooperation, responsibility, concern and develop a ‘Comfort Zone’ by emerging positive energy around us and impart these positive qualities to the coming generation where life will be smoother and we can reduce disasters.

who is responsible and who has to mend or restore the damage. Lives lost can never be re-instated. Progress and development go hand in hand and it is a dream to all developing nations just as home is a dream for any normal human being”

2016 has begun; let’s make 2016 the best new year of our life. Start a new chapter in our lives.

It doesn’t matter what has happened in our past that is already history.

Learn from the past and start making improvements instead of doing the same old things day after day and expecting different results. That’s called insanity. Our goal for the New Year should be to make small daily improvements and strive to make tomorrow better than it was yesterday. • If we just make a 1% improvement each day, we will be 365% better in just one year. • We already know what we have to do; we just have to do it. It is easy to do, but it also easier not to do.

• It’s easier to sit on the couch and watch TV than go exercise. It’s easier to reach for the junk food instead of healthy food. • It’s easier to stay in our comfort zone than try to experience new things. It’s easier to say we can’t do it than even give it a try. • It’s easier to be negative than positive. It’s easier to be sad and depressed than happy and cheerful. • But what if we start doing what is right and what we need to do, rather than what’s easy. • Yes it might be challenging and seem so difficult at times but it will only make us stronger and better. • We all have good days and we all have bad days. The good days are great and the bad days are horrible.

Resolutions 2016:Message for 2016

Aditya KumarRegional Audit Head - Punjab

• When we have great days, we are grateful and celebrate. On bad days, we need to learn from the experience, shake it off and move on. • A set back is a set up for a comeback. • When I have bad days, the days I have self-limiting beliefs, I don’t dwell and tell everyone how bad my day was. • I try to change my thoughts as fast as I can. Now if I catch myself thinking negative, I hurry up and try to think positive. Where our emotions go is where our energy flows. We get what we focus on. We are what we think about all day long. What really helped me over the years to get through the tough and hard times is my own optimistic inspirations i.e. Believing Myself.

VG NAIR wrItES

“There is nothing impossible in life. If there is a will there is a way, may be

a saying used very frequently and repeatedly, but still it’s very powerful.

The following interesting story of Bhagirath from Hindu epic will help establish this statement.”

As per Hindu tradition, it was King Bhagiratha’s austerities and desire to free the souls of his ancestors that brought Holy River Ganga from heaven to earth. One of the most important reasons why many people want to be cremated on the banks of Holy Ganga and want their ashes to be immersed in Ganga is that they will attain Moksha or liberation from cycle of birth and death.

The term “Bhagiratha Prayathnam” indicates, it was Bhagiratha’s extraordinary effort to bring the waters of Ganga. In our Indian vernacular languages any super human effort is also referred to as

Bhagirath got Ganga to Earth

Xpressions - January 2016 17

“Bhagiratha Prayathnam”.Bhagirath was a prince whose father

did not have a peaceful death. He was told that unless he could put some holy water of Ganga on his father’s ashes there would be no peace for the dead man’s soul.

He prayed to Ganga and she said he could take the water in a sieve because his father had been so evil and this was the best she would suggest. Since he could not take the water that far he had to invoke divine intervention. Then he did penance (tapasya) for ten years standing on one leg till Lord Vishnu appeared and told him to take Lord Shiva’s help to placate Ganga because she was quite aggressive and could cause a deluge in the world.

So he prayed for another ten years to Lord Shiva who appeared and said he would help break the fall of Ganga if she agreed to come down.

So he prayed another five years to Ganga and told her Lord Shiva

would help in avoiding the torrent if she came down through his hair. She agreed although it took a bit of time because Lord Shiva also had a score to settle with Ganga and made her disappear in his hair for some time.

Bhagirath was desperate. He prayed to Lord Shiva to release Ganga so that he could perform the final rites for his father. Because of his devotion and perseverance Ganga was released and came out of GauMukh.

As rightly quoted by Mr.Nelson Mandela – “It always seems impossible until it is done”.

Humayun’s tomb is the tomb of the Mughal Emperor Humayun son of Babur

the first Mughal Emperor in Delhi, India and was the first garden tomb on the Indian sub-continent, commissioned by his beloved first wife Bega Begum in 1569-70. It is located in Nizamuddin, East Delhi close to the Purana Qila (Old Fort). Mirak Mirza Ghiyas was the unique Persian architect chosen by Bega Begum to design the tomb. The tomb was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 and since then has undergone extensive restoration work. Besides the main tomb enclosure of Humayun, several smaller monuments dot the pathway leading up to it, including one that even pre-dates the main tomb itself, by twenty years. The complex encompasses the main tomb of the Emperor Humayun, which houses the graves of Bega Begum herself and many other Mughals.

Humayun’s tomb embodies a leap in Mughal architecture along with the Charbagh garden draped in typical Persian style which had been never

INSIGHT

seen in India before and this set a precedent for successive Mughal architecture. Turkish and Mughal rule in the Indian subcontinent, also introduced Central Asian and Persian styles of Islamic architecture in the region, and by the late 12th century early monuments in this style were appearing in and around Delhi. While the prevailing style of architecture was trabeate, employing pillars, beams and lintels, this brought in the arcuate style of construction, with its arches and beams, by incorporating elements of Indian architecture, especially Rajasthani architecture including decorative corbel brackets. The high rubble built enclosure is entered through two lofty double-storied gateways on the west and south, 16 metres high with rooms on either side of the passage and small courtyards on the upper floors. Six-sided stars that adorn the main gateway on the west are also seen on the iwan of the main tomb structure, though it has been used as ornamental cosmic symbol. The tomb built of rubble masonry and red sandstone, uses white marble as

a cladding material. It stands on a vaulted terrace eight-meter high and spread over 12,000m². It is essentially square in design, though chamfered on the edges to appear octagonal, to prepare ground for the design of the interior structure. The plinth made with rubble core has fifty-six cells all around, and houses over 100 gravestones. Plus, the entire base structure is on a raised platform, a few steps high.

Inspired by Persian architecture; the tomb was the first Indian building to use the Persian double dome on a high neck drum, and is topped by high brass finial ending in a crescent,

common in Timurid tombs. The ‘double-layered’ dome has its outer layer which supports the white marble exterior, while the inner part gives shape to the cavernous interior volume. As a contrast to the pure white exterior dome, rest of the building is made up of red sandstone, with white and black marble and yellow sandstone detailing, to relieve the monotony.

The symmetrical and simple design on the exterior is in sharp contrast with the complex interior floor plan, of inner chambers, which is a square ‘nine fold plan’, where eight two-storied vaulted chambers radiate from the central,

double-height domed chamber. Underneath this white dome in a domed chamber where lies the central octagonal sepulchre containing a single cenotaph, that of the second Mughal Emperor, Humayun wherein the head is placed to the north, while the face is turned sideways towards Mecca. The real burial chamber of the Emperor however lies further away in an underground chamber, exactly beneath the upper cenotaph, accessible through a separate passage outside the main structure, which remains mostly closed to visiting public

This burial technique along with pietra dura, is an important legacy of the Indo-Islamic architecture, and flourished in many later mausoleums of the Mughal Empire, like the Taj Mahal, where again we find twin cenotaphs and exquisite ‘pietra dura’ craftsmanship.

An English merchant, William Finch during his visit in 1611, describes the rich interior furnishing of the central chamber. He mentioned the presence of rich carpets, and a shamiana, a small tent above the cenotaph, which was covered with a pure white sheet and with copies of the Quran in front along with his sword, turban and shoes.

The fortunes of the once famous Charbagh (Four-square) gardens, which spread over 13 hectares surrounding the monument, changed repeatedly over the years after its construction as the expensive upkeep of the garden proved impossible for many reasons. By the early 18th century, the once lush gardens were replaced by vegetable. However, the capture of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar during the Indian Rebellion of 1857 together with the premises meant that the monument’s worst days lay ahead, as the British took over Delhi completely. In 1860, the Mughal design of the garden was replanted to a more English garden-style, with circular beds replacing the fours central water pools on the axial pathways and trees profusely planted in flowerbeds. This fault was

corrected in early 20th century, when on Viceroy Lord Curzon’s orders the original garden were restored in a major restoration project between 1903–1909.

During the Partition of India, in August 1947 the Purana Qila together with Humayun’s Tomb became major refugee camps for Muslims migrating from Pakistan. These camps stayed open for about five years, and caused considerable damage not only to the extensive gardens, but also to the water channels and the principle structures. Eventually, to avoid vandalism, the cenotaphs within the mausoleum were encased in brick. In the coming years, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) took on responsibility for the preservation of heritage monuments in India, and gradually the building and its gardens were restored. An important phase in the restoration of the complex, started around 1993, when the monument was declared a World Heritage Site. This brought new interest to its restoration, and a detailed research and excavation process began under the support of the Aga Khan Trust and the ASI, culminating in 2003, when much of the complex, and gardens were finally restored, with its historic fountains running once again after several centuries of disuse. The restoration has been a continuous process ever since.

The entire tomb and the garden is enclosed within high rubble walls on three sides, the fourth side was meant to be the river Yamuna, which has since shifted course away from the structure. The central walkways terminate at two gates: a main one in the southern wall, and a smaller one in the western wall. It has two double-storey entrances, the West gate which is used now, while the South gate now remains closed. The central water channels appear to be disappearing beneath the tomb structure and reappearing on the other side in a straight line, suggesting the Quranic verse, which talks of rivers flowing beneath the ‘Garden of Paradise’

SHE

World now started recognizing the “She” in every group, encouraging

them to take over the prominent positions overruling the gender discrimination. Potential and brilliance has become the factor of acceptance for positioning women in prime roles. An old belief, leadership is the legacy of men has been replaced with great personalities like Indira Gandhi, Prathiba Patel, Hilary Clinton and many more.

Research studies signify that women are inherent financial savers and calculate resources considering future needs. Entrepreneurship has attained new phase under the leadership of women. Arundhati Bhattacharya, Chairperson of Sate Bank of India, Chandha Kochhar, Managing Director and Chief

executive officer of ICICI Bank have bought innovative changes in the banking and financial sector in India. Women are considered as good decision makers, as they form a decision considering variables scrutinizing each and every facet.

Criticism generates emphasizing the feminine aspects of motherhood and security issue, pulling back her to be in role of home engineer. Maternity & nurturing has been repeatedly spoken for discouraging the talents and skills in young leaders and motivators. It’s the will and determination that lead every individual to accomplish the goal, for an optimist hindrances in the path are revitalizing factor to pursue the will. The proverb “If there is a will thee is a way” portrays the fact a potential mind with a hard goal cannot be

beaten up. Great mastermind Albert Einstein

has told that “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” Thoughts can change the world to be the best place to live. It’s not the gender to be prioritized, value the skills and potential in individuals for a better transformation.

SIGNIFICANT EvENtS of 2015

2015- International Year of Light and International Year of SoilsThe International years are sponsored by UNESCO and 2015 was designated as the International Year for Light and Soil. The resolution was adopted by the General Assembly on December 20, 2013 to raise awareness and recognize the importance of light and soil which are topics of issues and importance in the present world.

Global economic recovery remains slowWhile growth is strongest in developing countries, it is still slower than during the pre-crisis period. Despite indications of recovery, the global economy remains in a fragile state. There is continuous political and social unrest in the Southern European countries. After reaching a plateau in 2008, global trade is showing improvement now, but is still trending at or below the average for the previous few decades. Unemployment remains high in Europe (12%), which consumes one-third of the world’s traded goods. The US is seeing faster growth than Europe, but remains in a fiscal deadlock over its debt ceiling. China’s annual growth rate, while high compared to most countries, has been slowing in recent years. Overall, the global economy is recovering, but frustratingly slowly compared to previous such crises. Some of the most rapidly growing industries now include agriculture, alternative energy, biotechnology, computer systems design, e-commerce, healthcare, mining and scientific/technical consulting.

The Eurasian Union is formed The Eurasian Union (EAU) is a political and economic union consisting of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. In November 2011, the presidents of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia agreed on a target of establishing the EAU by 2015. . A treaty to enlarge the group to include Armenia was signed in October 2014 and Kyrgyzstan followed in December 2014, with all five members officially establishing the Union in January 2015. It was speculated that future expansion of the Union might allow membership for other countries with close historical or cultural ties – such as Finland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, China and Mongolia, incorporating them into a common state body with Russian as the common language of communication and economic cooperation.

The first large-scale solar updraft towers are operationalThe first large-scale solar updraft towers are completed in 2015.* Built by EnviroMission – a start-up company in Arizona, USA – they stand 800 metres in height, over twice as tall as the Empire State Building. Each generates 200 megawatts of clean, renewable energy – enough to serve 150,000 homes – and equivalent to removing 220,000 polluting cars from the roads. The towers work by combining three old and proven technologies: the chimney effect, the greenhouse effect, and the wind turbine. Air is heated by the Sun and contained in a very large greenhouse-like structure around the base; the resulting convection causes air to rise up the chimney. This airflow then drives turbines, producing electricity. The advantages are: they can work in any weather, they can be built on useless and uninhabited land, and no resources are used other than air and sunlight, zero pollution and very little maintenance. This new technology offers hope for the future, coming at a time when the world faces an impending energy crisis.

Personal biometric scanners for online bankingThe United Kingdom is the first to offer Personal Biometric Scanners in 2015 for homes and remote offices globally. It was already used by many countries to improve banking security. These devices are initially provided to corporate clients,

but soon made available to regular consumers. Desktop card readers, phone authentication and PIN codes are no longer needed, as vein pattern recognition is both faster and more reliable. It is practically impossible to spoof or replicate – even more accurate than fingerprint ID – and the finger must be attached to a live human body in order for veins in the finger to be scanned. The process takes just two seconds, using a near-infrared (NIR) LED and monochrome CCD camera sensor to make the red pigment in blood (haemoglobin) absorb NIR light, with veins appearing as dark lines. No public record is kept, as the user’s pattern is stored on their SIM card only.

The Archival Disc format is launchedThe release of a new optical disc format with up to 300 GB capacity, jointly developed by Sony and Panasonic was another milestone for the year. For comparison, dual-layer Blu-rays can store up to 50 GB. Known as Archival Disc, it is initially aimed at industries like digital cinema (for storage of 4K/2160p video), broadcasters and cloud centres handling big data. The discs can withstand changes in temperature and humidity, in addition to dust and water, ensuring readability for at least 50 years. Future versions with capacities of 500 GB and 1 TB are planned.

New Horizons arrives at PlutoIn July 2015, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft performed a close flyby of Pluto, becoming the first mission in history to visit the distant world. This probe – launched in January 2006 – had travelled 3 billion km through space. At its closest approach, it flew 12,600 km (7,800 mi) above the surface, with a relative velocity of 13.8 km/s (49,600 km/h; 30,800 mph). The onboard cameras showed icy mountains reaching up to 11,000ft (3,300m) high, comparable to North America’s Rocky Mountains. Because of the vast distance between Pluto and Earth (radio communications took four and a half hours, even at the speed of light), it was only possible to return a faint signal at 1 or 2 kilobytes per second. It would therefore take over a year to transmit all of the images and data. New Horizons would continue to explore the Pluto system for five months.

Electric car ownership reaches 1 million worldwideThe number of electric cars on the world roads remained just 25,000 in 2010 whereas during the next five years the number has shot up to over a million by the end of 2015. The biggest electric car companies were Nissan, GM/Opel, Toyota, Tesla and Ford. Despite growing rapidly, electric cars still only accounted for a tiny percentage (0.1%) of the billion or so total cars in the world. The main factors limiting their uptake were the high cost. By the 2020s, wireless electricity is becoming a fairly common feature of urban centres and this further enhances the appeal of electric cars. With increasing concerns over energy and the environment – alongside breakthroughs in technology and cost – these vehicles have a bright future in the years and decades ahead.

The first self-regulating artificial heartUsing biomaterials and electronic sensors, French Professor Alain Carpentier engineered the first self-regulating artificial heart in 2013. The device weighed 900g, was roughly the same size as a real heart and could imitate its functions exactly. In a 10-hour operation, it was successfully implanted within a 75-year-old patient at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris. By 2015, after a period of clinical trials, it is available within the European Union, priced between 140,000 and 180,000 Euros (about US$190,000 to $250,000). Unlike previous versions, however, Carpentier’s invention was the first to be completely artificial and self-regulating.

The first solar aircraft to circumnavigate the globeLed by Swiss psychiatrist and aeronaut Bertrand Piccard (who co-piloted the first balloon to circle the world non-stop) and Swiss businessman André Borschberg the Solar Impulse is a Swiss long-range solar-powered aircraft project. Their aim was to achieve the first circumnavigation of the Earth by a piloted fixed-wing aircraft using only solar power. The aircraft began its flight from Abu Dhabi in March 2015 and the schedule was to return to Abu Dhabi in August 2015. But during the longest journey from Japan to Hawaii the thermal batteries experienced damage which had to be repaired. The solar impulse team stated that they will resume the mission in April 2016. Solar Impulse has the wingspan of a Boeing 747, but weighs just 2,300 kg (5,070 lb). It uses 17,000 solar cells to charge lithium batteries in daytime, allowing it to fly at night with virtually unlimited autonomy. Its maximum speed is 143 km/h (88 mph) and it features environmental support systems for cruising at an altitude of 12,000 metres (39,000 ft).

One of the most common health problems affecting mankind is heart disease.

In this era of high tension lifestyles Heart attacks and strokes are badly affecting the younger generation. The incidence of cardiovascular disease is estimated to reach a very high level within a span of a decade or two especially in India. One of the most widespread harms today is job induced anxiety. The young careerists of today including both men and women have to balance responsibilities at the office with their role at home, including spouse and children induced pressures.

Heart disease should not be considered as a disability but should be well thought out as an opportunity to change the lifestyle. It would be appropriate to discuss the causes of heart disease which would enable us to prevent such episodes. Accordingly heart disease is largely preventable. Often the causes are diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, family history, sedentary life style etc, if not controlled through proper checkups leads to high risk situations. Such risk factors can be substantially reduced by living the right way.

Stroke is yet another and second most important cause of death in this industrialized world. It is also the leading cause of adult handicap. It is rightly said ‘Prevention is better than

cure’ not only because it is cheaper but also because many conditions and diseases can easily be prevented but cannot be treated.

Smoking and excessive alcoholism are the most common preventable causes of disability. Stress management is a learning process which should be practiced at three levels repeatedly making one understand that smoking and alcoholism is for sure not the solution. 1. Identify the cause of your stress. 2. Take steps to change the circumstances. 3. Relearn ways to cope with stress in your everyday life. Reducing stress by training the mind and body to relax may be helpful to reduce or prevent heart attacks and stroke. Many techniques promote relaxation. Meditation and Yoga are two effective methods of repose.

Follow a healthy diet by avoiding or reducing oily & fried items, sugars, sweets, ghee, butter, pastries, chocolates, sweet cream, red meat, whole milk products, pickles, chips, organ meat (kidney, Liver, Brain) and junk food. Also eat more of Fresh vegetables, fruits, salads, black tea, grapes, oranges, One egg a day, butter milk, fish etc.

It would be ideal to keep a track of the ‘Don’ts and ‘Do’s’ in our daily routine which will take us to a healthy food diet. DON’Ts- Never overeat, avoid too much salt, eat slowly and

never rush through meals. DO’S- Drink plenty of water, include more of leafy vegetables, fresh fruits and salads and reduce intake of sweets and fatty foods.

Exercise is as important as food and sleep. It helps to maintain a healthy heart and reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Daily physical exercise for at least 20-30 minutes four times a week is very important. Brisk walking and vigorous exercises reduce the risk of heart attacks but should be practiced by building your activity gradually

The best sports for the heart are-Cycling, walking, jogging and swimming. Such activities improves heart performance by dilating the arteries, making the blood rich in oxygen, stabilizing blood pressure, burning excess calories and increasing good cholesterol level(HDL).

Live longer by looking on the brighter side of life. Recent reports have revealed that optimistic people live longer while pessimists are likely to suffer depressions, poor health and use mental and medical services frequently. Thus it is always advised to look at the brighter side and sideline the pain and difficulties of one’s day-to-day life.
