Every day is a new day with novel experiences whether be at home or in your work place. Change is

inevitable all through your life. In general there are changes happening within families and societies, only because experiences vary day to day, person to person, family to family, and society to society and so on.

Workplace is yet another area which is constantly experiencing change. No longer can you rely on past experience to provide your safety net for the future. No longer can you look at seniority as a comfort zone, or your guarantee that you will climb up the steps. Or, for that matter, that you can even stay on the stage where you are today. Even more to the point, the ladder is getting smaller and smaller as companies compress their structures. How do you ensure you are not compressed?

With trimming down, centralization, and concentration that are occurring in today’s corporate offices, even if you don’t want to advance, you are still affected. If you don’t change and adapt, you may end up being a statistic of downsizing, resizing, or right sizing. It doesn’t matter what the reorganizational process is called, the fact

CHANGE

is - you may not have a job if you say that you don’t want to move ahead.

Change will happen whether you are ready for it or not, or even if you try resisting it. Here it is important to check your chances of survival and understand the requirement for change in your workplace and prepare to face the situation rather than resist it. For this to happen be ready for the change yourself.

With technological advancements and global competition that all businesses face today, companies need to change the way they do business. Companies need employees who can adapt to change, who embrace change, who do not wait for change to hit them. They need employees who actually champion needed changes before the competition does.

If you are ready to accept and embrace change rather than resist it, you not only increase your chances of survival, but also that of your employer. Analyze how you react when change is introduced. Are you excited about it? It is not necessary that you blankly accept every change that comes along. What required is that you should tune yourself to be able to look at the brighter side rather than the disadvantages.

In order to move beyond how the change will affect you personally, you need to focus first on the advantages of the change. If you find you are resisting a new process, a new strategy, or a new way of doing business, a good question to ask is why the change is necessary. Once you understand the reasons for the change, you may then be able to see more clearly the benefits to your organization, and to yourself.

Be the Champion of Change and reap the benefits along with your organization.

Communiqué from our MDV George AntonyManaging Director

Dear Colleagues,

When our thrust and focus is towards making more and more profits, then all the

chances for quality gets diluted. Success and profits should come without quality dilution, keeping the basic intact. Quality: We have to be very clear and sure about the quality of the product or service that we deliver. Never ever compromise, always deliver the best of best so that the customer who receives the service becomes your brand ambassador and Business Development Manager. See the beauty of it, if all customers whom you serve become your BDM.Risk: Keep an eye on risk matters and do not compromise on this area for one drop. No point in losing all your earnings and savings in one day due to the lack of focus on risk areas or due to casual attitude. No point in blaming others after things go

wrong. Make corrections beforehand and avoid getting into such traps. KYC: It is always better to be strict in KYC matters. If we do that we are creating a deterrent for wrong intention customers. KYC details and mobile details of the customer should be correct all the time with none of your customers going without it while doing transactions. If you do that you can have peace of mind all the time. Customer Care: What a customer needs is your time and patient listening. If we listen to them and give right advice, then you are again creating Brand Ambassadors for yourself along with business promotions. Understand the customer requirement well and do your best. Vital Tips from CFOCA.Krishnan RDirector and Chief Financial Officer, India

Goods and Service Tax is being glorified as a system of taxation by which economy will take an upward swing and further it will ease the trade and industry with respect to the indirect tax system of the country. “Only one” indirect tax has to be paid by the trade and industry and all the other indirect taxes will be subsumed in GST.

EXISTING TAX STRUCTURE IN INDIA

IMPACT ON PRICING SYSTEM

What is GST?GST is a consumption based tax levied on sale, manufacture and consumption on goods & services at a national level. This tax will be substitute for all indirect tax levied by state and central government. Exports and direct tax like income tax, corporate tax and capital gain tax will not be affected by GST.

No GSTGST would apply to all goods other than crude petroleum, motor spirit, diesel, aviation turbine fuel and natural gas.

It would apply to all services barring a few to be specified. With the increase of international trade in services, GST has become a global standard. The proposed tax system will take the form of “dual GST” which is concurrently levied by central and state government. This will comprise of:

• CentralGST(CGST)whichwillbe levied by Centre

• StateGST(SGST)Whichwillbelevied by State

• IntegratedGST

Who will Collect and pocket taxes? For Intra State Transactions: In case of Intra State transactions, Seller collects both CGST & SGST from the buyer and CGST needs to be deposited with Central Govt. and SGST with State Govt.

ForInterStateTransactions:IntegratedGoodsandServiceTax(IGST)shallbeleviedonInterStatetransactionsofgoodsandserviceswhich are based on destination principle. Tax gets transferred to Importing state. More over it is proposed to levy an additional tax on supply of goods, not exceeding one percent, in the course of inter-state trade or commerce, to be collected by the Central Govt. for a period of two years, and assign to the States where the supply originates. Valuation of stock transfers to be determined. Exports and Supplies to SEZ units will be zero rated.

CPO writes...Prabakaran KAChief Product Officer India

Capital Account Convertibility (CAC)Convertibility of rupee means, converting foreign currencies into Indian rupees and vice-versa at the market determined exchange rate. Whether the Rupee is fully convertible, the answer is no. Rupee is fully convertible on Current account and to a great extent on Capital account transactions. As of now, there are certain restrictions on Capital Account convertibility i.e. For free movement of funds into the country and out of the country.

Full convertibility means, Indian rupee may be exchanged in the global foreign exchange market without any restrictions and government intervention in the entire process. At present, current account transactions are fully convertible whereas capital account transactions are partially convertible. Current account transactions relates to receipt/payment of the cost of goods/services exported/imported in such a way that it does not affect the liabilities/assets side of the Balance Sheet whereas in the case of Capital Account Transactions, the amount involved either creates a liability or asset as the payments are either received or paid not immediately; but after a certain period of time. The example of Capital Account Transactions is Import/Export of Goods/Services on credit basis, acceptance of deposits, lending/borrowing, investments etc.

BackdropIn 1990-91, the foreign exchange reserves of our country were hardly sufficient to meet our import requirements for 15 days leading to an unprecedented payments crisis and our country was about to be downgraded by IMF and other Credit Rating Agencies for the fear that India would have defaulted in its obligation to meet international financial commitments even though our country had never defaulted in its financial commitments. In order to give a powerful signal to the international community and as directed by the Government, RBI had appointed a Committee headed by Mr.S.S.Tarapore, then Deputy Governor to prepare a road map for full convertibility on capital account transactions.

Committee’s Preconditions/SignpostsCommittee had stipulated the following preconditions/signposts to move towards CAC:

(a) Fiscalconsolidation(b) Mandatedinflationtarget(c) Strengtheningoffinancialsystem(d) Assessingmacroeconomicindicators

on an ongoing basis such as Exchange Rate Policy, Balance of Payments position, Forex reserves etc.

CAC – Timing & Sequencing of Measures The Committee suggested various

measures for removal of sector-wise capital

controls in a phased manner such as for Corporates/Business, Residents/Non-Residents(Individuals),Banks(domestic/foreign),FinancialInstitutions,Financialmarkets – Foreign Exchange Market, Money Market, Government Securities Market, Gold and Participation in International Commodity markets etc.

The concerted efforts of Government and RBI resulted in bringing normalcy to the otherwise volatile market leading to strong fundamentals to the economy such aslowerinflation, appreciatinggrowthrate, more or less stable exchange rate etc and thereby regaining of the confidence of the international community which resulted into greaterinflowofforex.Indiawasabletoattract foreign exchange in such a way that from forex reserve which was just equivalent to 15 days import bill moved to the equivalent of more than 1 years import bill and India was branded as one of the fastest growing economy of the world.

Scenario as on todayThe burgeoning forex reserves which is nearing equivalent to USD400 million has posed one of the greatest challenge of managing. Today, India is the destination for investment for the entire world and we have the problem of plenty as far as deployment of the forex reserves. Almost all quantitative restrictions stand removed irrespective

After De-Monetisation, GST reforms....Full Convertibility not too far...

whether it is a Current Account or Capital Account transactions. RBI has only placed indicative limits for forex and has delegated powers to Banks/Authorised Persons to release foreign exchange.

Presently, under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme of RBI, Resident Individuals are allowed to remit abroad USD 2,50,000 per financial year for Current Account, Capital Account or a combination of both. Those who are in need of the above limit can approach RBI.

For legal entities such as Companies/Partnership Firms, borrowing from abroad has been made easy under the External Commercial Borrowing scheme whereas the companies are also permitted to invest abroad in the firm of establishing new business, acquiring an existing one or merging with another entity. Similarly, companies registered abroad are allowed to invest in India through the Automatic Route of Foreign Direct Investment Policy of RBI apart from its portfolio investment scheme to Individuals/Foreign Institutional Investors etc. Almost all the restrictions/controls have been removed thereby leading to ease of doing business. Resultantly, India continues to attract more foreign exchange than any other country in the world and continues to be branded as the investment destination to the world.

The FutureIndia continues to be the fastest growing economy in the world. The recent demonetization to unearth black money, subsuming of various taxes into one tax namely GST which will lead to a single domestic market will certainly lead to fall in the prices of goods/services, increase in GDP as well as the revenue of the government and thereby narrow down its fiscal deficit. This will allow the government to spend more on infrastructure which will lead to greater employment generation. However, our exports have not been matching with the imports leading to greater Capital Account Deficit which as of now is manageable mainly on account of fall in crude prices.

India is now integrated with the world economy and not insulated from others in case of disturbances elsewhere. The world economy is almost in shambles with fears ofconflictsinvariouspartsoftheworld.Weneed to keep on consolidating our position and manage the economy more prudently so as to face any challenge.

The overseas tour arranged by UAE Exchange from 30/6/2017 to 4/7/2017 was extremely enjoyable, interesting and crafted ever memorable for a life time. Suitable accommodation and delicious food made our trip more

interesting. It was so well planned that we could cover a large number of places within a limited time. The services of guides and transport conveniences need a special mention at this juncture. In comparison to our previous experiences with other companies and tour packages, we are happy to thank UAE Exchange for their outstanding services.

We are too happy to render our special thanks to Sreekuttan and Princy madam for all the support given for me and my friends who had travelled with me. Needless to say we were also happy to co-operate with the superb arrangements extended to us.

The online application option will make applying for Visitor visas easier and more convenient for Indian visitors to Australia.

Yet another vicious virus has attacked the cyber world; Petya Ransomware which is part of

a new wave of attacks .It has infected a huge number of computer servers across the world.

Attack on IndiaIn India, the ransomware has severely damaged the functions at one of the terminals of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust. The affected terminal was being controlled by AP Moller-Maersk. The Gateway Terminals India, which handles 1.8 million container units is operated by AP Moller-Maersk. The impact of this attack on external trade

resulted in seriously damaging the systems dealing with the cargo and ships at the largest port of the country.

WorldThe Petya ransomware has struck computer servers all across Europe which includes Ukraine and Russia, the critically affected countries. Even a few companies in the US and Western Europe were the victims of this malicious virus.

In Ukraine the affected sectors are government offices, energy companies, banks, cash machines, gas stations, and supermarkets, Ukrainian Railways, Ukrtelecom, and the Chernobyl power plant.

About Petya ransomwareAlmost similar to the Wannacry ransomware, Petya ransomware is a variation of the WannaCry cyber-attack. It follows the same pattern and locks up the data in the computer and immobilizes the services in the corporate sector. The origin of this attack is yet to be located. The ransom demanded for unlocking the file is $300 Bitcoins (a type of digital currency). In Ukraine a third party software update was used and it is believed that the virus originated from the update. This is the reason why Ukraine is the worst affected.

The real name Sundarban in Bengali language is ‘beautiful forest’. ‘Shundor’ means

beautiful and b’bon’ means forest. The name may have originated from the Sundari trees (the mangrove species that are found in Sundarbans in very large numbers.

The Sundarban forest lies in the vast delta of the Bay of Bengal formed by the combined flow of the Ganges, Hooghly, Padma, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers across southern Bangladesh. The Sundarbans freshwater forest swamp which is flooded in seasons lie inland from the mangrove forests on the coastal border. The forest covers 10,000 square kilometres of which about 6,000 square kilometres are in Bangladesh. It has been declared as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1997.

The Sundarbans is interconnected by a variety network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests.

Because of this interconnection all the area in the forest could be accessed by boat. The area is known for the Bengal tiger as well as numerous fauna including species of birds, spotted deer, crocodiles and snakes. For centuries the fertile soils of the delta have been intensively used by humans for agriculture and the forest area is shrinking day by day.

The past few decades have seen the alarming deterioration of the Mangrove forest cover in the Indian Sundarbans. The frail ecosystem of this area is the home of Royal Bengal tiger and other species of animals and also accommodates around 5 million people. Jadavpur University in its study has revealed that, from 1986 approximately 125 square kilometres of forest cover has disappeared. The continuation of this process is a serious ecological threat.

The main reason for the irreversible phenomena is the climatic changes that have occurred all across the

world. The rising sea level by 4 mm a year creates very severe threat to the mangrove forest. The mean sea level rise is considered a driving factor for coastal erosion, coastal flooding, increase in the number of tidal creeks and losing land.

A minimal inflow of freshwater is necessary for the luxuriant growth of mangroves. Decrease in freshwater inflow results change in mangrove succession where freshwater loving species of mangroves are replaced by salt-water loving ones. This immediate impact of salinity will also have negative impact on the fishing community.

Nature was given to man to use it meticulously and never to exploit and destroy. Earth is

our home; a healthy and happy living can be made possible with planned use of this resource. Some simple tips which may be very out-of-date, but just as a reminder.• Plant a Tree - Trees suck up carbon dioxide and provide clean air for us to breathe. Even a small space is sufficient to plant some trees and nurture them or a balcony to grow potted plants will help to increase the supply of fresh air.• Use of electricity - LED Bulbs\Tubes will help to increase our energy efficiency. Switch off the light and fans when you leave the room; Do not use the air-conditioner unless it’s necessary; Do not keep appliances on standby; Unplug chargers after use.• Plastic carry bags- Avoid plastic bags and adopt the habit of using reusable bags; Carry along reusable cloth bags when you go marketing• Reduced Use of Motor Vehicles - Walk whenever possible instead of using the vehicle or use a cycle.• Confirm properly insulated Ducts - Up to 20 percent of heating and cooling energy is lost due to poorly sealed or insulated ducts in your homes. Make sure your ducts are

Rajesh M CHead, Risk Monitoring

properly insulated and install weather stripping around windows and doors for a better seal. • Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle: Reducing your garbage by 25 percent will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,000 pounds per year. Recycling aluminium cans, glass bottles, plastic, cardboard and newspapers can reduce your home’s impact by 850 pounds of carbon dioxide per year. Decreasing carbon dioxide emissions can help stop global warming. • Conserve Water: Purification and distribution of water takes lots of energy. You can make simple changes to reduce the amount of water you use.

1. Avoid using purified water for gardening, car wash, cleaning, mopping etc.2. Replacing an old toilet can save about 7,500 gallons of water a year. 3. Fixing a leak in a toilet can save as much as 200 gallons a day. 4. Use low-flow shower heads and turn the water heater thermostat down to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. 5. Water the yard and outdoor plants early or late in the day to reduce evaporation.6. Use a broom, not a hose to clean driveways and walk ways7. Turn of the water while soaping

hands and brushing teeth These steps can add up to serious

savings on your water and energy bills. • Air Dry Your Clothes: Line-dry your clothes in the spring and summer instead of using the dryer, especially in places where sun light is available. • Purchase Local Products: Try to make your purchases locally and reduce the amount of energy required to drive when quality products are available in your neighbourhood store. • Buy Minimally Packaged Goods: Less packaging could reduce your garbage by about 10%. • Turn off Your Computer: Shut off your computer when not in use.

A little thought by everyone is sufficient to make life beautiful.

DAYS tO rEMEMBEr

As super beings dwelling on earth it is our prime duty to protect, preserve

and effectively control our natural resources. It is the responsibility of the present generation to keep a healthy atmosphere and to prepare a base for an established and dynamic society and to ensure the well – being of the future generations. Therefore, World Conservation Day is celebrated each year on July 28th.

The natural resources such as water, air, soil, minerals, trees, animals, food, and gas are enormously used by humans for pushing on our daily lives. Here, we should also keep in mind that mother earth is also the home of various species other than humans and they also should live in this environment.

A report from the global conservation organization World Wildlife Foundation suggests that since 1970, the pressure that we exert on the planet has doubled and the resources upon which we depend have declined by 33 percent. Despite the efforts put into conservation by organizations and conservation activists, their work has been undermined by those who have poor interests.

Scientists have warned that very soon there will be mass extinction of resources and also disappearance of some animal and plant species. The rich resources are being wasted and the destruction of the planet will be complete with the piling up of concrete and steel. Man boasts that these things are required for sustaining humanity but sad to say that it is done at the cost of other species. It should be remembered that all these resources are necessary for the survival of

World Nature Conservation Day

humans as well. Carbon emitted from the huge

industries which has increased the temperature of the planet, which in turn has resulted in melting of fresh water glaciers and increased the intensity of storms thereby rising of the sea water levels are all the after effects of cutting down of trees in large numbers and exploiting the abundant resources to the will and pleasure of man.

The natural world is facing an increasing threat from unsustainable practices and the challenge is how to preserve and conserve nature in the process of achieving sustainable development. The state of nature has an impact on human survival, local and global economics, community life, human health and wellbeing.

This day is observed all over the world with the objective of increasing awareness about and protecting the natural resources that the earth is bestowed with.

It is necessary to understand what

‘Sustainability truth means and also it is important to inculcate environment - friendly habits to lead a Green lifestyle. Some simple practices that can make your lifestyle green are:

• Help in conservation activities in your area or surrounding areas.• Participate in the environment awareness activities.• Wise use of resources such as paper, fuel, water etc.• Efficient use of energy at home• Avoid plastic bags while shopping• Practice eco-tourism while travelling• Say no to littering• Inform destruction of nature to concerned authorities Nature has given us so much. If we

don’t conserve, we lose these precious privileges to exploitation and abuse of resources. On this day, let us make a conscious effort to contribute to the local, national, and global efforts in conserving nature and the benefits they provide for the present and future generations.

Monsoon though wet and damp is a blessing for the whole of India. Besides

it’s a time of excitement for nature lovers and poets with aesthetic sense to express their creativity through different medias of communication such as poems, articles, photographs, videos, documentary and many more. Kerala does not have incessant rains that stop all activity. It rains for a few hours with sunny interludes. Occasionally the rains might stretch on for a few days but sunshine is never far away. These golden interludes provide equilibrium to life’s natural flow.

Kerala has mainly two rainy seasons. The Southwest Monsoon that arrives by June every year as regular guest and the Northeast Monsoons which arrives by mid October. When the Southwest monsoons gather water from the Arabian sea and breaks into two major branches to give rainfall to the whole of India, the Northeast monsoons collect water from the Bay of Bengal and gives heavy rainfall to the Eastern coast including Tamil Nadu which was devoid of precipitation from Southwest monsoon. Needless to say the tiny state of Kerala receives rainfall from both these guests who are regular visitors.

The art forms of Kerala demand the utmost dedication and training. These

Monsoon thrills of Kerala

native art forms require complete control over each nerve of the body. As part of this training the artists undergo Ayurvedic therapies. Special herbal oils and medications are applied on the body of the artists during the Monsoon time to ensure muscle flexibility and dexterity of movement. As nature recoups with the rains, it is rejuvenation time for humans too. According to Ayurveda, Monsoon is the best season for rejuvenation therapies. During the Monsoon season, the atmosphere remains dust-free and cool, opening the pores of the body to the maximum, making it most receptive to herbal oils and therapy.

Let’s take a travel through some of the picturesque locations in Kerala during monsoon season.

MUNNARThe rolling plains of Munnar with its

tea plantations, spices gardens in the mist filled nature and strong aroma of high range is known as nature lover’s paradise. Who/whom/that When using proper grammar, many find the decision between using who versus whom very confusing.

Guidelines• “Who” refers to the subject of a sentence; “whom” refers to the object.• “Who” and “whom” work in the same way as “he” or “him”. You can work out which you should use by asking yourself the following:• “Who did this? He did” – so “who” is correct. “Whom should I invite? Invite him” – so “whom” is correct.• “That” is often used incorrectly in place of “who” or “whom”. When referring to a person, you should not use the word “that”.

Wrong usage• Who shall I invite? Correct usage is ‘Whom Shall I invite’• Whom is responsible? Correct usage is ‘Who is responsible’• He was the only person that wanted to come. Correct usage is ‘He was the only person who wanted to come’

More vs. BetterThese two words should not be used together in a sentence.

Wrong usage Example: You could have done it in a more better way.

The word ‘better’ in itself means superiority hence the use of the word “more” in the sentence is not required.

Which vs. ThatThis is one of the most popular mistakes committed by most of the people while using these words. ”That” should be used as a restrictive pronoun while “Which” should be used as a relative pronoun to imply the available options. In a nutshell, “Which” defines and “That” limits.Example: I do not go to cinema theatres that are not air conditioned. This means that you limit yourself to A. C. Theatres.I only watch English movies which are available on DVD. It means that you can watch English movies available on DVD

and need not download them.

Accept vs. ExceptThough these words sound almost the same the meanings are entirely different.

”Accept” - to agree to take something that is being offered. E.g. - Kindly accept our sincere gratitude. ”Except” - means to rule out something. E.g. - This belt is new except for the buckle.

May vs. MightIn popular usage and speech, ‘may’ and ‘might’ are used interchangeably when referring to possibility and probability, but there is a slight difference between the two. May is used to express what is possible, factual, or could be factual. ‘May’ is normally used to indicate a possibility while ‘Might’ shows an uncertainty.

E.g. – Running five kilometres may be tiring for you.E.g. - It might be a hot day tomorrow.

Since vs. Because“Since” can act as an adverb or a conjunction. In either case it can mean from a certain time in the past until the present, or after a certain time in the past. When used as a conjunction it can be used as a synonym for “because”.

Because is a conjunction which can either introduce an explanation or reason for something. It is also a synonym for since.Traditionally there was a distinction between the two; however, they are interchangeable now. The one caution is the dual definition of “since”. Sometimes in a sentence, there may be ambiguity as to whether you are using the time meaning or the reasoning meaning. Because only has the reasoning meaning and may be more clear in those instances.E.g. - Since my dog is so hairy, I have to get its hair cut regularly. Because my dog is so hairy, I have to get its hair cut regularly. Both of these sentences are correct. E.g. - Since we had breakfast, we were filled with energy. The meaning of this sentence is vague.

The traditional Hebrews acknowledged the rainbow as a valuable sign given by God,

where God wanted all living things to live and flourish in peace and harmony including all clans, tribes, colours, faiths and nations. God never wanted any division between man but only mutual respect, love and appreciation for one another. Ancient people on the whole accepted the ‘Rainbow’ as a sign of reconciliation and synchronization.

The story of the ‘Rainbow’ is quite ideal in this context.

Once upon a time all the colours in the world started to quarrel; each claimed that they were the best, the most important, the most useful, or the most favourite.

GREEN said, “Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and hope. I was chosen for the grass, the trees and the leaves. Without me all the animals would die. Look out into the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority.”

BLUE interrupted. “You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is the water that is the basis of life and this is drawn up by the clouds from the blue sea. The sky gives space, and peace and serenity. Without my peace you would all be nothing but busybodies.”

YELLOW chuckled: “You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, and the

stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun.”

ORANGE next started to blow its own trumpet. “I am the colour of health and strength. I may be scarce but I am precious because I serve the inner needs of human life. I carry all the important vitamins. Think of the carrots, the pumpkins and the oranges. I don’t hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise, or give you a majestic sunset to admire, my beauty is so striking that no one ever gives another thought to any of you!”

RED could stand it no longer. Red shouted out, “I’m the ruler of you all. Blood, life’s blood. I am the colour of danger and bravery. I am willing to fight for a cause. I bring fire in the blood. Without me the earth would be as empty as the moon. I am the colour of passion and of love, the red rose, the poinsettia and the poppy.”

VIOLET rose up to its full height. He was very tall and spoke with great pomp: “I am the colour of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs and bishops have chosen me, for I am the sign of authority and of wisdom. People do not question me. They listen and obey.”

INDIGO spoke more quietly than the others, but just as determinedly. “Think of me, I am the colour of silence. You hardly notice me but without me you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection,

twilight and deep waters. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace.”

And so all the colours went on boasting, each convinced that they were the best. Their quarrelling grew louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of brilliant white lightning; thunder rolled and boomed out. Then suddenly RAIN started to pour down relentlessly. All the colours crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.

Then RAIN spoke: “You foolish colours, fighting amongst yourselves, each trying to dominate the other. Did you not know that the Creator made you all, each for a special purpose, unique and different? The Creator loves you all, he wants you all to Join hands with one another and come with me. He will stretch you across the sky in a great bow of colour as a reminder that He loves you all, that you can live together in peace, a promise that he is with you, a sign of hope for all for tomorrow.”

So whenever the earth is blessed with a good RAIN to wash the world, God puts the RAINBOW in the sky, and when we see it we should remember that He wants us all to appreciate the harmony, and live with, each other in peace and not try to fight or dominate one another. Peace and harmony can never be purchased; it has to come from us.

A most awaited guest who makes a visit every year, sometimes hands full and at

time a little short. Thus the arrival of monsoon is eagerly awaited by all the people of India. The rivers get filled up with water as most of them would be dry from the scorching heat of summer. Agriculturalists plan their activities only by the arrival of monsoon. Harvest festivals of different states are all depending on the monsoons and agricultural calendar. The whole country is relieved from the hot summer season making it milder and bearable. Monsoon fetches sufficient rainfall for agriculture, industries, domestic purposes, and recharge the underground aquifers enabling sufficient water till the coming year.

ARRIVAL OF MONSOONLand would be extremely hot and dry during the months of March, April, May, making the North-western parts of India parched and an intense low pressure trough develops which further acts as a magnet to attract the South West rain bearing winds. The reversal of trade winds during this season is called ‘Monsoon’. The South- East trade winds deflect and reverse its direction attracted by the

mONSOON A uNIfYINg BoND

extreme heat on land and triggers off as South West winds bearing water from the Ocean. These winds are rather strong providing around 80 percent of water required. Within a month or two it supplies with water, though unevenly, to the whole of India except Tamil Nadu and parts of Rajasthan as they are located in an unfavourable position to the monsoon winds.

PATH OF MONSOON• Arrives at the southern tip of

India (Kerala, Kanyakumari region) by the last week of May.

• Splits into two branches as ‘Arabian Sea’ branch and ‘Bay of Bengal’ branch

• Arabian Sea branch moves along the Western coast giving heavy rainfall on the western coastal regions up to Gujarat. The Western Ghats which block the winds make it even stronger as it rises along the mountainside providing maximum rainfall especially to Kerala.

• By the time it reaches Gujarat, it sheds all its water and further the winds are devoid of moisture while moving to Rajasthan, a state which has no relief feature in a favourable position.

• The ‘Bay of Bengal’ branch

crosses the Bay of Bengal and arrives at Myanmar and Chirapungi, Mawsynram regions providing maximum water. The hilly region of the North East with Gharo, Khasi and Jayanthia hills forming funnel traps the winds which in turn sheds maximum water.

• The winds after shedding water in Chirapungi further moves to the North West but with little water, though comparatively weak gives water to the Gangetic plains and the rivers are flooded as they are both snow-fed and rain-fed rivers.

• The winds further reach the Rajasthan region nearly dry. Coincidently both the branches of monsoon on reaching Rajasthan are devoid of moisture.

• The winds which reach Myanmar are stopped by the Arakkan Mountains and deflected back to India.

• Crossing the Bay of Bengal, the winds pick up moisture from the Bay of Bengal and strikes back on the Eastern parts of India which had not received rain at the time of its arrival.

• The position of Tamil Nadu falls in the rain shadow region of the Western Ghats and not being in the route, unfavorable to the winds from Myanmar, making it dry.

• Later, by September/October the North-East trade winds gains strength and strikes Tamil Nadu with cyclonic winds and rainfall. The reversal of winds from Myanmar also joins the game.

• Beginning its annual visit by May, leaves India by November, once more to return in the year to come.

Monsoon in India is known to be a ‘Unifying Bond’ bringing together farmers, states, industries, festivals and rivers that wait to get flooded. Even the land is relieved from its thirsty and dry condition. Despite its vagaries, monsoon is welcome with open hands; unite to reap the advantages brought to us by this special guest.

A supercell is a unique kind of cellular thunderstorm that is very well structured and

organized. The main characteristic that sets them apart from other storms is a rotating updraft. Like all thunderstorms, supercells are formed when warm, moisture-rich air masses collide with cooler, drier air masses. However, supercells are much more likely to form in environments where the winds veer, or turn clockwise with height. The veering winds lead to the rotational updrafts, also known as mesocyclones. Supercells are often isolated from other thunderstorms, and can dominate the local weather up to 32 kilometres away.

CHARACTERISTICS Typically, supercells are found in the warm sector of a low pressure system propagating generally in a north easterly direction in line with the cold front of the low pressure system. Because they can last for hours, they are known as quasi-steady-state storms. Supercells have the capability to deviate from the main wind. If they track to the right or left of the main wind, they are said to be “right-movers” or “left-movers,” respectively. Supercells can sometimes develop two separate updrafts with opposing rotations, which splits the storm into two supercells: one left-mover and one right-mover.

Supercells can be of any size – large or small, low or high topped. They

usually produce abundant amounts of hail, heavy rainfall, strong winds, and extensive downbursts. Supercells are one of the few types of clouds that typically generate tornadoes.

GEOGRAPHYSupercells can occur anywhere in the world under the right weather conditions. The first storm to be identified as the supercell type was the Wokingham storm over England in 1962. To the extent that records are available, supercells are most frequent in the Great Plains of the central United States and southern Canada extending into the south-eastern U.S. and northern Mexico; east-central Argentina and adjacent regions of Uruguay; Bangladesh and parts of eastern India; South Africa; and eastern Australia. Supercells occur occasionally in many other mid-latitude regions, including Eastern China and throughout Europe. The areas with highest frequencies of supercells are similar to those with the most occurrences of tornadoes.

EFFECTSSupercells can produce large hail, damaging winds, deadly tornadoes, flooding, dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning, and heavy rain. Severe events associated with a supercell almost always occur in the area of the updraft/downdraft interface. While tornadoes are perhaps the most dramatic of these severe events, all

are dangerous. High winds caused by powerful outflow can reach over 148 km/h and downbursts can cause tornado-like damage. Flooding is the leading cause of death associated with severe weather. Note that none of these severe events are exclusive to supercells, although these events are highly predictable once a supercell has formed.

REPORTS IN INDIASome reports suggest that the severe flood on 26 July 2005 in Mumbai, India was caused by a supercell when there was a cloud formation 15 kilometres high over the city. On this day 944 mm of rain fell over the city, of which 700 mm fell in just four hours. The rainfall coincided with a high tide, which aggravated conditions.

Supercells occur commonly from March–May in Bangladesh, West Bengal and the bordering north-eastern Indian states including Tripura. Supercells that produce very high winds with hail and occasional tornadoes are observed in these regions, with them also occurring along the Northern Plains of India and Pakistan. On March 23, 2013, a massive tornado ripped through Brahmanbaria district in Bangladesh, killing 20 and injuring 200.

iNSPiriNG StorIES

Molai Forest, named after Jadav “Molai” Payeng, 1360 acres of jungle developed

to be what it is today, singlehanded with strong will power and the right focus. A thoughtful deed started by a teenager three decades ago, after noticing the destruction of a large number of reptiles due to lack of sufficient vegetation.

Jadav Peyang was only 16 years when the flood hit Assam, and Payeng observed that the flow of migratory birds was gradually declining. What disturbed him most was that the forest areas and wetlands near his home and snakes were disappearing in large numbers. Peyang said “I asked my elders, what they would do if all of us die one day, like these snakes. They just laughed and smirked but I knew I had to make the planet greener.”

He alerted the forest department but they asked him to plant trees himself (which he actually did). He located a riverine island, on the banks of River Brahmaputra, and began to plant the saplings. Payeng visited the island and planted a few saplings every day for three decades. But he could not draw water from the river and water all the growing plants, as the area proved to be vast for one man.

He built a bamboo platform on the

top of each sapling and placed earthen pots with small holes in them. The water would gradually drip on the plants below and water them through the week until the pots were drained of water. Next year, in 1980, he started working with the social forestry division of Golaghat district when they launched a scheme of tree plantation on 200 hectares at Aruna Chapori situated at a distance of 5 km from Kokilamukh in Jorhat district.

Payeng was one of the labourers who worked in that 5-year-long project. He chose to stay back after the completion of the project even after other workers left. He looked after the plants and continued to plant more trees on his own, in an effort to transform the area into a forest.

Today the same area is groomed to be a jungle which is home to the Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceros, over 100 deer and rabbits besides apes and several varieties of birds, including a large number of vultures. Thousands of species of trees are found here and Bamboo itself covers over 300 hectares. A herd of around 100 elephants regularly visits the forest every year and generally stays for around six months. They have given birth to 10 calves in the forest in recent years.

Payeng belongs to a tribe called

“Mishing” in Assam, India. He lives in a small hut in the forest with his wife, and his 3 children. He has cattle and buffalo on his farm and sells the milk for his livelihood, which is his only source of income.

Payeng was honoured at a public function arranged by the School of Environmental Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University on 22nd April, 2012 for his remarkable achievement. JNU vice-chancellor Sudhir Kumar Sopory named Jadav Payeng as “Forest Man of India”. In the month of October 2013, he was honoured at the Indian Institute of Forest Management during their annual event ‘Coalescence’.

The amazing willpower and unselfish deeds of Jadav Peyang was instrumental in winning this battle singlehandedly. When the common man including us has no hesitation to cut trees for luxuries, Jadev had sacrificed all his worldly pleasures to save the environment and the eco-system. Today our country needs more such crusaders to make the Earth a better place to live in. Bind together to support this noble cause which will make the earth a healthier place not only for us but also for generations yet to come.

All eagerly wait for the monsoon but is also a season of widespread infections

and bacteria. A little caution ensures enjoyment during this great season, keeping you away from seasonal illnesses. Everything from food to water can lead to serious health problems in the Monsoons. Communicable diseases like malaria, influenza, cold, diarrhoea, food and water infections and typhoid are widespread.

However, a few preventive tips can keep you and your family healthy and safe.

Tips To Sidestep Communicable Diseases During Monsoon.1. Boost your Vitamin C & E intake – Through intake of natural food or as a supplement, increase immunity to colds and influenza. Use of Vitamin E & C has proved to be very effective.2. Reduce coffee – It is tempting to sip hot steaming coffee to keep us warm during monsoons, as chances of causing dehydration through fluid loss in body is rather high during this season.3. Shower the first rule – After getting wet in the rain make it the first and foremost rule to take a shower and wash off the bacteria carried with you while outdoors and then relax to talk about your day or start watching your favorite show on television.4. Avoid Roadside Eateries – Mouthwatering and warm food from Dhaba’s is a temptation of the rainy season. Unhygienic roadside eateries are breeding ground for bacteria which in turn prepares our body for infections, especially from food prepared in germ infested conditions.5. Increase Water Intake – Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.

Confirm clean drinking water to reduce risk of infection. 6. Hot Beverages – Drinking hot tea, milk and soups enables your body to fight infections caused by sudden temperature changes. Herbal tea is also ideal for the season.7. Mosquito-Proof Your Homes – Mosquitoes are the main carrier of bacteria during monsoon season. The multiply and become very active during this season. Keep your homes mosquito-proof or use mosquito repellents as protection against mosquitoes.8. Keep Away From Air-Conditioner – Never stay in an AC room when you are wet or if you even have a tendency for cough and cold. Ac can only be a cause to aggravate your problem. 9. Use Clean Fruits and Vegetables- Wash all veggies and fruits thoroughly and store it in a cool dry place. Leafy vegetables should be washed carefully with salt and a pinch of turmeric powder. Unclean fruits and vegetables can be a cause for diarrhea and food poisoning.10. Boat races are a visual splendor and Kerala boat races are well renowned attracting tourists

to Kerala. The spirit of the people and the preparations in the villages reach a peak when the banks of River Pamba overflows with people cheering and encouraging the oarsmen.

The Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is the oldest boat race after Aranmula Boat race of South Kerala. The race is held on the River Pamba on Moolam day, as per the Malayalam calendar.

The snake boats ripping through the serene waters and propelled by hundreds of oarsmen splashing and beating their oars about in the waters in unison makes for a grand visual spectacle. Boats such as chundan (snake boat) and other types from nearby regions line up to participate in this spectacular water sport.

HISTORYThe Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is held on the day of installation of the deity at the Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple in the Alapuzha district of Kerala. It is said that the Raja of Chempakasseri, Pooradam Thirunal Devanarayanan, built a temple at Ambalappuzha as suggested by the royal astrologers, but just before the installation of the deity (Lord Krishna) he was informed that the idol was not auspicious.

It was important to install a suitable idol immediately. Accordingly, the priests identified another idol of Lord

champakulam

Krishna, kept at the Karinkulam temple in Kurichi. This idol was believed to have been given to Arjuna by Lord Krishna himself, and was therefore considered very sacred. After getting the idol from the temple, the Raja’s men started their return journey. But as night had set in, under Raja’s instruction, they took shelter at a Christian household, the home of Mappilassery Itty Thommen. Itty Thommen was a loyal subject and a soul mate of the king.

Itty Thommen and his family received the men and the idol with great honour. The next day, the Raja and his comrades turned up at Mappilassery, accompanied by a huge mass of people. Pujas were offered to the deity and Itty Thommen and his men also travelled with the convoy to Ambalapuzha where the idol was duly consecrated and installed. On the way, the people of Champakulam and adjoining areas, as well as the priests and laypeople of the Champakulam Kalloorkadu Church, honoured the Raja and the idol.

These events took place in 1545 A.D. The Raja, pleased with the love and affection shown to him by his Christian subjects, declared that henceforth, to commemorate these events, a great water carnival would be held at Champakulam every year, on Moolam day in the Malayalam month of Mithunam. Thus began the Champakulam Snake Boat Race and related functions, which continue to this day.

In 1613 A.D., sixty-three years after the idol was given shelter at Mappilassery, the old house was being

demolished and a new one being built. Raja Devanarayanan’s successor heard the news and immediately sent word to Itty Thommen’s son, Kunhi Thommen that the area where the idol was kept, which was considered as a sacred place, was to be specially demarcated and used only as a place of worship. Also, in keeping with Hindu practices, no menstruating women were to enter the room. A special lamp, made of rare metals, was given to the family, to be kept in this holy place, and perpetually burning, as an eternal flame. Special privileges were also conferred on the family, including the grant of lands and coconut groves to supply the oil for the lamp.

Even today, these practices continue. The lamp is kept perpetually burning. Every year priests and other delegates from the temple call at the house on Moolam day, with gifts and prasadam for the head of the house. This ceremony is known as the Moolakazcha. It is believed that on Moolam Day, Lord Krishna resides not at the Temple, but at Mappilassery House! Reverentially, on unshod feet, the Temple delegates enter the prayer room, where along with Christian icons like the cross, and statues of Jesus and Mary, the lamp, known as the Vazhakoombu Vilakku is given a place of prominence. The temple representatives then venerate the lamp, and are treated by the family to a sumptuous feast. It is only after all these ceremonies that the famous Champakulam Snake Boat Race commences.

TRANSPORTThough Cochin International airport is the closest by air, it is well connected by road and rail. The closest railway station is Alappuzha.

Amarendra Bahubali upholds is appreciable and should be adopted by all leaders. The attitude and approach to soldiers right from the beginning of the battle shown by Amarendra Bhaubali entirely differs from that of Balladeva who gives no concern to his troops.

It is the duty of leaders to motivate the team members when we are running behind success. When Kalakeyan attacked, the soldiers were driven into depth of fear and believed they were nearly dying. But Amarendra Bahubali understood the situation and motivated the team members. ‘Even If we reach the face of death we have nothing to fear, uphold belief ’.

In the modern world respect is a word which is fading away from our life dictionary. We are very reluctant to give respect to each other, especially to women. In a scene Devasena chopped the fingers of a troop of the Mahishmathi fort for molesting her. When Amarendra Baahubali came to know about this he said “You did a mistake Devasena, his head should have been chopped off. The scene is a clear indication to ‘Respect women...! If we are trying to find lessons from this film, a big book itself could be written.

The film and its creation, art, screen play, visual effects, conversations are all scoring over one another. No doubts Bahubali will be a valuable asset to our Indian film Industry...!

Once we understand the story of a movie, most of us will not want to repeat viewing it. But,

I had visited the theatre a second time to watch ‘Bahubali 2.’

‘Bahubali’ is a film in two parts which has grabbed a place for Indian films in the world film industry either by breaking previous records or even by crafting a new record. Whatever, it is a film of 100% visual wonders. But here the question is whether the film has gained importance on account of its story or visualization...? My answer is a cent percent ‘NO...!’ Because, watching of this film is like reading of books which comprises of ethics and morals. We have to learn many lessons from this film. The film is taking us to a world of integrities and moralities which we could adopt in our life..!

The modern world which is prominent for greed is clearly depicted through a character in the film Ballala Deva who is the brother of Amarendra Bahubali who at the same time stood for ideologies and goodness. Ballala Deva is a representation of people who are running after power, wealth, status, possessions etc. But Bahubali here stands for

principles he had acquired in his child hood. He is never giving any importance for power and assets but he gives importance for his principles and beliefs. He is the king who gave his life for values and integrity. In the ancient Indian myth, ‘Bali’ itself means ‘giving one’s life for a thought’. In this film also Bahubali has given his life

for his principles and values which is a great lesson to the world on how to give prime importance and stick to values and principles of life. Whatever Balladeva had captured through his greed is not enough to safe guard him and he ended up his life in the hands of Mahendra Bahubali who is the young son of Amarendra Bahubali.

The movie highlights another principle, Without self-esteem there is no meaning in the huge quantity of resources we may possess...! “Kalakeyan” a cruel king in the neighbourhood attacked Magishmathi with an army four times bigger than the soldiers of Magishmathi. Before the onset of the battle, Shivakami, the lady emperor of Magishmathi had told both sons that whoever defeats the enemy without giving up the life of even one of our soldiers will be the upcoming king of Magishmathi. When Ballala Deva was given large number of weapons for the battle, Amarendra bahubali was given very few weapons. Bahubali believed in his thoughts and ideas and executes innovative ideas to defeat Kalakeyan. In the battle Kalakeyan and his soldiers were defeated and killed despite his support from 1 lakh soldiers only because he had no confidence on how to use his resources. Begin to think in an identical way in the use of our limited resources with novelty to reach our goals.

Humanity to our team members is another important lesson we have to learn from this film, the values
