WELCOME TO THE SHOW

Welcome to the second year of the New Providence Boat Show! We are so excited for you to see the boats and products on display, learn from

the experts, and enjoy the special features that this year’s show brings your way.

Here at the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association, we call this boat show new—because our association took ownership of the show only last year and we’ve been inspired by the challenge of finding new ways to bring you the excitement of boating each January. In reality, the Providence Boat Show is 22 years old and an annual tradition in the Ocean State. With our state’s incredible boatbuilding craftsmen, service technicians, and legendary sailors, it is no surprise that Rhode Island’s marine industry would come together to produce one of the best indoor winter shows in the country.  Here is a taste of what we have in store for you.

Our Show Pavilion, sponsored by Washington Trust Company, is our main hub of activity; stop there often while you’re at the show! Visit our Volvo Ocean Race feature, where you can feel the energy, taste the excitement, and prepare for the arrival of the round-the-world fleet in May. And don’t forget to take a trip to Reel Island, brought to you by Rhode Island Coastal Angler Magazine, featuring Captain Jack Sprengel and his cadre of catch experts presenting on the hottest topics for fishing enthusiasts. Want to gain more skills for max enjoyment on the water? Learn about our Seminars in this guide.

Many of our special features are located in the common areas of the Rhode Island Convention Center where you can enjoy family fun activities that are open to the public. Visit our New England Boating Experience, brought to you by New England Boating, owners and producers of the television show and magazine of the same name. This new area showcases what’s great about boating in our corner of the world—and you’ll also take home a souvenir. Our TV friends have brought in a green screen for free photo fun; surf a big wave on a high-performance speedster or set sail with our Volvo Ocean Race hometown team, Team Alvimedica. Photos will be available for immediate Facebook sharing.

Two other areas for the entire family are our Youth Boat Build and the ArtSEA Gallery. The youth of today are our workforce of tomorrow, and thanks to The Van Beuren Charitable Foundation and the Rhode Island Foundation we can highlight the skills of young people from across the Ocean State who are using their passion for boating and building as their ticket to high-tech, high-paying career paths in our industry. Our ArtSEA Gallery showcases marine and nautical art of all types, from recognizable names and budding artists. There is treasure to be found within any budget at this new and beautiful addition to the show.

Finally, please join me in thanking our sponsors Washington Trust, Tasca, and New England Boating. They are joined by an entire team of show sponsors that have helped make this show a great day out for you and your family.

The Rhode Island Marine Trades Association and its 300 member companies hope you enjoy our show. Let the Boating Begin!

WASHINGTON TRUST SHOW PAVILIONThe Providence Boat Show has a center stage: it’s called the Washington Trust Show Pavilion. This area of the show—sponsored by Washington Trust, the largest state-chartered bank headquartered in Rhode Island and one of the premier financial institutions in the region—is the go-to hub of the show. It’s your waypoint if you want to meet star personalities, learn from experts, and enjoy a full slate of special events that run throughout all three days of the boat show. Get a seat at the table for the sea-to-table demos with the region’s leading chefs, take part in fun hands-on activities for the entire family, and attend sessions on hot topics for today’s boaters. The Pavilion will also feature a video wall—so you’ll be entertained by some of the hottest boating action seen on this side of the Atlantic. Check in at the Show Pavilion when you arrive at the show to make sure you don’t miss any of our center stage attractions.

NEW ENGLAND BOATING EXPERIENCEWant to celebrate what’s great about going boating in our corner of the world? Then visit the New England Boating Experience. The team at New England Boating, owners and producers of the television show and magazine of the same name, know what’s special about our region—and it’s all coming your way at this new section of the show. Think sailing is just for water? Learn about Kitewing sailing and the equipment used for wind-powered skiing. Visit with the Providence Community Boating Center to learn how easy it is to get time on the water at their facilities.Make time to learn to surf on dry land on a SurfSet board with instructors from FloorTime Studios. You can also talk with the experts at Laser Performance and Zim Sailing, two of the region’s top boat manufacturers.   New England Boating has even brought in a green screen for free photo fun; surf a big wave on a high-performance speedster or set sail with our Volvo Ocean Race hometown team, Team Alvimedica. Photos will be available for immediate Facebook sharing.

CATCH VOLVO OCEAN RACE FEVER If you haven’t already caught Volvo Ocean Race fever, you will when you step through the doors of the Providence Boat Show. This ultra-rugged, round-the-world sailing marathon is taking place in real time just as the boat show comes to Providence. In January, racers will be making their way to Sanya, China. At the boat show you can learn more about the event, its teams of top ocean racers, and cheer on hometown heroes Charlie Enright and Mark Towill of Team Alvimedica. These two young Rhode Island sailors raced at Brown University and turned their seven-year dream of competing in this global marathon into a reality by teaming up with their Turkish sponsor. The only U.S. stopover in this 11-port race will be in Newport, Rhode Island, in May 2015. So come to the boat show to catch Volvo Ocean Race fever, stock up on race gear from TeamOne Newport—then plan to be in the Ocean State next May to welcome this fleet of ocean greyhounds to U.S. shores.

SHOW HIGHLIGHTS FROM SEA TO TABLEWant to learn how the top chefs in the region prepare their catch? Plan to attend at least one of our special sea-to-table events during your visit to the Providence Boat Show. This year, Chef Max Peterson of Hemenway’s Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar in Providence joins our line-up of top chefs. Peterson has cooked from coast to coast in the kitchens of leading restaurants—from

Seattle to New England—and dining on the seafood served at Hemenway’s is one of the best reasons to make a detour to Providence. Newport’s Midtown Oyster Bar and Bristol Oyster Bar also joined the sea-to-table line-up this year. Also back by popular demand is a special two-part event: watch an expert fillet a freshly caught fish, then get a lesson in how to prepare that catch from Chef Phyllis Affra of Blaze Restaurant in Providence. So if you love eating seafood, plan to work some sea-to-table time into your boat show schedule. But plan early: these events typically play to a standing-room-only crowd. We’ll also be serving oysters and Bloody Mary’s on Sunday morning thanks to Midtown Oyster Bar. See you then!

VISIT REEL ISLANDIf you are a fishing enthusiast, make our new Reel Island your first waypoint at this year’s Providence Boat Show. This brand-new feature of the show, brought to you by Rhode Island Coastal Angler Magazine, makes it easy for you to pursue your biggest passion. Reel Island will not only feature our fishing-related exhibitors: it will also house our biggest attractions for fishing enthusiasts. Stop by Reel Island to catch our series of Sport Fishing Seminars coordinated by Captain Jack Sprengel of East Coast Charters, where local anglers and experts will teach you about the technique and equipment that will net you more enjoyment on the water. Get your fishing license from Wood Boat & Motor. And to get your young anglers excited about the sport, Casting Kids will be at the show to give those new enthusiasts some fun pointers and instruction so they are excited to join you on the water next summer.

FROM OFFICE TO COCKPITLooking for adventure? Meet a woman who is transforming her career in corporate American into a life of sailing adventure. Regina Krieger, a U.S. Coast Guard–licensed captain and ASA-certified sailing instructor, is preparing to participate in the 2015/16 Clipper Round the World race—the only sailing race that welcomes amateur crew as competitors. The race is a 40,000–nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht; all that is asked of participants is that they are over age 18 and have a good level of fitness and a thirst for adventure into the unknown. Join Regina to hear about the legs of the race, what it’s like to train, and how to prepare for this bold adventure. The presentation will include exciting video footage from previous races and a good opportunity to ask questions about an event that just might be your next sailing adventure!

This year, the Providence Boat show is celebrating those water views and maritime subjects with a brand-new feature of the show: the ArtSEA Gallery. A group of artists from throughout New England are bringing their work to the show to celebrate the art that boaters see all around them. See the gorgeous photographs of Newport photographer Onne van der Wal and get a signed copy of his book, purchase a mini-handpainted work of art from RISD graduate Sue Fellows, and more. Students from Tiverton High School will also attend, to showcase their latest projects. IYRS, the School of Technology and Trades, will be at the show to give you insight into how you can turn your passion for boats into a career through their world-renown programs in Boatbuilding & Restoration, Composites Technology, and Marine Systems. SPORT FISHING AND BOATING SEMINARS

One of the best things about the Providence Boat Show is all the education you get once you walk through the show gates. Do you want to learn how to fillet and cook your fresh catch? Or pick up tips for stress-free docking? Or get

advice from the experts about the best ways to get started in boating? Then the Providence Boat Show is where you want to be in January. We have three days of free Sport Fishing and Boating seminars. And if you want more one-on-one time with the experts, check out our Premium Seminars on page 16. Visit our website at providenceboatshow.com to get a complete schedule, and meet our experts on page 18.

SPORT FISHING SEMINARSCaptain Jack Sprengel returns to the Providence Boat Show with his crew of local anglers and experts and a brand-new series of seminars. These sessions, which run all three days of the show, build on the series run at last year’s show. “But we’ve upped the ante,” says Captain Jack. “If you think you’ve been to the Providence Boat Show before, think again. We have worked hard to line up some of the most unique speakers to be found anywhere in the Northeast and are very excited to offer you a full 360-degree perspective of the sport fishing industry.”

You’ll learn from big- money tournament captains, successful guides, an elite male-female on-the-water fishing team, instructors for the Salt Water Sportsman National Seminar Series, a spearfishing industry icon, commercial fishermen, and two teenage anglers who are making waves in the tournament and offshore scene. Catch sessions on canyon fishing, sword fishing, tuna tactics, striped bass, false albacore and bonito, terminal rigging, fluke fishing, Rhode Island cod fishing, togging, filleting and cooking your catch, and much more.

The Sport Fishing Seminar Series is paired with a great raffle drawing. So just for sitting in on one of the boat show’s exciting speakers, you will automatically have a chance to win prizes from STORMR, RonZ Lures, Jay Jigs, AFTCO, Deep Force Jigs, Carlson Offshore Lures, Louis J. Defusco Art, 9ers lures, and Gibbs Lures.

Whether you are a tournament angler looking for an edge or just getting started in the sport, the seminar leaders at the Providence Boat Show will give you the education you need to take your next step in the sport. Says Captain Jack of the experts coming to this year’s show: “These guys are some of the best at what they do—and they come with my personal seal of approval.”

BOATING SEMINARSThe Annapolis School of Seamanship, along with local sponsor Safe/Sea Marine Rescue, has created a new series of Boating Seminars for the Providence Boat Show. These sessions cover a range of topics for all levels of mariners.

Interested in taking your first step into the sport? Then attend our Gateway to Boating session with the pros from Annapolis School of Seamanship to get an overview of the different styles and types of boats and how they fit the boating lifestyle you choose. Or head to our Start Sailing

Now panel where Molly Winans, editor of a new book of the same name, will help you navigate your way into the sport by answering all your questions—from what shoes to wear to what to ask a sailing school before you sign up for lessons.

Professional mariners Captain John Martino and Captain Matt Benhoff will take you up the skill ladder with sessions on how to maintain and troubleshoot your diesel engine, how to master stress-free docking techniques, the best techniques for anchoring safely in any type of setting, and the latest on radar and AIS technology. Attend an invaluable session on towing and salvage with Captain Phil LeBlanc of Safe/Sea, who has spent nearly 20 years extracting boats and boaters from every predicament imaginable; he will share his wealth of knowledge and touch upon the differences between simple towing and more costly salvage. You’ll

even find a session on How to Get your Captain’s License and a one-on-one session with a professional captain so you can ask a pro how he would handle the situations that challenge you on the water.

Local sponsor Safe/Sea Marine Rescue is the leading provider of on-the-water boat towing services and marine salvage services for recreational boaters in Rhode Island.

FREE SEMINARSRHODE ISLAND’SNO SALES TAX ON BOATS

Every boater has a budget—whether it’s in

the hundreds, or thousands, or millions. Regardless of that figure, we all want to stretch our dollars as far as they will go. One way to do that is to look at the tax ramifications of your boating purchases. You can easily do that during your visit to the Providence Boat Show.

SAVE MONEY IN THE OCEAN STATERhode Island has a no-sales-tax policy on boats and boating services. The policy was put into effect in 1993, thanks to the efforts of the Rhode Island Marine Trades Association (RIMTA), the organization that owns and manages the Providence show. There is also no property tax on boats in Rhode Island. Boating is important to the economic life of the state, and policy makers have long recognized the benefits of fostering the health of Rhode Island’s marine trades while also attracting more boaters to its shores.

As you do your boat shopping at the show, ask the dealers you speak with if the no-sales-tax policy can apply to your situation. The rule can apply to boats that are purchased in Rhode Island and registered in the state.

SERVICESThe no-sales-tax policy also applies to boating services. That means repairs, refits,

storage, dockage and mooring fees. You won’t pay sales tax on these services—except for the parts and products used in any work you have done to your boat.

Use the Providence Boat Show as a good way to research marinas as a

potential for winter storage and refit and repair work. You’ll meet the owners and managers of many excellent outfits located throughout the state. Don’t overlook the fact that Rhode Island has a strong concentration of marine-trades talent within its borders.

“When you look at the marine industry on a global scale, there are few places on Earth that have such a dense concentration of high-quality, diverse marine companies,” said Wendy Mackie, CEO of RIMTA. “Just look at the East Bay alone; within a 15-mile radius you have all the technology, expertise and services needed to build an entire boat—whether it’s cutting edge or classic.”

NO PROPERTY TAX If you live in a state that neighbors Rhode Island, you can also use the boat show as a way to research the marinas you can call home for the boating season. Rhode Island does not have

a property tax on boats, so if you make the Ocean State your boating home you won’t be paying those taxes year after year. According to the latest statistics, approximately half of the registered boaters in Rhode Island live in other states—so if you are not a resident

of Rhode Island, you will be joining many others who have decided that an Ocean State berth is the way to go.

While you are at the show, you’ll be able to talk to many marina operators and learn about their facilities. Ask them about their local waters; you may discover fishing and cruising grounds near that marina that you and your family will enjoy exploring together.

All these policies benefit the boating industry in Rhode Island as well as the consumers who choose to take advantage of the state’s policies. “These policies are such a strong incentive to buy your boat in Rhode Island—and to keep it here!” said Mackie.

“These policies are such a strong incentive to buy your boat in Rhode

Island—and to keep it here!”—Wendy Mackie, CEO, RIMTA

SAIL AMERICA SEMINARSLook at the ranks of the top sailors in the world and you’ll see that Rhode Island has an outsize population of experienced cruisers and championship racers. The Ocean State is the place to be if you want to learn how to travel by wind power alone, so this year the Providence Boat Show teamed up with Sail America to bring you a new series of Premium Seminars for sailors.

Sail America, the trade association for the U.S. sailing industry, produces high-quality seminar programs at boat shows around the country. Their industry experts will educate, inform, and entertain you about the joys of the sport while they lead you in hands-on instruction and teach you to navigate the common situations that many racers and cruisers face on the water.

Are you a cruiser who wants to build the kind of skill and expertise that will make you as self-sufficient as possible once you sail away to new waters? Then you won’t want to miss the Sail America seminars on the skills that all cruisers need in Splicing, Marine Plumbing, Sail Repair, and Life Raft & Survival.

Or maybe you’ve mastered the basics of piloting a small- to mid-sized sailboat and you’re ready to try your hand at racing. Come to the boat show for an informative session with veteran racer Joe Cooper on sailboat racing for the novice skipper. You’ll be ready to enter the game come springtime!

All seminars in the Sail America series are one-hour long. Each seminar costs $25, which includes one ticket to the show. Or attend the whole session for $100, which includes two tickets. For more details and a complete schedule of the series, along with a registration link, visit www.providenceboatshow.com.

Thanks to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, you can get your

Certificate of Boating Safety Education during your visit to the Providence Boat Show. Anyone born on or after January 1, 1986, is required to pass an approved boater education course before legally operating any vessel powered by a motor of more than 10 horsepower. Anyone operating a personal watercraft, regardless of age, must have passed an approved boater education course.

You will be able to take the exam at the Providence show to earn your Certificate. To prepare for the test, however, you’ll need to do some homework. An online study course offered by Boat-Ed has been designed to prepare you for the exam. Visit www.boat-ed.com/rhodeisland/ to access the course. If you prefer a home-study course book, request a free copy by contacting the Rhode Island Environmental Police (401-222-2284).

The course covers a range of topics—from safety instructions to boat handling to reading the weather—and prepares you for a variety of situations you could find yourself in while on the water. Because educated boaters are safer boaters, completing this Rhode Island-approved online course can also earn you a discount on your boat and PWC insurance.

The exam will be offered at the boat show on Saturday, January 24, from noon to 4 pm. You must bring a photo ID in order to take the exam. Children under the driving age (without a photo ID) must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with a photo ID who can verify the child’s identity.

If you successfully pass the exam, you’ll be advised on sight and your card will be issued to you via the mail. If you do not pass the exam, you will be advised on how to proceed. The Rhode Island Boating Certification is approved by NASBLA (National Association of State Boating Law Administrators) and accepted nationwide. The process is free of charge, so take advantage of this convenient way to get your Certificate at this year’s Providence Boat Show.

MEET OUR EXPERTS

Experts from throughout the region will be at the Providence Boat Show to share their knowledge in seminars that run all three days of the show. All of our fishing, boating, sailing and safety experts are mariners with deep experience who

have a passion for sharing their wisdom with boaters of all levels. Read about some of them here, then visit our website for a complete listing of all our seminars and experts.

CAPTAIN MATT BENHOFFCaptain Matt Benhoff holds a U.S. Coast Guard Master 100-ton, near-coastal license and has been a full-time professional mariner for nearly ten years. In 2006, he joined the U.S. Coast Guard and became a boatswain mate, serving as a boarding officer and commander of

a 47-foot Motor Life Boat and 25-foot RB-S. After leaving the Coast Guard, Captain Benhoff joined the Annapolis School of Seamanship as an instructor captain and has served on training passages and yacht deliveries in the Chesapeake, Pacific Northwest, Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea.

LANDON COHENBorn in Rhode Island and raised in Maine, Landon Cohen began fishing in a small stream behind his house at age seven. Growing up in Maine gave him the opportunity to fish in ponds, streams, lakes and the Atlantic Ocean. He later expanded his reach into the

waters of Cape Cod. On a quest to explore more water, he purchased a kayak and fished rock piles and ledges with both conventional and fly gear. With his kayak, he has gained access to waters that are difficult to reach by land and has come to know the flats and salt ponds of New England while honing his skill of sight fishing for huge bass. He has most recently begun targeting large gamefish in New England waters.

MOLLY WINANS Annapolis-based Molly Winans is the managing editor of SpinSheet and PropTalk magazines and the new-sailor guide, Start Sailing Now. Winans did not come from a sailing family; she started sailing on her own as a teenager at summer camp and has been sailing for

decades on boats of all sizes. She knows firsthand that you do not have to belong to a yacht club or own your own boat to become an active and proficient sailor—and she enjoys sharing this knowledge with new sailors.

JOE COOPERFrom the America’s Cup, to ocean races in the Atlantic and the Pacific, to the top end of one-design competition, Rhode Island racer Joe Cooper has done it all. He will be at the Providence Boat Show to share his knowledge with sailors who want to get into the racing game. Born in

Australia, Cooper has competed in the America’s Cup, the Sydney-Hobart Race, the Bermuda Race, Chicago-Mackinac, the Sardinia Cup—to name just a few. He has been a strong proponent of doublehanded racing and has competed in numerous distance events as a two-person team. His one-design credits include classes that draw the top sailors in the world, including Lasers, Finns, and Etchells. His entire career has been in the sailing industry and has included positions as yacht captain rigger, sailmaker, yacht broker, high school sailing coach, and independent coach and consultant.

CAPTAIN BRANDON LAKECaptain Brandon Lake of the AFTCO (American Fishing Tackle Company) pro team was raised in the sport-fishing lifestyle and has participated in it actively since the age of two. Although he has placed at the top in several regional tournament series, he’s a

sportsman who normally avoids the limelight. Captain Lake gets on the water in the North East just about every day and his passion, personal character and notable skill sets have made him an essential player for the East Coast Charters team. Lake specializes in using spinning tackle for big game species and has a knack for targeting large striped bass in Rhode Island’s Narragansett Bay.

JIM O’CONNORJim O’Connor is an expert in marine safety and survival who routinely outfits vessels that venture offshore. He will be demonstrating the proper use and storage of emergency life rafts and other survival equipment at the Providence Boat Show. As president and founder of

Life Raft & Survival Equipment, Inc. based in Tiverton (R.I.), he has been outfitting commercial and recreational boats since 1980.

CAPTAIN COREY PIETRAZEKCaptain Corey Pietrazek runs the Plug N Play Charter Group, one of New England’s premier fly and light tackle fishing operations. He grew up in a small coastal town in Massachusetts, the son of an avid angler. As a youngster, fishing in local ponds and estuaries was all he

could think about and he spent many summer days in the small boats his family owned, looking for different places to catch striped bass and bluefish. He has been a licensed captain for 15 years and his accolades and reputation have earned him many invitations to major outdoor sporting venues, including the 2015 Saltwater Sportsman National Seminar Series.

CAPTAIN PHIL LEBLANCCaptain Phil LeBlanc, vice president of Maritime Operations for Safe/Sea Marine Rescue, has spent 17 years in the assistance industry and holds a U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Masters license with a commercial towing endorsement. He is currently a national facilitator

for the BoatUS Towing Advisory Council and a nationally accredited National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) instructor. NASBLA is a national nonprofit organization that develops public policy for recreational boating safety.

CAPTAIN JOHN MARTINO An experienced professional captain with a 20-year background in marine training, Captain John Martino holds a 500 Gross Ton, All-Oceans captain’s license from the U.S. Coast Guard. He has logged more than 1500 sea days in waters ranging from the Great Lakes to

Panama, and has served as captain on ocean-going vessels up to 105 feet. As founder and president of the Annapolis School of Seamanship, he and his team have pioneered the new Boating Seminar series for the Providence Boat Show. Captain Martino produces and leads courses ranging from basic navigation to seamanship—both for recreational boaters and professional mariners training to become licensed captains up to 200 gross tons.

ERIC WAKEFIELDEric Wakefield of North Sails is a professional sailmaker who is coming to the Providence Boat Show to help showgoers learn how to manage their onboard sail care. He has worked in the sail-repair industry for 16 years, including work for America’s Cup syndicates and

Volvo Ocean Race teams. He currently runs one of the largest sail-repair facilities in North America

CAPTAIN JACK SPRENGELCaptain Jack Sprengel of East Coast Charters and Team Shimano, who has coordinated our Sport Fishing Seminars, is known for his edgy style and unique approach to the sport. An active writer and photographer, his work has been featured in publications

such as Saltwater Sportsman, Field and Stream, Coastal Angler and others; he has also appeared on major network television series for the National Geographic and Animal Planet channels. An enthusiast of all species, Captain Jack specializes in light tackle fishing for big game species. He has fished the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, and freshwater lakes, rivers and streams around the world; at home he focuses on near-coastal waters off Block Island and Cape Cod or fishes the canyons of the Northeast U.S. He is a two-time Rhode Island Saltwater Anglers Association (RISAA) Angler of the Year and five-time Hall of fame inductee.

BRYAN COONEYBryan Cooney is president and founder of Headsync LLC, a Newport, Rhode Island–based marine service company that specializes in marine plumbing services for boating enthusiasts and professionals.

KYLE ONEPPO AND KYLE PAPARELLIKyle Oneppo and Kyle Paparelli —often called “The Kyles”—are a dynamic duo who represent the future of sport fishing. They are both only 16 years old but are already forces to be reckoned with. They have placed in and won multiple cash tournaments and are ranked RISAA Anglers of the Year and Hall of Fame inductees. These two young men have racked up more angling credits than anglers twice their age and have landed trophy swordfish, tuna and pelagic sharks in waters as far as 140 miles off shore. Additionally, they have also mastered the more popular inshore species and even freshwater game. The appearance of these two up-and-

coming sportsmen at the Providence Boat Show is a unique opportunity that both young and mature anglers alike will enjoy.

CAPTAIN B.J. SILVIACapt. B.J. Silvia of Rhode Island’s Flippin’ Out Fishing Charters has been fishing Newport, Block Island and Narragansett Bay his whole life. A lifelong Aquidneck Island resident, he has extensive knowledge of the local waters and prides himself on finding fish and ensuring his charter customers have a lot of fun! He has been featured on

TV shows such as Fishing the Ocean State with Don Coyne and On The Water TV. Captain B.J. has been commercial and charter fishing for over 20 years and practices catch and release whenever he can. He is a member of RISAA, Newport County Fishing Club, and the Aquidneck Island Striper Team. Although he is busy charter fishing, a lot of times you’ll still find him throwing plugs in the surf.

SPECIAL EVENT

In February 1952, a ferocious Nor’easter ripped the

500-foot-long oil tanker Pendleton in half off the Cape Cod coast. Twenty miles away a second oil tanker, the Fort Mercer, was also split in half. On both tankers men were trapped on the severed bows and sterns, and all four sections were sinking in frigid waters. Standing between these stranded seaman and the Coast Guardsmen sent to rescue them were towering seas, blinding snow, and one of the most

dangerous shoals in the world—the dreaded Chatham Bar. To find out what happened in this harrowing sea tale, come to the Providence Boat Show to meet Michael Tougias—coauthor of the book The Finest Hours: The True Story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s Most Daring Sea Rescue, which tells the riveting story. The Disney Corporation is making a film based on the book to be released later this year.

Says Tougias of his presentation: “I like to transport the audience into the heart of the storm so that they ask themselves, What would I have done?” Come to the boat show to meet Tougias and watch this tale unfold in his multimedia presentation about this dramatic story of heroism and tragedy at sea.

This month readers of this column have the chance

to actually see this recipe prepared close up and personal with one of Rhode Island’s premier chefs.

Chef Max Peterson of Hemenways will be a featured chef at the Providence Boat Show Jan 23 -25, cooking up Ocean State Acadian Redfish for the crowd.

Not to be confused with the popular Cajun dish, blackened redfish (really a red drum,) Acadian Redfish is an Ocean State classic.

Like many of our lesser known species Acadian redfish has, well, a colorful history. Commonly known as ocean perch, it’s one of three common redfish found in the Northwest Atlantic. According to NOAA, it was “discovered” as a commercial grade fish in the 1930’s. It adapted well to commercial harvest and preservation and was a staple in the diet of our military in the 1940s and 50s.

But like with so many of our species, what we didn’t

Welcome to our ongoing series highlighting Lhode Island’s fresh seafood in the growing trend of providing local and sus-tainable fish and shellfish to consumers and restaurants. In this Sea-to-Table column, we highlight a different seafood each month, interview the folks who grow and catch the food, as well as the restaurant owners and chefs who prepare it. We fea-ture their favorite recipes along with wine and beer pairings to enhance the experience. We invite you to enjoy our recom-

mendations and to submit your own to us at www.coastalanglermag.com/rhodeisland.

SEA TO TABLE

know almost did them in. Acadian redfish grow slowly, live a long time (50 years!) and reproduce at low levels, making them subject to overfishing. By the 1980s the stock was dangerously low. Subsequently the harvests and demand plummeted, which is why you may not have heard much about these redfish until recently.

The good news is that through fisheries management and protection the stock is back. Through a rebuilding plan implemented in 2004 the Acadian redfish population rebounded and now the stock exceeds target population levels, and so is making a comeback on the table. Groups such as REDNET and Gulf of Maine Research Institute are actively looking at ways to market the redfish – perhaps

the next Chilean Sea Bass? This recipe by Chef Max is

a favorite. Simple, delicious, and best served with a cold glass of Sancerre, Chef Max recommends Pascal Jolivet. This recipe is great not only for the Acadian redfish, also for another local favorite, the porgy, which continues to be marketed by an increasingly long list of names in addition to long-time scup. If you check out some of the tonier eateries, you will see it listed as silver snapper or perhaps pan fish, all with the goal of imparting the cache of Chilean Sea Bass which is, after all, just Peruvian toothfish. But that’s another story.

See Chef Max at the Providence Boat Show January 23-25.
