Y o u a r e y o u r c h i l d s f r s t a n d b e s t t e a c h e r ! Here are ways to help your child practice skills while having fun! Name Day 1 1 4 Copyright © Pearson Education, Inc., or its affiliates. All Rights Reserved. 2 This week we’re Reading The Night the Moon Fell Talking About Why some changes are difficult Learning About Syllable Patterns Plot and Theme Write the following words on index cards: picnic, monster, popcorn, camper, poker, river, garden. Ask your child to identify the CVC pattern in each syllable of each word. Your child has been learning about plot and theme. Read a fairy tale together and ask what lesson your child learned. Ask what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Day 2 Have your child read these words: balance, canyons, coral, rattle, slivers, sway, whisper. Have your child ask you questions using these words. Day 3 Have your child write these spelling words on strips of paper: boyhood, cowboy, daydream, downstairs, football, houseboat, oatmeal, outplay, railroad, rainbow, roadway, soybean. Have your child identify the two words that make up each compound word. Then help your child sort the words into groups that have the same spelling patterns: words with -oo and words with –oa sounds. Day 4 This week your child has been learning about plot and theme in stories. Provide a topic and ask your child to make up a story about the topic (for example, a trip). Then discuss the theme of the story with your child. Day 5

Read the story. Follow the directions below.

Maggie and Jean stared out the window of the moving van. They were parked in front of a big building. “Where is our house?” asked Jean. “Up there,” said Mom. She pointed up at some windows. They went inside and up the stairs. The bedrooms were small.

But at least they didn’t have to share, like back on the farm. “We don’t have a yard,” said Maggie. “Where will I grow my green beans?” “Maybe we can build window boxes,” said Jean. “That would be fun!”

1. Where is the moving van parked?

2. How do you think Maggie and Jean feel?

3. Where do you think the new home is?

4. Write a sentence telling whether you think the girls will like their new home and why or why not.

5. Draw a picture of the girls’ new home.

Home Activity Your child read a story and drew conclusions from information in the story. As you read stories together, stop occasionally and ask questions that have answers not stated in the story. For example, ask how characters feel or why they do certain things.
