AUTUMN TERM 2 2016

Letter from Headmistress

Dear Parents,

We have had a busy term and have much to reflect upon as we finish for Christmas.

We have enjoyed sharing the children’s work with you through Contact Week and

during the Parents’ Evenings. I hope that you’d agree that seeing the children’s work in

your home is a worthwhile and enjoyable exercise! Those parents who gave us feedback

were very positive and so we will continue to have a Contact Week in Lower School, as

we have done in Upper School for some time.

Certainly our Parents Evenings have been more “formative” as a result and I hope that

you have a clearer idea about what to do at home to support your child’s progress in

school. This partnership is vital and we do appreciate your feedback on the report sheet.

Your comments are added to your child’s records file so please try to write something

as your responses are important.

The children have been working hard and it hardly seems possible that some have only

been with us for a term; thank you for all you have done to support that transition. I

know that the recent virus has hit us hard and that for some families that can mean care

arrangements are stretched to the limit.

The school Christmas trees were beautifully decorated by Year 6 who have the

responsibility of trimming them – there was a good deal of laughter and discussion about

which decorations went where and I think it may well have been a good test for colour

matching as well as co operation amongst friends. Another Micklefield tradition was

upheld when Mrs Denny and the Chamber Choir visited Park Hall to sing to the

residents and we were given a warm welcome because the children have quite a

reputation there already and this year Holroyd Howe, our caterers, sent us along with

mince pies for the residents too.

Our elderly friends from Abbeyfield attended the dressed rehearsals for the Lower

School Nativity, Stable Story, and what wonderful performances we had! I do hope that

you enjoyed the photographs and sound tracks that you had from the Preparatory and

Lower School performances as the teachers came up with this idea so that you would

have a souvenir to share with your families over Christmas. The Preparatory Nativity

and the Carol Concert at the United Reformed Church were both extremely well

attended and we all thank you for your support at these events.

It hardly seems possible that the Autumn Term finished yesterday while we have the

memories of the Micklefield’s Got Talent Show fresh in our minds. It was a veritable

feast of entertainment and what hidden skills we discovered; magicians, singers,

musicians, orators and feats of athleticism before an appreciative audience. Fortunately

the children voted for their favourite act and so we judges were spared a Herculean

task.

Mr Mackrell and Mrs Jubb did have to exercise some judgement though in order to

present prizes for the Bling your Bike event and what a challenge that must have been.

Each year the “blinging” becomes more creative and we had a singing reindeer, a Father

Christmas coming down the chimney and an angel complete with wings and halo

amongst so many other excellent ideas! Bike It is now a part of school life and I thank

Mr Mackrell and Mrs Jubb for all the extra effort they put in to support this worthwhile

project throughout the year.

We have had a very busy term beyond school and since we have the website and

Facebook page I am sure that you fully aware of the exciting off site visits, match

successes and visitors to school that we’ve had since the last MM!

We have appointed an additional full time Teaching Assistant to Upper School to start

after Christmas. Mrs Lambourn will take on many of the responsibilities that Mrs

Howson has carried out so admirably over the past 17 years.

While we all wished Mrs Howson a long and happy retirement yesterday I am sure we

will be rather envious of her ability to sleep in each morning while she reminisces about

the cold, windy mornings standing beside the gate! Mrs Howson certainly deserves that

extra time in bed but we know that she will be back to help us in Café Rose for our

Open Morning in March next year.

Mrs Howson has been a stalwart of our school and I don’t think that there can be a child

here who have not had the benefit of her kindness at some point. We will miss her very

much indeed.

Mrs Lambourn has been able to visit us several times so that she knows her way about

the school and has already had a welcome tea with the Year 3 classes! I know that you

will do all you can to make her feel welcome too. Mrs Lambourn joins us from Redehall

School and she brings a great deal of expertise with her.

We have also appointed an additional teacher to Belton House. Mrs Ferrey joins us from

Manor House School and I know that Mrs Warren is very pleased that the Belton House

team will have an Early Years specialist. We are very fortunate to have Mrs Ferrey join

3

MICKLEFIELD MESSENGER

AUTUMN TERM 2 2016

us and I have no doubt that she will soon be enjoying the busy atmosphere of Preps. Mrs

Ferrey has also been able to visit the children recently.

This term I have enjoyed being taught by some of the children! As you know we use

iPads now for some of our teaching and I have seen some outstanding lessons where the

children have used a variety of Apps to make impressive voice overs for History, Science

and French. I must say the children have great patience as I grapple with the

technicalities that they use with such confidence. The green screen is fascinating and I

now look at the weather forecast from an entirely different perspective!

We need to thank everyone on the FOM Committee for their hard work in organising

the Christmas Fair and the children’s film nights. It was good to see how many families

supported the Christmas Fair and I believe that many of you enjoyed a pantomime

together too.

Apart from looking forward to all that is to come in celebrating Christmas we also have

some excited Year 4’s who have already had their auditions for next term’s play – Ali

Baba and the Bongo Bandits. I am sure it will be great fun if the songs are an indication

and the costumes are beginning to look most impressive – watch out for the camels!

Before we reach the excitement of that play some of the Year 6 children will sit their

entrance examinations for their senior schools. They have worked hard and have been

extremely supportive of each other in the process. Unfortunately it is rather a drawn

out process as there is no agreed date for the examinations so we wish them well for

their exams whenever they are.

I hope that you have happy times with your families over the holidays and wish you all a

very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year on behalf of the governing body and the

staff.

A Christmas Journey

The Year Two children visited Reigate Park Church to follow the story of Christmas and

the wondrous message of Jesus’ birth. The two classes each completed a craft activity and

then walked through the story of Christmas as told by the biblical characters. A surprise

visit by Angel Gabriel and bread made by Mary were all part of the exciting experience.

The children sang heartily, dressed as shepherds with great enthusiasm and gave careful

thought to God’s message at Christmas time.

Reigate Grammar Carol Writing Competition

During the second half of this term, many of the Year 5 and 6s entered the Reigate Gram-

mar School carol writing competition. The children worked either individually or as part of

a group to write an original carol. Mr Carden (head of Music at RGS) came to Micklefield

to workshop some of their ideas and give them directions for moving it forward.

By the end of November all completed carols were submitted to Mr Carden and from

these a selection were chosen to go to the next stage. Out of all the carols, nine were cho-

sen, written by;

Isabella R, Polly A, Anusha D with Molly F, Mackenzie R, Henry F, Matthew O, Eleanor B,

Sophie P, Eloise H with Romilly H and Isabella M.

These carols were then workshopped at RGS last Sunday. There were members of the

Godfrey Searle Choir and other professional singers, who had come along to sing the com-

positions. It was wonderful to hear what the children had written come alive and be per-

formed and for them to have an input into how it was to be performed.

In the evening everyone returned to hear a selection of the carols that the choir had cho-

sen to sing as an informal concert.

In the under 11 yrs category the following com-

posers received awards of certificates and print-

ed copies of their final carol.

Third place – Polly A

Second place – Henry F

First Place – Eleanor B

Most promising composer – Matthew O

Congratulations to all who took part and thanks to all at RGS who made such a lovely

event possible.

Lower School Burglar Bill

On Friday 25th November Preps and Lower School were treated to a wonderful perfor-

mance of ‘Burglar Bill’ by the Pied Piper Theatre Company. Each year their visit is eagerly

anticipated by pupils and staff and this year they did not disappoint! The story was already a

firm favourite with many members of staff and the children loved it too, especially when

Burglar Bill found a baby whilst out burgling. Of course Burglar Bill and Burglar Betty learnt

the error of their ways and there was a happy and moral ending. The song and dance rou-

tines were catchy and enjoyed by all.
